Safety tips for parents
Helpful safety tips for parents to teach their children when dealing with strangers, child molesters and getting lost in public places.
Is there any worse nightmare for a parent than to find out your child has been hurt or abducted by someone? Although there is little a five year old can do when pitted against a six foot, 200-pound man, there are a few things you can do to aide in your childs safety. Secret code All children should be taught a secret code that only you two know. In the case you actually need to have someone pick your child up, give them the code word/phrase too. Teach your child to always ask for this code before going with anyone. bodyOffer(16997) Any stranger hanging around a school- yard can find out a childs name just by sitting and listening to the children play. They can then go up and calmly say, Vicki? Hi, your mom sent me to pick you up. She has been held up and wanted you to come with me. So many times a child will fall for this. Once you believe your child has learned this, test them. Ask a friend or co-worker whom the child doesnt know to try to get your child to go with them. If your child obeys the rule, make sure you reward and praise her. Uniforms- Many times a uniform will get a child to do what they are told. Teach your child to be wary of a person in uniform that tells them to come along. If this is truly a police officer, they will need to have gone through the principle to get to your child. They will not mind going and verifying their presence with a school official. If possible, try to test your child on this one as well.

Life as a Parent
"You never listen to me" is a complaint heard as often from children as parents. Good communication helps children and parents to develop confidence, feelings of self-worth, and good relationships with others. Try these tips:
  • Teach children to listen... gently touch a child before you talk... say their name.
  • Speak in a quiet voice... whisper sometimes so children have to listen... they like this.
  • Look a child in the eyes so you can tell when they understand... bend or sit down... become the child's size.
  • Practice listening and talking: talk with your family about what you see on TV, hear on the radio or see at the park or store. (Talk with your children about school and their friends.)
  • Respect children and use a courteous tone of voice. If we talk to our children as we would our friends, our youngsters may be more likely to seek us out as confidants.
  • Catch children and teens being good. Praise them for cooperating with you or their siblings, or for doing those little things that are so easy to take for granted.

  • Foreword
Families play a vital role in educating America's children. What families do is more important to student success than whether they are rich or poor, whether parents have finished high school or not, or whether children are in elementary, junior high, or high school. Yet, for all that common sense and research tell us, family involvement often remains neglected in the debate about American school reform. To focus more attention on this important subject, the U.S. Congress recently added to an initial list of six National Education Goals another that states: Every school will promote partnerships that will increase parental involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional, and academic growth of children. The Office of Educational Research and Improvement has produced Helping Your Child With Homework to contribute to the drive to increase family involvement in children's learning. As the handbook points out, we know that children who spend more time on homework, on average, do better in school, and that the academic benefits increase as children move into the upper grades.

The following principles should be useful in establishing a childrearing method that is not too extreme: Start Early Although many parents believe that very small children are too young to understand, their early years are probably the most important opportunity for parents to start them in the right direction. Once good patterns are established, they will be easy to maintain.

How to handle Pornography
Some parents might think the only way to stop the infiltration of pornography into the minds of their children is by simply cutting off the source of the material. They would consider, for instance, not even installing or disconnecting the internet from the home. But while this may solve the problem temporarily, it does not teach young Muslims how to deal with this material when they see it everywhere else: on television, billboards on the street, or magazines, for instance. Nor does it encourage them to avoid this material when they have the opportunity to look at it outside of parental control. Below are some tips to help your child avoid pornography whenever and wherever he or she encounters it. Please note though, this is not a comprehensive list of possibilities, nor should all of the strategies presented be used on your child. Choose the right ones that can help him or her depending on age, and previous exposure to pornography. Tip #1: Establish your right and authority as a parent to know This is not something done by yelling and screaming. It's done calmly in all aspects of family life, and should be made clear on other issues, like who has the final say to decide when is bedtime or who decides 14-year-old Ilyas's curfew. Establish parental authority gently and wisely. It's easier to do this when kids are young.

93. Parenting Programs To Teach Children Values
Values parenting offers parenting programs, parenting advice, parentingtips, and skills, for parents to raise children and teach, values.
http://www.valuesparenting.com/monthly_value.php
Obedience to law, fairness in work and play. An understanding of natural consequences and the law of the harvest. A grasp of mercy and forgiveness and an understanding of the futility (and bitter poison) of carrying a grudge.
Justice and mercy these words seem too abstract, multifaceted, maybe even too religious for children to understand. Yet when they are broken down into their simplest form, they are the basic values for every household the values around which everything else revolves. There is both security and unity in the justice and fairness that exists in the home. The beginning lies in the developing of clear family laws and providing for repentance and apology as well as for consistent justice. Perhaps the two most important things we've ever learned in our family about justice and mercy were taught to us by our oldest daughter as she was growing up. The first lesson came when she was about seven. We had tried to set up some "family laws" for her and her five-year-old sister. We had done so democratically by asking them to suggest laws. We wrote their suggestions on a list, along with our own and ended up with twenty-four family laws, ranging from "don't hit anyone" to "don't plug in plugs." One Sunday seven-year-old Saren came home from Sunday School with a suggestion. "Dad and Mom," she said, "I think we've got way too many laws. I can't even remember half of them. I learned today that Heavenly Father only gave us ten laws! We need to simplify!"

For a fourth grader, this does not sound right. The reason Keith dislikes school though does not have anything to do with academics. Keith is being bullied before school, at school, and on the school bus. Who can blame him for not wanting to go into that environment?
The basic definition of bullying is when someone keeps doing or saying things to have power over another person. Bullying involves crossing into oneÕs space without permission.
IsnÕt bullying just something that happens to all children and weÕre just making a fuss over this? The children will get over it, right? ShouldnÕt we tell Keith to grow up and handle it? Wrong. Bullying happens to numerous children and adults shouldnÕt be ignoring it.
WHAT CAN A PARENT DO?
If Keith is being bullied and he is not reporting it to his parents then there are some very important questions to address.
¥ Why wouldnÕt he tell his parents?

such as their address, phone number, real name, or the address of their school to random people with whom they converse on the Net. For example, if a child meets someone during a chat session, it would not be wise to start giving out personal information. There are other situations in which they may be asked for personal information. For example, many sites ask for the user's full name, address, etc. on a registration page. Instruct young people to get parental permission before filling out registration forms.

How To Behave So Your Children Will, Too!
DR. SAL'S TOP 12
PARENTING TIPS Parenting requires countless sacrifices and continuous hard work, but the rewards are plenty. To be successful parents, Dr. Sal offers these tips:
  • Welcome change in yourself and your children. See change as positive. Seek self-improvement.
  • Possess good judgment. Know the difference between mischief and misconduct.
  • Have a sense of humor about raising children.
  • Believe that discipline is a teaching process. It is not simply punishment. Discipline is everything you do to teach children to be responsible and think for themselves.
  • Focus on the positive attitudes and behavior in their children. Call attention to positive qualities.
  • Use self-esteem as motivation. "You made a good choice. You should be proud of yourself!"
  • Behave yourself . Provide good example by being responsible, not perfect.
  • Behave consistently. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Follow through. Do not give in to misbehavior demands.
  • Behave proactively. Anticipate problems and plan to avoid them.
  • Use punishments that teach better decision-making.

How To Behave So Your Children Will, Too!
TEN TIPS ABOUT MONEY Sal Severe, Ph.D.
  • Explain the use of money. Begin as early as age three. Show how things are bought and sold at the grocery store, toy store, etc. Children need to see the real world use of money.
  • Give children a weekly allowance. Most parents have children earn their allowance through good behavior, responsibility and household jobs. If you attach money to chores, be sure you don't get manipulated. Don't take away allowance as punishment.
  • Increase allowances as children grow. Increasing responsibilities should result in increased allowance. Also, it is a good incentive to give extra allowance for extra work.
  • Introduce expenses. As allowance increases, the scope of expenses should widen. For example, teenagers should earn more allowance, but they should then have to use their allowance for dating and entertainment. Teens who insist on buying clothes with designer labels should pay the extra cost.
  • Teach home budgeting. Explain how a finite amount of money needs to be distributed for food, clothing, mortgage or rent, utilities, car expenses, etc. Include older children in family financial planning. Don't overprotect your children from this.
  • Teach wise consumerism.
