RESEARCH IN PARAPSYCHOLOGY
How Much Research Has Actually Been Done in Parapsychology During the Last 100 years?
Critics sometimes love to argue that 100 years of research in parapsychology has failed to produce a reliable demonstration of ESP. But how much research has really been done during this period?
Text extract from original text: "ARE WE MAKING PROGRESS?" by Sybo A. Schouten, University of Utrecht, Parapsychology Foundation, 1988. Since a simple experiment can never constitute a reliable demonstration, they mean in fact that 100 years of research have failed to yield the knowledge to enable us to control the phenomena and to demonstrate ESP at will. This is correct, but this applies to many findings in psychology as well. Moreover, the "100 years" sounds very suggestive but does not take into account on how much research capacity this supposed 'failure' is based.

Can claims of ESP, or extrasensory perception, be studied as a science? Can claims of strange, psychic phenomena be subject to the scientific method? Parapsychology is the scientific study of Paranormal or Psi Phenomena. It is the careful investigation of events like mental telepathy, knowing the future or bizarre manifestations that seemingly cannot be accounted for by natural law or knowledge. The claim that parapsychology is a science excites some, and annoys others. So, is parapsychology a new science or an old fraud? Participants: Beyerstein, Radin, Schlitz, Tart, Trefil Barry Beyerstein is professor of neuropsychology at Simon Fraser University in Canada. He is a leading skeptic, on the Executive Council of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), and a frequent contributor to The Skeptical Inquirer. Dean Radin Marilyn Schlitz is Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, a leading research and membership organization devoted to interdisciplinary and diverse studies of the mind. Trained as an anthropologist, she has conducted some of the most important research in parapsychology.

Academics Academics Home Academic Departments Parapsychology Program Students wishing to to study parapsychology within the psychology major should carefully read the following information: Note that the printed College Catalogue also contains much of this information and is the "official" document to which you should refer. The information provided here is NOT "official."
The parapsychology courses are offered on an alternate year cycle. You should register for the parapsychology courses as soon as possible since they are in "high demand" and not everyone who wishes to take them will be accommodated. Anyone taking the Introduction to Parapsychology course (PS 250) must complete Introduction to Psychology (PS101) or its equivalent such as the high school AP Introduction to Psychology, or, Introduction to psychology at another college. You cannot take PS301 Experimental Parapsychology unless you have completed Behavioral Statistics (PS260) and Research Methods in Psychology (PS261).
You need to take the statistics course in the fall and Research Methods in the spring of the year prior to your taking the parapsychology sequence. On occasion, a section of Research Methods may be offered in the fall semester but you should plan on taking Statistics in the fall and Research Methods in the spring.

The phenomena in question fall into two broad groups. Extra-sensory perception , also known as anomalous cognition , includes telepathy clairvoyance , and precognition Anomalous operation includes psychokinesis (in the past referred to as telekinesis out-of-body experiences near-death experiences , and reincarnation . The general term "psi phenomena" (or the somewhat older term, "psychic phenomena") covers all of these categories. edit
    Status of the field
The standing of the field of parapsychology has always been controversial within the broader spectrum of science, and perhaps even more bitterly so today than in the past. The controversy tends to take center stage, at least in discussions taking place outside the field, and so there is an entire section of this article devoted to aspects of this debate, to give some idea of the critique of the field by its detractors, and of the counter arguments by its defenders. Other subarticles describe some of the history of the field and the current state of (claims of) the field. parapsychology "...parapsychology is the only realm of objective inquiry in which the phenomena are all negatively defined, defined in terms of ruling out normal explanations." James Alcock (2003) Parapsychology is the search for paranormal phenomena, such as ESP and psychokinesis . Most sciences try to explain observable phenomena. Parapsychologists try to observe unexplainable phenomena. Scientific methodology in this field dates from at least 1882 at the founding of the Society for Psychical Research in London, which continues to flourish. Its initial members sought to distinguish psychic phenomena from spiritism , and to investigate mediums and their activities. They studied automatic writing levitation , and reports of ectoplasmic and poltergeist activity. In America, Joseph Banks Rhine (1895-1980) conducted

Kosmos Bookstore logo: Rich with lucid instructions and practical insights, MIND SCIENCE dispels the metaphysical haze that all too often surrounds the subject of meditation. Based on a lively workshop with fellow scientists, Charles Tart shows how the pragmatic and scientifically-inclined among us can bring mindfulness into everyday life without religious baggage — while clearly explaining its many spiritual and health benefits. These highly interactive and often witty sessions in front of a skeptical audience anticipate the questions that any practical person might have about meditative mindfulness. If you've been looking for a clear teaching on how and why to meditate that is free of sectarian involvement, this is the book for you. MIND SCIENCE is based on a workshop at the country's leading scientific conference on the study of consciousness, held bi-annually at the University of Arizona at Tucson. Tart's jovial and wide-ranging style makes MIND SCIENCE suitable reading for intelligent lay people with a practical and scientific inclination, as well as for the academically- and scientifically-trained students of consciousness and related fields. MIND SCIENCE is, in fact, the only current book on meditation by an author who is also a well-respected scientist.
