In most Western countries, it is compulsory for children to receive primary education (though in many jurisdictions it is permissible for parents to provide it). Primary education generally begins when children are four to seven years of age. The division between primary and secondary education is somewhat arbitrary, but it generally occurs at about twelve years of age (adolescence); some educational systems have separate middle schools for that period. Primary and secondary education together are sometimes (in particular, in Canada and the United States) referred to as "

Establishing the School Westtown's original building, completed in 1799, in a photograph taken in 1864. Westtown School first opened it doors to students in May, 1799. Twenty boys and twenty girls, most in their teens but some as young as eight years old, entered the school from Quaker families primarily in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area. The opening of Westtown School was the result of many years of decision-making, planning and fundraising by members of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The Philadelphia Quakers established the boarding school to have a setting where the moral development of their children could be attended to along with their schooling. Land for the school was purchased in Chester County, Pennsylvania, at that time a full day's stage ride from Philadelphia. The distant location was an intentional effort by the Philadelphia Quakers to keep their children away from the influences of the city. The property of six hundred acres provided other advantages for the fledgling school, including clay for making bricks for the new building. To further prepare for the opening, supplies were gathered, and teachers and a superintendent and matron were hired and charged with running the school in a family-like atmosphere. The group of forty students who arrived in 1799 were joined by an additional twenty or so each month until the size of the school reached one hundred boys and one hundred girls.

Dick, Jane, Puff and Spot: The Indian Boarding School Era
This presentation gives an overview of the boarding school era. General Richard Henry Pratt’s vision established the first boarding school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to assimilate American Indian students into mainstream culture. Dr. Tohe explains how boarding schools were later established across the country to continue Pratt’s vision. Her presentation also highlights selected early writings of students who wrote about their boarding school and missionary school experiences. Selected writers include Luther Standing Bear, Zitkala Sa, and oral narratives and works by contemporary American Indian writers. Some of these writers show how they accepted assimilation practices, devised ways to cope with boarding schools, or resisted assimilation altogether.

Below is a list of the boarding schools that have been present at the Town School Fair for the past several years. Generally, the number of schools in attendance corresponds to a varied cross section of students seeking a match to their own individual abilities, special talents, and athletic pursuits. Boarding schools across the United States, representing the East, Midwest, Western states and California have annually numbered between 90 to 100 participants. In addition, many Canadian schools and even some from Western Europe have presented at the fair. The large number of schools attending the Fair guarantees the presentation of a variety of curricula for all inquiring students. This list will be updated each September and will be sent with the invitations to Bay Area schools. The number of families visiting the Fair has consistently been in the 200+ range.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
If you feel you qualify for damages or remedies that might be awarded in this class action please fill out the form below.

Whitefield House
214 East Center St.
Nazareth, PA 18064
The handsome three and a half story limestone building that was planned and begun by George Whitefield in 1740, is today home to the Moravian Historical Society . Throughout the centuries the building has served the Moravian community in several capacities. It was the first place of worship in Nazareth. It served as a boarding school for Moravian girls, a nursery for the children of missionaries, and as the Moravian Theological Seminary. Until recently, missionaries on furlough or in retirement lived here. Today the Whitefield House provides outstanding educational opportunities for those interested in history, religion, art, and natural history. Many of the items on exhibit are one of a kind or extremely rare. Among these treasures are scenes from the nativity and passion of Christ, by John Valentine Haidt. Haidt lived in Bethlehem from 1754 to 1780, where he produced at least 29 religious canvases and 41 portraits. His classic works were used as visual aids in Moravian schools and among Indian settlements to preach the Gospel. The Museum houses a large collection of musical instruments , including one of the first violins made in America. One of the nation's first pipe organs (c. 1746) can be seen, and a variety of other mid-18th century instruments are displayed.

Choosing a college is very personal and very important. In fact, college counseling begins in the first year. Our College Counselor is available to all students and their families for advice and counsel regarding academic preparation, the search process, admission process, standardized tests and information on specific colleges. The real decision making takes place the last two years. Each junior meets individually with the College Counselor to exchange ideas and create a list of schools based on individual academic abilities, personal goals and aspirations. On vacation, these students visit colleges with their parents, refine their list and during the fall of senior year begin the application process. Our College Counselor will support you every step of the way and prepare the official report sent to colleges. The top 20% of our students have gone on to the following colleges over the last four years:
