To wear a mask and its associated vestment was to conceal one's own identity in the guise of another. Whether this other was a spirit, ancestor, or another person-either revered or feared-the ceremony in which the masked performer participated marked a time of transition, when otherworldly powers were invoked to aid in human affairs.

    CONGO FREE STATE
In 1876, as a result of an International Geographical Conference held in Brussels, at the initiative of Leopold II, King of the Belgians, (1835 - 1909 the Association Internationale Africaine charged with the "propagation of civilisation among the peoples of the Congo region by means of scientific exploration, legal trade and war against the "Arabic" slavetraders" was established. The actual work was entrusted to the different National Committees which were set up soon afterwards. Among these, the Belgian National Committee started its activities in 1877. At first these were limited to the eastern parts of later Congo, but soon it also started to show interest for the Lower Congo region. Taking advantage of these activities in the western parts, Leopold II set up, in 1878 an "international commercial, scientific and humanitarian committee", the Comité d'Études du Haut Congo - C.E.H.C.

Folk music arose, and best survives, in societies not yet affected by mass communication and the commercialization of culture. It normally was shared and performed by the entire community (not by a special class of expert performers), and was transmitted by word of mouth. During the 20th century, the term

    • Music of Afghanistan Since the 1980s, Afghanistan has been involved in near constant violence. As such, music has been suppressed and recording for outsiders minimal. During the 1990s, the Taliban government banned instrumental music and much public music-making. In spite of arrests and destruction of musical instruments, Afghan musicians have continued to ply their trade into the present. The capital of Kabul has long been the regional cultural capital, but outsiders have tended to focus on the city of Herat, which is more closely related to Iranian music. Lyrics across the country are typically in Persian or Pashto.
