ADOPT A PENGUIN
Welcome to the
International Penguin Conservation Web Site
Penguins are perfectly adapted to the environment in which they live, but they are less able to cope with alterations to the environment brought about by commercial fishing, oil pollution and coastal development. Penguins have undergone huge declines in certain regions, and some penguins face the very real prospect of extinction unless something is done to help. Click here to learn about the threats facing penguins In September 2000, penguin conservationists from all over the world gathered at La Serena to discuss ways in which penguins could be protected. A number of wide-ranging proposals were drafted, and the International Penguin Conservation Work Group was formed. Click here to learn more about the IPCWG Web Page by Mike Bingham

"Morally and Constitutionally Indefensible" is how the Supreme Court described the Falkland Islands Government's attempts to silence reports that Falklands penguins are starving to death through over-fishing. The Governor, Chief Executive, Attorney General and members of Executive Council were declared to have acted illegally and immorally in their attempts to silence a marine biologist calling for penguin protection. Attempts to silence Mike Bingham's research into penguin declines included false arrests, fabrication of evidence by the police, death threats, and an order by the Governor to deport Bingham on the grounds that he had criticised the government for not protecting penguins. The Supreme Court over-turned Governor Pierce's ruling, declaring it a gross breach of human rights for improper motives, and ordered the Falkland Islands Government to pay all Bingham's costs. Read more about the Falkland Islands Government's attempts to silence our work. Paramount Pictures visited the Falkland Islands in order to film a documentary about Mike Bingham and the Environmental Research Unit. Read about it here.

This is the smallest of the warm weather penguins. It stands only 16 to 18 inches (40 to 45 cm) tall and weighs only 5 pounds (2 to 2.5 kg). Galapagos penguins have a thin white band that runs under their chin. They have a black upside down horseshoe shape around their belly. The Galapagos may look like the Magellanic but it is smaller and the black markings on the belly are thinner. They are found on the Galapagos Islands and on Isabela Island just north of the Equator. They are the penguins that live the farthest north.
These penguins use burrows and two eggs are laid. They only mate and breed when there is plenty of food. Often only one chick is raised. Both parents tend the eggs for 38 to 40 days. Chicks are cared for by both male and female. The chick is guarded for about 30 days after hatching. The chicks molts, get their adult feathers, and are on their own in about 60 to 65 days.
One of the main problems for this penguin is keeping cool. Living close to the equator it gets over 100 degrees F (38 degrees Celsius) during the daytime. They keep cool by swimming and hunting for food in the cold water of the Cromwell Current during the day. During the cool nights they sleep and nest on the land. They hold their flippers out to help the heat escape their bodies. They protect their feet from getting sunburned by holding their flippers over their feet when on land.
Galapagos penguins eat mostly small fish such as mullet and sardines. They are dependent on the ocean currents to bring fish to their feeding grounds. Server weather from El Nino caused a severe shortage of food about 20 years ago. At that time over 70% of the Galapagos penguins died. Since then their numbers have increased but many scientist believe this species to be endangered. It is reported that there are about 800 breeding pairs left in the world.

Attack Of The Killer Penguins 2 New Version with raytraced penguin graphics! Use the mouse to aim and fire the gun. A target will appear round any hostile object whenever the crosshair is over it. Remember that if the object is moving quickly you will have to aim infront of it. Every 10 points increases the level and gives you an extra life - each level the penguins get faster and faster!!! Every 5th Level is a "Penguin Mothership" Level. The Mothership attempts to lay lots of "Evil Mutant Penguin Eggs" onto Earth, each one that lands will cost you a life. To help you on this level, you will notice a Force-field which appears above your gun. Any Eggs which strike the Force-field will be blown up, but that part of the Force-field will be destroyed. You can use your gun to blow up the Eggs as they fall - but to advance from this level you must shoot the Mothership several times to blow it up. Things still to do - get sound working correctly...
