History
Back in 1954, the plight of the runaway was given nationwide publicity by a series of Parade Magazine articles entitled “Nobody’s Children.” As a sequel to the series and their own recognition that action was required, various organizations sought to develop remedial legislation. Efforts were directed toward formulating an interstate agreement to cover multi-state problems involving juveniles. Identified needs included procedures to permit the return of runaways, absconders and escapees who were found in other states, and also for a system under which juvenile offenders could be supervised in other states. The Interstate Compact on Juveniles and the Association of Juvenile Compact Administrators are the ultimate results of these efforts. WHAT DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DO ON PAROLE OR PROBATION?
Ordinarily, you are under the supervision of a parole or probation officer and are required to report to them on a pre-determined schedule. How often is usually based on the type of crime committed, prior criminal record, your risk to the community, and other factors. Offenders who are at the highest level of risk (e.g., likely to break supervision) may be required to report weekly while those at a lower risk may report monthly or quarterly. It is also possible that, sometime after the initial supervision period, the parole officer may change the level of contact with the offender to reflect the particular circumstances of the individual case.
The parole or probation officer will usually inquire of the offender that they are complying with the restrictions, terms, and conditions set by the paroling authority. The offender may have to show proof that they are working and doing assigned community service. They may also be required to submit to periodic blood tests.

http://www.dvc.edu/career/Career Sheets/ParoleProbationOfficers.htm
Parole and Probation Officers What do Parole and Probation Officers do? Parole and Probation Officers help legal offenders readjust to society. They provide support and guidance to help people identify and solve their problems. Parole officers work with people who have been released from a correctional institution and placed on parole. Probation officers work with juveniles and adults released by a court without sentence or imprisonment and put on probation by a court of law; sometimes times in conjunction with incarceration or confinement to juvenile hall. Some of their time is devoted to supervision and counseling after the offenders have been returned to the community. They perform pre-sentencing investigations, investigate home conditions of clients, keep accurate records, write reports of their findings to give court testimony, and to enforce the order of the court.
Salary and Employment Outlook:
California Occupational Guides Occupational Outlook Handbook America's Career Info Net Typical Employers: More than half the parole and probation officers work for the State of California. Others work in local or federal government positions. They are employed by the State Department of Corrections, California youth authority, work release centers and juvenile counseling centers.
