Excellent book about the frontiers of ornithology Anyone who thinks all the vertebrates of this world have been discovered and described should think again. This book chronicles the work of ornithologists in the mountains and jungles of Peru and elsewhere in South America as they hunt for new and often exotic bird species. Focusing mainly on the work of LSU ornithologists and in particular the accomplished John O'Neill, it provides a first hand view of such expeditions, describes many of the new birds species found, shows how ornithologists work (it's not just bird-watching either), and provides interesting discussions on issues relating to taxonomy, scientific credibility, collecting specimens, conservation, neotropical ecology, evolution, and even South American politics. I highly recommend it. Recounts the details of birding expeditions in Peru The visceral details of collecting specimens oftropical birds and the gruelling politics of bringingsuch an expedition to Peru make for intense reading. An avid birder, Stap managed to hook up with LSU ornithologists John O'Neill and the late Ted Parker. Through the dense canopy he followed the crew and documented their trials and triumphs. Most notably a new species of parrot was found.

A Parrots Foot Preference May Help Determine Its Talking Ability
by Beth Shery Sisk, Real Macaw Parrot Club member
As French neurologist, Paul Pierre Broca discovered in 1864, the function of speech is handled by the left side of the brain. But, unlike righties, some left-handers use parts of the right side of their brain for processing language. Dr. Peter Snyder, a neuroscientist at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, was intrigued by whether this is strictly a human phenomenon or whether animal brains function the same way. So, he began to look for the right animal model. At the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, Dr. Snyder found the perfect candidates: parrots. Right-footed African Grey parrots, he determined, know more words than left-footed birds.
For 300 years, people have noted the parrots dexterity and tendency to favor one foot over the other when handling food. But all of the scientific attempts to quantify this behavior were deeply flawed, Snyder said. He began by developing the largest and most accurate study to date of parrot footedness, using more than 500 birds, enlisting the publics help. He created questionnaires describing a set of experiments and strict guidelines for carrying them out, and published them in bird magazines and on the Internet. From the responses, Dr. Snyder concluded that parrots in general show a tendency toward left footedness. Among one species, the Australasian Cockatoo, 82% of the birds are left-footedclose to the percentage of humans who are right-handed. That degree of preference is unknown in any other vertebrate animal, including primates.

Generalities
I n general, here are few absolutes in parrot behavior. In dealing with an animal that is probably smarter than the person living next to your neighbor (think about that for a second), generalities will not apply almost as often as they apply. That having been said, let us recognize the generalities that will follow for what they are: the result of experience and a decent place to start figuring out the requirements of your particular companion animal. There are three kinds of contact that need to be combined to fulfill your bird's social needs: direct, indirect and ambient.
Direct Attention
D irect attention is just you and the bird. Irrespective of your bird's handlability/tameness, if the bird is bonded to you then it needs your direct attention. This can mean anything from cuddling your bird under your shirt to just standing near the cage. But it must be just the two of you, with lots of communicating and eye contact. This means no reading, watching television or talking on the phone at the same time. This should be a special time between you and Tweetie. It is a time to reinforce your bond and to make your bird feel safe and secure. It should be a time that he can rely upon. W ith my Moluccan, I have two specific times for direct attention...I picked one and he picked the other. He chose mornings. In his own subtle way, as only a Moluccan can, he let me know that he preferred that his day begin with

The Media Parrots in the News Room "There is no such thing as a free press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who would dare to write his honest opinion. The business of the journalist is to destroy truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell himself, his country, and his race, for his daily bread. We are tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping jacks; they pull our strings, we dance; our talents, our possibilities, and our lives are the property of these men. We are intellectual prostitutes." - Journalist John Swinton, of the New York Times , to his staff at his retirement dinner. Sightings from The Catbird Seat ~ o ~ From ... and the truth shall set you free , by David Icke: Psychological Facism The underlying theme of all you have read is the manipulation of the human mind. You cannot control billions of people with tanks in the streets and soldiers at the door. You can only do it by divide and rule - and by programming the mass consciousness (public opinion) into believing that what you want to do is a good idea or the only option. This is crucial to both understanding how the manipulation works and to thinking on a more streetwise vibration which will make it far more difficult for us to be misled. . . .

THE SIXTH CHAPTER - GENERAL POLYNESIA
BUT alas! even the Three, mighty though they were, could not last forever against an army which seemed to have no end. In one of the hottest scrimmages, when the enemy had broken a particularly wide hole through the fence, I saw Long Arrow's great figure topple and come down with a spear sticking in his broad chest.
For another half-hour Bumpo and the Doctor fought on side by side. How their strength held out so long I cannot tell, for never a second were they given to get their breath or rest their arms.
The Doctor - the quiet, kindly, peaceable, little Doctor! - well, you wouldn't have known him if you had seen him that day dealing out whacks you could hear a mile off, walloping and swatting in all directions.
As for Bumpo, with staring eye-balls and grim set teeth, he was a veritable demon. None dared come within yards of that wicked, wide-circling door-post. But a stone, skilfully thrown, struck him at last in the centre of the forehead. And down went the second of the Three. John Dolittle, the last of the Terribles, was left fighting alone.
Jip and I rushed to his side and tried to take the places of the fallen ones. But, far too light and too small, we made but a poor exchange. Another length of the fence crashed down, and through the widened gap the Bag-jagderags poured in on us like a flood.

Dr D's diets are complete with all nutrients, including vitamins and elements (both macro- and micro minerals). The diets contain amounts of the nutrients to allow for stress situations. None of the competitive cage bird diets surpass Dr D's for its nutritional benefits. Our nutritionists formulate diets based on new proven concepts that bring the nutrients together according to energy ratios instead of percentages. This assures that the nutrients are balanced against one another so that one nutrients will not interfere with utilization of another. A typical example is the accumulation of excess fat in the bird's organs when diets are not properly balanced. That can result in kidney and heart problems. 2. Dr D's diets are formulated for different species of birds and to allow for the nutrient requirements at different stages of growth and development. One diet for all birds is a myth. Growing birds have different nutrient requirements than mature birds, or those that are laying eggs. 4. Remember that Dr D's diets are balance throughout, each mouthful of feed is the same all the way through even though the birds grind the pellets into fines (see item #11).

General Jokes (November 2000) (1) In a small country pub, all the patrons became quite used to the pub owner's little dog being around the bar, so were quite upset when one day the little dog died. Everyone met to decide how they could remember the little dog. The decision was to cut off his tail and stick it up behind the bar to remind everyone of the little dog's wagging tail.
The little dog went up to heaven and was about to run through the pearly gates when he was stopped by Saint Peter, who questioned the little dog as to where he was going. The little dog said, "I have been a good dog so I am going into heaven where I belong!" Saint Peter replied, "Heaven is a place of perfection. You cannot come into heaven without a tail. Where is your tail?" The little dog explained what had happened back on earth. St. Peter told the little dog to go back down to earth and retrieve his tail. The little dog protested that it was now the middle of the night on earth, but St. Peter would not change his mind.

About Us Love for parrots inspires professor to pen manuscript By Coreen Bailor Published: 10/26/2001 Media Credit: Mike Gessman/Staff Photographer Joanna Burger, seen in her office last week, wrote the book “The Parrot Who Owns Me: The Story of a Relationship.” [Click to enlarge] Having grown up on a farm, Joaana Burger developed a love for animals — parrots in particular — which eventually evolved into a career. "To keep interested, I watched birds and snakes growing up," said Burger, now a member of the department of ecology, evolution and natural resources at Cook College. Burger is hoping to enlighten a general, non-academic audience to the world of parrots with her book "The Parrot Who Owns Me: The Story of a Relationship," published in the spring. The book details the bond she has formed with her 12-inch Amazon, Tiko. Earning her bachelor's degree in biology and animal behavior from the State University of New York at Albany; her master's from Cornell University; and her doctorate from the University of Minnesota, Burger has taught for almost 30 years. She has spent the past 15 as a professor of cell biology and neuroscience at the University.

To achieve the first short-term goal, I am constructing an ethogram using videotapes of African Grey Parrot behavior; the ethogram will allow me to judge the feasibility of its use for long-term study in three ways. First, I will identify the amount and types of behavioral data that were collected. Second, I will create definitions of and guidelines for assigning behavioral elements that will provide the ethogram's underlying structure. Third, when the underlying structure is complete, I will test the ethogram's utility and inter-observer reliability. Achieving the second short-term goal will require some understanding of the natural history of African Grey Parrots. Knowledge of daily activities (e.g., where and when the parrots forage for food) and possible effects of human presence on African Grey Parrot behavior are important for the design and implementation of conservation practices. During my study, I collected some of this information in the form of written field notes and videotape; further anaylsis for the ethogram will provide even more information.

I forget, but the point is that not only were perceptions of social stereotypes and groups changing, these changes can only rarely be characterized as "elite" or "popular." With a change of clothes, this particular "noble" peasant could well have passed as a brother of Louis XV. Bob Isherwood, in Farces and Fantasies cadre in the SNCF! Cadre here resembles fonctionnaire , a break-point between hierarchies. Louise Robbins' beautiful, indeed wonderful book, Elephant Slaves and Pampered Parrots; Exotic Animals in Eighteenth-Century Paris after his guards had assassinated Concini; he did not wish to have them in prison now that he himself was free. Dr. Robbins' study of attitudes toward elephants brings together all the themes in the book. Thought to be the most intelligent of animals, and also the most "human," the well-trained elephant is part of the "downstairs" of Western elite culture. A slave servant who likes to please, a hard worker and companion, the elephant is perceived in incredibly stereotypical terms. There seems to have been little attention to differences (African versus Indian, for example), or close observation of their actual behavior. The engraving showing them copulating in what is sometimes called the "missionary position" is a remarkable example of some artist's view of what it is to be a human, projected on elephants. While the greater possibility of ferocity in the males was noted, there seemed no reason not to consider them as royal subjects (p. 98).

Executive Summary
Parrots: Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan

Chapters 3 through 7 concern the threatened parrots of the world. For convenience, the world is split into four regions: Each regional account outlines broad issues that affect the parrots of the region and then discusses potential conservation solutions. In the first three regions, there are also outlines of specific projects that address the most threatened species and some other regional priorities. For the Neotropical region, the majority of priority projects are included in the "actions" section of each species account. The regional accounts are followed by individual species accounts for all threatened species. They include information on current status, distribution, threats and actions necessary to ensure continued survival. General recommendations and conclusions include: This plan is designed to aid managers and researchers entrusted with the conservation of parrot species to understand both how best to evaluate the threats faced by individual species and how best to design appropriate conservation strategies to counter the threats involved. It is intended as much to be an evaluation of conservation techniques as to be a set of specific recommendations for individual species.

Kaka Thriving in safety zone
NZ Herald- May 2000 Blenhiem - Ideal breeding conditions at the Rotoiti Nature Recovery project have resulted in a bumper crop of new kaka chicks this year.
The threatened species has benefited from intensive predator control on the 825 hectare "mainland island" alongside Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park, which has kept the numbers of stoats, rats, possums and wasps at bay.
Three nests inside the protected area this year produced nine young, of which six have survived, said Dr Ron Moorhouse, Department of Conservation coordinator of the South Island kaka research unit.
Two of the three females are attempting to raise a second brood of chicks, which has not previously been recorded in kaka, he said.
