Parks and Recreation T he City of Edmond, Oklahoma maintains one of the finest park systems in the state. The Park and Recreation Board coordinates activities in the parks ranging from a Halloween Festival to concerts in the parks. For a list and description of Edmond parks and recreational facilities, see the Guide below. Many cities are judged by the activities of its youth. Edmond is fortunate in having outstanding recreational facilities and excellent programs for young people A special attraction in Edmond is one of the finest golf courses in America: Oak Tree Golf Club hosted the US Amateur in 1984 and the P.G.A. in 1988. Kickingbird Golf and Tennis Club was the host for the 1995 NCAA Collegiate Tennis Championship and Golf Championship. Edmond is horse country. Driving around the area, one might be amazed at the number of horse ranches and picturesque pastures in the Edmond area. No one breed dominates in the area, but you can find Arabians, Morgans, Appaloosas, quarterhorses, thoroughbreds, jumpers and even miniatures. All are top quality stock recognized worldwide. With the opening of Remington Park just south of Edmond and the Lazy E Arena north of Edmond, the horse industry should continue to be a major industry in our area. The following parks and recreational facilities are part of what makes Edmond Living a great experience!

DeLeon Springs State Park This idyllic spot, 603 acres in all, has been occupied periodically since 8,000 B.C. John J. Audubon visited Colonel Orlando Rees here at Spring Garden Plantation in 1832. Audubon wrote that the sight of the spring afforded him pleasure sufficient to counterbalance the tediousness of his daylong journey in a carriage drawn by Indian horses from the Bulow plantation. There is excellent swimming in the spring, 72 degrees year-round. Swimming is not allowed in the spring run but anglers will find bass and bream in abundance. A Florida freshwater fishing license is required for persons 16 years of age or older. DeLeon Springs provides access to Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, where canoeists may explore 21,500 acres of lakes, creeks and marshes. Maps are available at the park concession, as are canoe and paddleboat rentals and snacks. Scuba diving is limited to open-water instructors and six students. A certification check and Instructor Permit are required. Near remains of an abandoned sugar mill, at the Old Spanish Sugar Mill and Griddle House, visitors may enjoy the speciality grill-your-own pancakes made from grain stone-ground on site with French buhr millstones. A half-mile nature trail meanders through floodplain forest, where a variety of plant and animal life awaits. The trail is extended by Wild Persimmon Trail, built by Florida Trail Association. Picnickers can gather under the live oak trees that grow around the spring.

    120. Motorized Abuse Of National Parks
America’s national parks, unlike many recreational sites, still offer the opportunity to see the landscape as it was 100, or even 1,000, years ago.
    http://www.npca.org/across_the_nation/visitor_experience/motorized_abuse/default
HOME >> Across the Nation >> Visitor Experience >> Motorized Abuse ... Off-Road Vehicles
Should Recreational Vehicles Be Allowed in the Parks? F rom Yellowstone to Denali, Big Cypress to Pictured Rocks, our national parks are under siege. E very year jet skis , dirt bikes, snowmobiles , swamp buggies, and other off-road vehicles inflict incredible damage to park ecosystems.
    • Jet skis can dump 2 to 3 gallons of oil and gasoline into the water every hour. Snowmobiles can emit 100 times as much carbon monoxide and 300 times as many hydrocarbons as automobiles. Off-road vehicles destroy vegetation and cause erosion. Snowmobiles and jet skis can be heard from distances as far as 20 miles.
One park resource damaged by all off-road motorized recreation is natural quiet.
America’s national parks, unlike many recreational sites, still offer the opportunity to see the landscape as it was 100, or even 1,000, years ago. But few places—parks included—still offer undisturbed soundscapes, the natural sounds of the land.
Unless we can safeguard the parks from the roaring engines of off-road vehicles and low-flying aircraft, America will lose another connection to the rhythms of the land, and the national parks will be further diminished as special places.
