Jyrki's Pascal page
Pascal programming is fun - that is, if you remember to avoid objects and other modernists' in(ter)ventions. I use Borland's Turbo Pascal (TP) myself. It comes with an easy development environment. Not to mention that our university site license makes it virtually free. There are thousands of library packages (called units) written in/for Turbo Pascal. For almost any conceivable purpose a Pascal-enthusiast somewhere in the world has written a unit ready to be used. Should you need something simple send your request to the newsgroup comp.lang.pascal.borland and your Pascal-friends will help you out. The netiquette does recommend that you first try to help yourself, e.g. check out a few WWW-sites near you. For me the most useful (and closest, whatever that means in the internet) are x2ftp.oulu.fi and garbo.uwasa.fi. The former has a lot of programming tips and documents in the directory /pub/msdos/programming . The latter has the so called SWAG, (a package containing a lot of nice demos) and of course Timo Salmi's Turbo Pascal FAQ. Units from other people are often handy, but sometimes not easy to use, so to make sure the procedures work the way you want - do it yourself. Motto - You can learn a lot by reinventing the wheel. Yes, you do learn more by doing it yourself, but that also takes a lot of time so try to find a balance that's most productive for you. I found it most annoying that TP wouldn't support the 256-color mode of the VGA card (also known as mode $13). Nor could I find functions to produce music with my new Soundblaster 16 card. After some tinkering and research in the above web-sites I did manage to write procedures that did something I could use. Included are some demo programs. Unfortunately the units (though included) are mostly in Finnish. (Think about the advantages of being bilingual: you never run out of descriptive identifiers, use one language for types another for vars etc.) Feel free to comment and/or ask questions by

The student is required to review the written materials, complete the self-assessment questions at the end of each section and successfully complete a multiple-choice test.
Following the review of the written materials the student is asked to design and develop a Pascal "payroll" program that produces the weekly wage for each employee in the workforce. For each employee, the shift and hours worked for each day are recorded and stored on a disk file. These values are then used to calculate the wage. The solution should be fully documented. Purpose
To ensure the student has reached satisfactory levels of achievement in the area of program design and development.

Programming Language Critiques: Pascal, C, C++, and C-Linda
    Jim Basney
    May 1995
The essential purpose of a programming language is to allow a programmer to give precise instructions to the computer. Programming languages do this with varying degrees of effectiveness. High-level programming languages have many benefits: they provide for portability; they abstract away machine details to simplify the task of programming; and some of them use type systems to provide program-correctness checking. New programming languages are being developed each year, and one would hope that they are getting better at filling the needs of programmers. This process can not proceed without a dialogue of criticism on current programming languages and what programmers would like to see in new languages. In this paper I will survey some criticisms of the Pascal, C, and C++ languages, and also I will put forward some of my own criticisms of the C-Linda programming language. Additionally, there are significant problems with control-flow and source code organization. There is "no guaranteed order of evaluation of the logical operators and and or" (Kernighan 7). This disallows tests like "while (i Additionally, there is criticism of the way C++ implements object-oriented programming. One of my main complaints with C++, which Joyner also makes in his paper, is the fact that private class members must be included in the header file that is exported to the user of the class. This seems to go against the object-oriented paradigm, where the user of the class should not know how the class is implemented, but is only told how to use the interface to that class. There is also no way to declare a method for a class which can not be overridden by a child class. Lastly, virtual function declarations in classes are unnecessary bookkeeping that could be done by the compiler.

    (revised 2000-05-03)
    (Spanish version)
    0. Introduction This paper is concerned with how to write quality Pascal code. The emphasis is on the coding aspects of writing Pascal code. Sample program: roman.p.txt , a program to convert Roman numerals into arabic numbers. Sample bad code: trim , an actual real-world piece of bad code. Note: the paper uses Pascal/iX, the Pascal on the HP 3000 computer, but nearly all points apply to any variant of Pascal, and most apply to other programming languages as well. I want the discussions in this paper to cover the four P's of programming: philosophy, performance, problems, and portability. I considered trying to divide the paper into four chapters, one for each of the P's, but realized that for many topics that I would put in one chapter, equally good arguments could be raised for putting it into another one. So, instead of having one chapter per P, I've organized the paper into the chapters: Style, Coding Choices, Performance Problems, and Portability. In each chapter, the 4 P's are used as the principles underlying a set of guidelines. These suggested rules should not be viewed as though they were the 10 (or %12 or $A) Commandments. They are my rules, the ones that I have used (in various forms for different languages) in the writing of over one million lines of code. Guidelines should grow, as do people. I can look at programs I wrote in 1970 and see changes in style in the intervening years. Despite the changes, the overall look has remained the same.

Why Pascal is Not My Favorite Programming Language
    Brian W. Kernighan , April 2, 1981
    Murray Hill, New Jersey 07974
    Abstract
It has also strongly influenced languages developed subsequently, in particular Ada. Pascal was originally intended primarily as a teaching language, but it has been more and more often recommended as a language for serious programming as well, for example, for system programming tasks and even operating systems. This paper discusses my personal discovery of some of the reasons why.
    Genesis
This paper has its origins in two events - a spate of papers that compare C and Pascal( ) and a personal attempt to rewrite 'Software Tools'( ) in Pascal. Since Ratfor is really Fortran in disguise, it has few of the assets that Pascal brings - data types more suited to character processing, data structuring capabilities for better defining the organization of one's data, and strong typing to enforce telling the truth about the data. It is not a comparison of Pascal with C or Ratfor.

    1. Introduction
Component Pascal is a general-purpose language in the tradition of Pascal, Modula-2 and Oberon. Its most important features are block structure, modularity, separate compilation, static typing with strong type checking (also across module boundaries), type extension with methods, dynamic loading of modules, and garbage collection. Type extension makes Component Pascal an object-oriented language. An object is a variable of an abstract data type consisting of private data (its state) and procedures that operate on this data. Abstract data types are declared as extensible records. Component Pascal covers most terms of object-oriented languages by the established vocabulary of imperative languages in order to minimize the number of notions for similar concepts. Complete type safety and the requirement of a dynamic object model make Component Pascal a component-oriented language.
