General Information
For more than 80 years, the Missouri state park system has preserved and made available to the people of Missouri the best of our state's natural and cultural resources. The mission of the Missouri state park system is to preserve and interpret the state's most outstanding natural landscapes and cultural landmarks, and to provide outdoor recreational opportunities. The History of Missouri's State Park System Missouri State Park Advisory Board Missourians Improving Their State Parks Economic Impact Report Preserving Missouri's Natural Landscapes
A vital component of the state park mission is to preserve the finest representatives of Missouri's natural landscapes. These diverse landscapes blend together to create unique and varied settings for Missouri's state parks. From the ancient geological wonders of our caves to the new wildflowers that appear each year as a result of our prairie restoration efforts; from the old-growth oaks of the Mississippi lowlands to lofty pine forests; from the ancient domes and dissected hills of the Ozark highland to freely meandering streams - Missouri state parks preserve the considerable array of landscapes that piece together our distinctive state. Preserving Missouri's Cultural Landmarks
Missouri's colorful past is preserved and interpreted on the historic battlefields where family and friends fought against each other in a war that split the state; in the very rooms where buckskinned statesmen held heated arguments that resulted in Missouri's statehood; and in the homes of Missouri's native sons who went on to become major figures on the world stage. Indian villages interpret life before our state was formed, while villages settled by German and French immigrants denote a time of transition. Nostalgic landmarks, such as mills and covered bridges, take us on a journey back to simpler times. A visit to a state historic site is one way to celebrate and understand Missouri's interesting past and the colorful men and women who shaped our history.

However, there developed a gradual realization that without rigorous preservation of the natural ecology, not only was management of a national park meaningless, but users would soon become dissatisfied. The acknowledgment propelled the authorities administering the park to place priority on conserving the natural ecology. They realized that users would become more attracted to a park that best preserved nature.

The Sequoia and general Grant National parks, chapter 9 of Our National parks by John Muir (1901). Chapter IX The Sequoia and general Grant National parks.

Chapter IX
The Sequoia and General Grant National Parks
The Big Tree ( Sequoia gigantea ) is Nature's forest masterpiece, and, so far as I know, the greatest of living things. It belongs to an ancient stock, as its remains in old rocks show, and has a strange air of other days about it, a thoroughbred look inherited from the long ago-the auld lang syne of trees. Once the genus was common, and with many species flourished in the now desolate Arctic regions, in the interior of North America, and in Europe, but in long, eventful wanderings from climate to climate only two species have survived the hardships they had to encounter, the gigantea and sempervirens, the former now restricted to the western slopes of the Sierra, the other to the Coast Mountains, and both to California, excepting a few groves of Redwood which extend into Oregon. The Pacific Coast in general is the paradise of conifers. Here nearly all of them are giants, and display a beauty and magnificence unknown elsewhere. The climate is mild, the ground never freezes, and moisture and sunshine abound all the year. Nevertheless it is not easy to account for the colossal size of the Sequoias. The largest are about three hundred feet high and thirty feet in diameter. Who of all the dwellers of the plains and prairies and fertile home forests of round-headed oak and maple, hickory and elm, ever dreamed that earth could bear such growths, trees that the familiar pines and firs seem to know nothing about, lonely, silent, serene, with a physiognomy almost godlike; and so old, thousands of them still living had already counted their years by tens of centuries when Columbus set sail from Spain and were in the vigor of youth or middle age when the star led the Chaldean sages to the infant Saviour's cradle! As far as man is concerned they are the same yesterday, to-day, and forever, emblems of permanence.

Composed of 2,000 parkland acres and 15 parkway miles, these green oases define our city's form and character. They preserve our rich native landscape, and strengthen neighborhood ties. For thousands of daily visitors, our parks are havens for relaxing, having fun and reducing the stress of busy lives. The great master landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, and his firm designed these 18 parks and six parkways over a 50 year period - from 1891 to 1940. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, our system of parks and parkways is one of only five Olmsted systems in existence - adding immeasurable value to the excellent quality of life enjoyed by the citizens of our community. Since the early 1980's, our community has mobilized to restore and preserve our parks legacy. In 1989, the Louisville Olmsted Parks Conservancy, Inc. was created to help the City of Louisville preserve and enhance these masterpieces for all generations to come. We invite you to learn more about the Olmsted Parks, the work of the Conservancy, and how you, too, can be a part of this growing movement to preserve and restore the legacy of these great parks.

General Rules At Campgrounds "If you follow the rule of not destroying the park and not bothering
your neighbour then you will probably be following the rules of all campgrounds" T he following is a general guideline of the do's and don'ts to be aware of when staying in campgrounds and trailer parks. Each park will have their own specific rules which may or may not include some or all of these. Be sure to check when you sign in or when you make your reservation. Reservations - Making reservations ahead of time only makes sense. You can avoid a lot of disappointment, not to mention those late-night searches for a motel, if you call ahead to confirm that there is space for you. Arrival Time - Some parks can't admit you after a certain hour. If you find you're going to be late, give them a call and find out what their procedure is. They may have a "late arrivals" area where you can spend the night or possibly another option. Quiet Hours - Most parks will have noise restrictions throughout the night. These can include, loud talking, boisterous behaviour, musical instruments, radios, t.v.'s or even car engines. Guests - Many parks have rules and sometimes extra charges regarding the number of guests, guests' cars and the hours guests are allowed in the park. You are responsible for your guests while they are visiting.
