Every year since then, the town of Sanger, 45 miles west of Kings Canyon, has sponsored, in cooperation with the NPS, a special Yuletide celebration in Grant Grove. The event is held the second Sunday in December. Beneath the tree's snow-laden branches, the high school choir sings carols, NPS rangers place a wreath, and high school students present the colors. About Trees
Insects
Gypsy Moths
The year 2000 marked the first time that gypsy moths were found in any Janesville Parks. Gypsy moths were imported from Europe in 1869. Unfortunately, a few escaped and what resulted was defoliation and devastation of trees and forests from the East Coast moving west. The moths entered Wisconsin in 1971. Today many eastern Wisconsin communities are seeing sharp increases in the gypsy moth populations. If left unchecked gypsy moths grow in numbers and defoliate many trees, however, they prefer oak. Obviously, trees in your yard are just as susceptible as park trees. Last year a large population of gypsy moths was detected, trapped, and treated in Lustig Park. In 2001, a population was detected in the Racine St. and Palmer Dr. area. This year a B.t.k. bacterium that is selective for, but not restricted to, the gypsy moth may be proposed for aerial application to control the highest population areas. We are alert to the concern of gypsy moths in our park system and we want to protect the beautiful trees we now enjoy. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection manages the aerial spray program. Information about the program is available by calling 1-800-642-MOTH or visit their page at the Department of Natural Resources web site as follows: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/forestry/fh/insects/gmguide.htm

Ducks Geese Notice. In recent years, City waterfront parks in Janesvillehave experienced a duck and goose population explosion.

Home Government Public Works Leisure ... Top Hits
In recent years, City waterfront parks in Janesville have experienced a duck and goose population explosion. Today, parks such as Traxler, Monterey, and Riverside are suffering from concentrated waterfowl excrement and deteriorating lawn areas. Public concern over sanitation has been expressed. We feel the best approach to this concern is to recommend that you do not feed these waterfowl. We believe that by not feeding the ducks and geese, these birds will successfully return to feeding on their natural diet in and along the waters of our park system and the unhealthy concentration will diminish to natural numbers. Do all of the ducks and geese a favor...observe and enjoy...but please refrain from feeding them. Thanks, The Janesville Park Department.
More About the Situation
How many geese do we want in Janesville parks , and how do we maintain that number? Some park areas have a high population of geese - and their droppings make it unpleasant to set down a picnic blanket or walk barefoot in the grass. The local giant Canada geese population skyrocketed in the 1990s statewide in urban areas, although numbers are somewhat down here this year. In Janesville, populations are concentrated in Traxler, Monterey, Kiwanis and Riverside parks and the Lions Beach area. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource (DNR) and the Parks Department are cooperating to understand the nature of the geese and of the population problem. Ducks are not as much of a problem because duck droppings are much smaller than the cigar-sized geese droppings, which also do not dissipate as quickly. DNR wildlife specialists visited parks on June 27, 2001 to round geese up and band them with age and sex tags. Tagging helps specialists collect information about migration and geese mortality rates, such as whether some are hunted where they went during last winter's heavy snow.
