2002 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System PedNSS is a nutrition surveillance system developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). PedNSS monitors the general health and nutritional status of low-income U.S. children up to the age of 18 years who participate in federally funded public health programs. The system is intended to characterize trends and patterns in key indicators of nutritional status. This information can be used for program planning and targeting. The indicators monitored by PedNSS include demographics, birth weight, weight, height/length, anemia and breastfeeding. Also included are TV watching and smoking in household (Ohio does not collect data on these indicators). The Ohio Department of Health has participated in the PedNSS system since 1995. Data currently being reported by Ohio to PedNSS are from the Ohio WIC Program. Thus, the Ohio PedNSS system currently includes information only for infants and children up to age 5 years. Information is in .PDF format. The free

Children with chronic illness or disability constitute almost a fourth of our total population of children. Of the 20 to 35 million children in the United States with chronic health conditions, 10 to 15 percent have problems severe enough to interfere with everyday activities and to require some daily assistance. In adults relatively few categories of chronic disease affect large numbers of people, whereas in children a large number of chronic conditions disable smaller numbers. Therefore, the nutritional

Klish, M.D., is Professor of Pediatrics, Head of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of the Nutrition and Gastroenterology Department at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. Dr. Klish has served as chair of the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Q: When my baby is ready for solids should I start with fruits or vegetables? How long should I feed her one before starting the other? A: Solids generally are started between 4 and 6 months of age. Cereals are the first solid to be started because they are usually iron-fortified, and babies need a little extra iron beginning at six months. After cereals are introduced, tradition dictates that the progession should be fruits, vegetables, meats, mixed dinners, and desserts. It's okay, however, to introduce foods in a different order because your baby is perfectly able to digest all solids at this age. It's best to give a new food every two or three days to be sure your baby can tolerate the food before trying another. Signs of food allergy include vomiting , skin rash, diarrhea, and wheezing.

Abstract #32345
Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance in an HMO setting
Emily Oken , Janet W. Rich-Edwards , Kelley S. Scanlon, PhD , and Matthew W. Gillman . (1) Harvard Medical School, , eoken@partners.org, (2) National Centers for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Highway, NE, Mailstop K25, Atlanta, GA 30341 Nutrition surveillance data are useful in planning, targeting, and evaluating nutrition programs and policies. Aggregation of these data provides an opportunity to monitor the nutritional status of the population served. We collected data retrospectively from electronic medical records of all children enrolled in Harvard Community Health Plan (now Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates), a staff model HMO in Massachusetts, from 1980 to 1998. In this period there were over 400,000 visits by over 100,000 children aged 0-59 months. The member population was predominantly non-poor, employed, and Caucasian. However, approximately 6% of subjects were on Medicaid, and nearly 20% were African American. Future use of this database may include monitoring breast feeding trends and nutritional status of older children. This project demonstrates that an HMO provides a feasible setting to gather ongoing nutrition surveillance data from a large, diverse population.
