She took a pregnancy test and was thrilled to find out it was positive. She was in the midst of calling her husband when she stopped. "I took sinus medication for a few days last week," she said to me, looking panicked. "What will it do to my baby?" I was able to reassure Julie in this instance a few sinus tablets were not very likely, I told her, to have an adverse effect as long as she stopped taking them immediately. But had Julie come in to see me before she and her husband began trying to conceive, she could have saved herself some worry. A healthy pregnancy really begins before you conceive. Unless you're an elephant, of course, pregnancy lasts only about nine months. Yet the weeks prior to becoming pregnant and the early weeks of pregnancy are much more crucial than anyone used to believe. I and other doctors use the concept of the twelve-month pregnancy to emphasize how important those preconception weeks are and to dramatize the idea that a healthy pregnancy does indeed start before you get pregnant. By adopting a healthy life-style as soon as you begin trying to conceive no smoking, no drinking, no unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals, avoiding or treating infections, consulting with your doctor before taking any medications, staying fit, and eating well you can give your baby a head start toward a healthy life.
