Introduction
From the time that treaties were first made between Native People and European People, the subject of education was addressed. At some point, it became a policy to build boarding schools far away from the homes of the children who had to attend them. Some well-known boarding schools were Phoenix Indian School in Arizona, Ft. Lewis School in Colorado, Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, and Shawnee Mission School in Kansas. There were well over 50 boarding schools in America. What was life like for the children who were sent away to these kind of schools? In many cases, the children were taken from their families by force. The mission of some boarding school administrators was called assimilation . This meant that all the cultural teachings learned at home were taught to be wrong, and the so-called civilized teachings were to be learned instead. Often, if anyone was caught even speaking in their native tongue, they were severely punished, including being beaten.

Boarding School as Last Refuge

Governor Carlson's $12 million bonding proposal to fund boarding schools got another hearing at the capitol February 11. The schools would serve "at risk" juveniles who have had no major criminal problems. The proposal for Minnesota may be modeled after the Milton-Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. HOUSE SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH sparked debate over so-called residential education programs in 1994 when he suggested placing poor children in orphanages.

Giannina , September 2003 - Juni 2004, The Mercersburg Academy, Pennsylvania/USA , berichtet: 100 Tage, 100 Nächte Anfangs Schulbeginn Beim Essen Außerschulisch ...

About the Carlisle Indian Industrial School
Barbara Landis Note: I use the term "Indian" throughout this article to identify the peoples of the various autochthonous nations within the U.S. borders, who were affected by and recruited for the Indian School experiment, in keeping with the written accounts of the historic period during the school's existence.
PRATT, FT. MARION PRISONERS AND HAMPTON.
The story of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School begins with a brief introduction to its founder. Richard Henry Pratt spent eight years (1867-1875) in Indian Territory as an officer of the 10th Cavalry, commanding a unit of African-American "Buffalo Soldiers" and Indian Scouts. During this time, he was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK, 60 miles east of the site of the Battle of the Washita where Black Kettle (Cheyenne) was killed in 1867. Pratt came into contact with Kiowa, Cheyenne and Arapaho who had been placed on reservations in the area of the Red River near what is now the Texas and Oklahoma borders. He, his scouts and freed-slave soldiers, participated in the many campaigns to keep the Indians on the reservations and away from the encroaching settlers. But many of the Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors continued with their raiding parties in search of game and buffalo. Scant provisions and lack of supplies on the reservations made it impossible for the Indian people to thrive, forcing such raids. Constant complaints about inadequate government rations brought no relief. After filing numerous reports describing rancid beef, inferior and diseased livestock, poor grains and lack of provisions, Pratt developed a distrust and loathing of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) which endured throughout his military service. This deep hostility began while he was administering supplies on the reservations and eventually led to his resignation as the superintendent of the Carlisle Indian School in 1904.

Where Do We Go from Here?
Boarding School History Pratt was an Army Captain, not an educator. He had been put in charge of 72 Apache prisoners held at Ft. Marion near St. Augustine, Florida. The Army said that prisoners were suspected of having murdered white settlers, but never proved this claim. Captain Pratt started a prison school for the men in his charge. When the Ft. Marion prisoners were allowed to return home in 1878, he convinced 22 of them to continue their schooling. The Hampton Institute, a school for freed slaves in Virginia, accepted several of them. Carlisle’s opening allowed Pratt to resign his Army commission and to practice his ideas about educating Indians. Pratt’s goal was to "kill the Indian, not the man." In order to assimilate American Indian children into European culture, Pratt subjected them to what we would call brainwashing tactics today. These are the same methods that cult leaders use to coerce recruits to commit completely to a new way of thinking.
Boarding School Brainwashing Techniques
  • Many boarding schools were established far away from reservations so that students would have no contact with their families and friends. Parents were discouraged from visiting and, in most cases, students were not allowed to go home during the summer.

The Library of Congress Indian Boarding Schools: Civilizing the Native Spirit
Student Page Do you consider yourself civilized? What does it mean to be civilized? America was struggling with these questions as it tried to solve the "Indian problem." At the end of the nineteenth and early in the twentieth century, the American government supported American Indian boarding schools. Native American children were often removed from their families, placed in government-run boarding schools and trained in "white man's ways." One of the first to try this experiment was Captain R.H. Pratt. He founded the first off-reservation Indian boarding school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879. The Task The challenge is to imagine what life was like for people who lived during this period of time. Learn more about the teachers, school administrators, the children who attended the schools, and Native American leaders as you study photographs and life stories. Lesson 1 Discover the ways people who connected with American Indian boarding schools left clues that help us learn more about their lives.

http://www.sd4history.com/unit5/boardingschools.htm
Photo courtesy of South Dakota State Historical Society Boarding schools were set up across the country to teach Indian children how to live in a white world. To go to school, many children had to leave their families behind. They often went a long way from home to live at these schools. Spotted Tail’s children went to Pennsylvania. Soon each reservation would have one or more boarding schools. Some were run by the government. Others were run by missionaries. The children learned how to read and write English. They also learned how to bake bread, how to sew, and how to farm or run a printing press. They could not speak their own language. They had to become Christians. Many were not happy there. Flandreau Indian School was one of the largest boarding schools in South Dakota. The girls in the picture are learning how to cook there.
