  • Introduction
Parkinson's disease may be one of the most baffling and complex of the neurological disorders. Its cause remains a mystery but research in this area is active, with new and intriguing findings constantly being reported. Parkinson's disease was first described in 1817 by James Parkinson, a British physician who published a paper on what he called "the shaking palsy." In this paper, he set forth the major symptoms of the disease that would later bear his name. For the next century and a half, scientists pursued the causes and treatment of the disease. They defined its range of symptoms, distribution among the population, and prospects for cure. In the early 1960s, researchers identified a fundamental brain defect that is a hallmark of the disease: the loss of brain cells that produce a chemical —

Credits Parkinson's Disease Treatment Overview No known treatment can halt or reverse the breakdown of nerve cells that causes Parkinson's disease . However, medication can relieve many symptoms of the disease. Surgery also can be effective in a small number of people to treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Treatment is different for every person, and your treatment needs may change as the disease progresses. Age, work status, family, and living situation can all affect decisions about when to begin treatment, what types of treatment to use, and when to make changes in treatment. As your medical condition changes, regular adjustments in treatment are needed to balance quality-of-life issues, side effects of treatment, and treatment costs. Parkinson's disease causes a wide range of symptoms and complications. This topic covers the overall management of the disease. Management of specific symptoms is beyond the scope of this topic.

Living With Parkinson's Disease People with mild Parkinson's disease who take medication often regain a relatively ordinary activity level. The following suggestions may be useful: General advice Good nutrition Managing stress Traveling General Advice
    • Continue regular daily activities. This is important to help maintain mobility. In the early stages of PD, such normal movement should be maintained to the fullest extent possible. Do all you can to remain mobile and active. Lead as normal a life as possible; don't restrict activities you're able to do. A regular exercise program that involves some stretching and weight bearing (short of becoming exhausted) is beneficial because, as motor function becomes more impaired, an exercise program or physical therapy may help maintain or reestablish physical conditioning. Walking is excellent , and a 30-minute walk each day can be a realistic goal. Start with a 10-minute walk and build it up in 5-minute increments over the course of several days, according to your tolerance. You should walk when you feel your best and not put it off while you complete household chores, etc. In inclement weather, walk around the house with the radio or CD player on.

Frequently Asked Questions Here are some frequently asked questions related to Parkinson's disease. Q: Should I stop my Parkinson's disease medications before general surgery or an operation? A: Some neurologists recommend that medications be stopped 12 hours prior to general anesthesia for surgery. If you are on a complicated drug regimen, ask your surgeon prior to surgery to contact the physician responsible for your Parkinson's disease therapy so that your drugs can be given appropriately. Q: Can I drink alcohol if I am being treated for PD? A: A modest intake of alcohol is not a problem for people with Parkinson's disease. However, medications should not be taken with alcohol, and you should avoid alcohol altogether while you are building up the dose of a new drug. Q: Are there any vitamins or minerals that cure Parkinson's disease?

L ori has presented nationally on medical nutrition therapy for Parkinson's disease. She can work with you to move your diet toward the 7:1 model (7 parts carbohydrate, 1 part protein). This diet has been shown to give the most stable blood levels of certain amino acids (building blocks of protein), resulting in a predictable uptake of Sinimet. The result less "off time," improved mobility, and an improved quality of life. The 7:1 diet is a no risk, high potential benefit healthy eating approach. You can get more information by following this link to an article we've included here for you. Consult with your doctor to determine if the 7:1 diet is right for you. Contact a registered dietician for help in planning a 7:1 diet you can successfully follow.

Parkinsons Disease > Iron and Manganese Rich-Diet May Double Parkinson's Iron and Manganese Rich-Diet May Double Parkinson's Eating a diet that contains high-levels of the minerals iron and manganese could increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Karen M Powers and colleagues from the School of Public Health at the University of Washington in Seattle discovered that people who consumed the highest levels of iron and manganese (obtained from both food and dietary supplements) were nearly twice as likely to develop Parkinson's than those whose diet contained the lowest levels of the minerals. Powers suggests that as iron and manganese can both contribute to oxidative stress, her findings add support to the theory that oxidative stress may play a role in the degeneration of the dopamine neurons characteristic of Parkinson's.

Parkinsons Disease > Antibiotic May Prevent Brain Cell Loss Caused by Parkinsons Antibiotic May Prevent Brain Cell Loss Caused by Parkinsons Results of a recent study have shown that a modified version of the antibiotic tetracycline was able to prevent the death of dopamine-producing brain cell in mice with a Parkinson's-like disease. Such findings suggest that similar drugs may be able to prevent the progression of the neurodegenerative disease in humans. The researchers behind the study speculate that the modified drug, called minocycline, exerts its neuroprotective effect on the cells by blocking the action of nitric oxide (NO) in the brain. Previous studies have found evidence suggesting that NO released from a type of brain cell called glial cells may play a role in the death of neurons that occurs with Parkinson's. Another study recently found that the same drug delayed the death of mice made to show the characteristics of Huntington's disease, another neurodegenerative disorder. "With the evidence steadily accumulating that Parkinson's disease is a multifactorial oxidative disease, there is an urgent need for integrative management. The allopathic model that currently dominates Parkinson's management is obsolete. The major adverse side effects of the various drugs currently in use for the disease, combined with the limitations of the dopamine replacement strategy, dictate the need for alternatives.
