A Great Explorer
By Neil Gunn
In 1799 a young Scottish Borderer published his story of an epic African journey and became the toast of London society. Neil Gunn recounts his story The first volume of Mungo Park’s Travels into the Interior of Africa was published in 1799 to huge acclaim. Lewis Grassic Gbbon commented that: “London and the provinces devoured the book.”
Mungo Park was born in 1771 during the ‘Golden Age’ of Scottish Enlightenment, that period in our history that saw Scots lead the world in the fields of philosophy, economics, geology and science. With his parents encouragement he worked hard at the local grammar school. His father saw a career in the ministry for his son but the young Mungo had other thoughts. In 1785 Mungo Park was apprenticed to Dr Thomas Anderson in Selkirk and spent the next few years learning the rudiments of medicine as he accompanied the respected doctor on his rounds. 1789 was an important year for the young Borderer. He left Selkirk and went up to Edinburgh University to continue his medical studies. He didn’t graduate from the course but the university records show his attendance at lectures of chemistry, anatomy and surgery, medical theory and botany.

Download Description

Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa is Mungo Park's account of his first expedition to discover the River Niger and the fabled city of Timbuctoo. Travelling with only native guides, or for the latter part of his journey alone, Park endured tremendous hardships: he was repeatedly robbed, spent several months imprisoned by a Moorish king, and came close to dying of starvation and thirst. He eventually reached the River Niger, and travelled along part of it's course, before returning to the coast. His account of his journey gives a unique insight into conditions in West Africa before widespread European settlement, and has long been considered a classic work on African travel.

SUMMARY
The decision of a men's discussion society meeting in London in 1788 to promote the investigation and exploration of West Africa was principally one of intellectual curiosity on the part of the members. over the next forty years however, it led to the opening of this enormous and hidden area of the world as well as setting the foundation for the commercial and military domination of this part of Africa by the British and French empires. This was accomplished at little cost to the involved governments but at a terrible price paid by the ill-equipped vainglorious young men sent out by these armchair dilettantes. Water Music > Customer Review #1: Complex, funny, fascinating and imaginative; great adventure

T.C. Boyle tells this story with attention and ease. The book draws the reader as deep into the novel as Mungo Park and Ned Rise, its protagonists, are drawn into the heart of Africa. The tale is flush with compelling characters, a riveting story line and a unique marriage of marvelous fiction and fascinating history. Water Music is at once simple in its illucidation of two mens quests for explicit and vague goals, and complex in its rich weave and stitch of subplots, motivations and perverse parallelism. Neglecting the deference and influence of the writer, Boyle is a post-modern Twain or Swift, combining polemicism and ribauld wit with a gentle love of parable and unmistakable passion for language. The plot is as plausible and exciting as any set in West Africa and London circa 1800 and has a cadence and credibility that teaches as much as it hypnotizes the reader. Water Music is a relentless human adventure over unexplored terrain and into the essential question of individual purpose, meaning and place. The book is a vessel, its course and its wake, all in one.

Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa > Customer Review #1: The Intrepid Mungo Park

Kate Ferguson Marsters edition of Mungo Parks TRAVELS is an excellent example of the travel narrative - easily comparable with the Journals of Lewis and Clark or Francis Parkmans OREGON TRAIL. The book is broken into three parts: Parks travel narrative , Marsters Introduction and Major Rennells Geographical Illustrations Of Mr. Parks Journey (which is rather dry and dated). The Introduction is important in providing the history of Parks early years, the important role of the African Association and its leader, Sir Joseph Banks. More importantly the Introduction deals with the Bryan Edwards controversy. Richard Burton and Orlando Pattersons criticisms have held that internal African slavery and slave trading was not nearly so prevalent as suggested by Park. In light of this, Marsters statement that Joseph Banks, a critic of slavery, had to approve every piece of Edwards editing becomes extremely important. In addition, it is made clear that the reason for the stylistic differences is that the original TRAVELS was a book derived from Parks notes whereas the published work of his second, ill-fated journey was merely a compilation of those notes retrieved from the dead mans party!

"they supply the inhabitants of the maritime districts with native iron, sweet-smelling gums, frankincense, and a commodity called shea-toulou , which, literally translated, signifies tree-butter . This commodity is extracted from the kernel of a nut by boiling the nut in water...
The extract has the consistency and appearance of butter ; and is an admirable substitute for it. It is.an important staple in the food of the natives and therefore the demand for it is great. ...
The people were everywhere employed in collecting the fruit of the shea trees. These trees grow in great abondance all over this part of Bambarra. They are not planted by the natives, but are found growing naturally in the woods ; and in clearing wood land for cultivation, every tree is cut down but the shea.

promising relief from food shortages and threatened famine. Substantial expanses of greenery now mark the orange-brown landscape; dry ponds and riverbeds are filling; and the animals again have adequate forage and watering holes. Humans, however, must wait another month or two before the millet, now eight or ten inches high, is ready for harvest. And they must pray that the rains do not end prematurely, as they did last year, causing much of the crop to wither before it ripened. Meanwhile, a substantial amount of food aid has arrived from several foreign donors, including the US. (CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Africare, and Helen Keller International are distributing USAID-provided food through food-for-work projects.) Soaring grain prices stabilized and then fell, and it appears that traditional coping strategies – selling off livestock, eating leaves and other "famine food," cutting consumption to one meal per day or less, moving to towns to find temporary work or handouts – will enable everyone except the weakest and most vulnerable to survive until the next harvest. The Strong Brown God
At 2600 miles, the Niger is the tenth longest river in the world. Its existence was known since the time of the ancient Greeks (it was mentioned by Herodotus), yet its course and destination remained a mystery for over 2000 years.

c8 reels of 35mm silver-halide positive microfilm David Livingstone (1813-1873) is one of many Scots who played a major part in the development of modern Africa. As a missionary, an explorer, a doctor and a scientist, he pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge about Africa, fought against the slave trade and championed the Christian colonisation of central and eastern Africa. There are records of his travels in South Africa, East Africa and of his trans-African travels, as well as letters (32 from Stanley), sketches and maps. There are also letters and papers of Robert Moffat (1795-1883), his father-in-law, who was a pioneer missionary in the area north of the Orange River and travelled extensively on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Livingstone's first draft of Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa is included, as is his African journal, 1862-1863, and notes for his last journal. Of related interest is the journal of J Walker, who accompanied Henry Morton Stanley on his expedition for the relief of Emin Pasha. Earlier still was Mungo Park (1771-1806), the ill-fated explorer of the Niger. In one of his letters he records
