The males are varying shades of green depending upon their subspecies, and have brilliant red splashes of color on their wing bends and sides. From the age of about one year, they have a striking candy corn beak. The females are varying shades of red, blue, lavender, and purple. The females of the Vosmaeri subspecies have an additional daisy yellow color on the tail. All adult females have jet black beaks. Because of the pronunciation of the word eclectic , many people pronounce the name of the Eclectus parrot "e-cleck-tus." Photos below show an eclectus female (left) and male (right).

Of Wild Birds and Pets Sitting before a computer monitor can have its advantages over birding in the field. Admittedly not too many but it does allow you to "meet" people, especially fellow birders, from around the world. It is how I recently "met" Antonie Meiring of the " Farmall Parrot Trust " in South Africa. And therein lies another tale of cyberspace investigative research but I won’t go into that at this point. In essence I asked Antonie for information to help plan my forthcoming trip to the Kruger National Park and in return he asked me to help him out with his flying, and all too brief, trip to Australia later in April. Part of his request involved needing an introduction to Australian aviculturists specialising in parrots. That was a tough nut to crack. I didn’t know any. Birders and people who keep pet budgies in cages tend not to be on similar social circles. In my own case this has not be a deliberate policy. For my sins I even know people who own cats and often find them more knowledgeable, less pontificacious that an awful lot of birders I run into through the course of a day. Fate played its hand via the birding-aus mailing list. A thread appeared discussing which species of birds could be legally "caged’ by the average punter. I tossed in a penny’s worth to which Mike Owen of Mooloolaba replied. To my delight his "signature" contained the appellation

Parrots and Nutrition
Although it is difficult to consider all the nutritional needs of all the different species of parrots, the same basic principles of diet management apply to almost all parrots and parakeets. In a nutshell (no pun intended!) seeds are not enough (and alone are actually a very unsound diet)! Formulated diets are good, but even these need to be supplemented with a variety of fresh foods. Lories and lorikeets are the mosts striking exception to the general rules, and their needs are covered here along with general principles to apply to your parrot's eating habits, and what foods to avoid.

http://www.bluequaker.com/Art-028.htm
OUR PARROTS ARE NOT "BIRD BRAINS" by Linda Greeson I have for years followed with interest reports on Irene Pepperberg's research on the intelligence of parrots. A recent article in our local newspaper reporting on some of her work was titled "More Than Mimicry ?". What surprised me, and left me more than a little indignant was the use of the question mark with the title. I am sure that the author of the article does not own a pet bird! If Ms Pepperberg's extensive and scientifically conducted experiments are not sufficient evidence that parrot vocalizations are meaningful, every pet bird owner has a collection of stories to support the conviction that birds think meaningful thoughts. Because we are so busy with the care of breeding pairs and their babies our pet birds receive little or no formal training. We talk to them while giving them daily care and they are within sight and hearing of our family activities. They undoubtedly mimic the words they hear from us. It is their appropriate use of words and phrases that is so impressive. Willie, our African Gray, is our most outstanding example of intelligent use of speech. When one of the family goes toward the outside door accompanied by our dog Foxy he invariably asks "Do you want to go for a walk?". When we accompany guests to the same door as they are leaving his remark is "Well, see you all later.". He never says "Hello" unless the phone rings. When my Mother enters the house and I am not in the immediate area he calls out "Linda! Linda!" in a loud voice. When I am within his sight, he greets Mother with a polite "How are you?".

http://www.cockatiels.org/articles/care/gencare.html
Salem, Virginia " Devoted to the care of birds, reptiles, and exotic mammals"
ENVIRONMENT
Birds have very efficient respiratory systems and can be harmed by cigarette smoke, insecticides, hairspray, and other air pollutants. Overheated non-stick cookware (like Teflon) makes a poisonous gas and can kill a bird quickly. Be extremely careful, or do not use it at all. Temperatures comfortable for you should be comfortable for healthy birds. Sudden changes in temperature can be harmful for sick birds. In winter with dry heat, increase the humidity with a humidifier. Household dangers include dogs, cats, toxic plants, ceiling fans, and young children.
GENERAL CARE
Amazon parrots and others that are from humid areas need frequent bathing, but bathing is good for all pet birds. Use only plain water for bathing; do not use additives because these may irritate the skin and feathers. Some birds prefer spray bottles, showering with their owners, a bowl of water, or rolling in wet greens. Some resist bathing and need a gradual introduction. Your bird may need periodic grooming, such as wing clips to keep it from flying. This protects birds from escaping or hurting themselves, or a mischievous one from doing much harm. You may need to trim the nails periodically to dull the ends, but beaks usually never need trimming. If beaks or nails constantly grow long this may indicate health problems.
