The International Triathlon Union (ITU) have been pushing for the event to be included in the Paralympic Games since it became an official Olympic sport in Sydney last year. “We will very seriously consider triathlon for a possible part of our program in the future,” said Bob Steadward, president of the International Paralympic Committee. “You couldn’t ask for a better structure in sport. Olympic gold medallist Simon Whitfield will be running and right alongside will be some young high school kid who would love to be like him, and they get an opportunity to compete in the same environment. "I think that’s what makes triathlon not only such a unique sport but a really good sport when it comes to the whole philosophy of universality and sport for all. There’s a great representation there that most other sports don’t cater to.”

Despite their disabilities, Paralympic athletes display all the Olympic ideals.
By Jeanie Franco Marx star with a point missing that's the core of the 1996 Paralympics Games logo. Completing the picture, an Olympic flame arcs from point to point, igniting the determination that creates win ners. "Starfire" is an apt symbol for the 3,500 disabled athletes representing 127 countries. Come Aug. 15, champion swimmers will compete at Georgia Tech's Aquatic Center, while other events will pepper Atlanta, the first U.S. city to host the Paralympic Games. Launched in 1948 at England's Stoke-Mandeville Hospital to coincide with the London-based Olympic Games, the Paralympics got off to a rocky start until 1960 in Rome, when it became an official quadrennial event. Since then, it's grown from 23 countries t o 127 and from limited wheelchair sports to 17. They include track and field, basketball, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, tennis, fencing, rowing and judo. These athletes perform a balancing act, trying to keep their lives in sync. Despite daily workouts and training practice that eat up large chunks of each day with virtually no leisure time they still find time to work. That means extremely long days. Unf ortunately, family life suffers when you commit yourself to becoming a world-class athlete. Among the Paralympics champions who will compete in Atlanta's 1996 Games are Trischa Zorn, elementary school teacher and swimmer with 10 Barcelona gold medals; Scot Hollonbeck, Coca-Cola Olympic sports marketing coordinator and gold-medal wheelchair racer in the 4 x 400-meter and 800-meter events; and Linda Mastandrea, attorney/advocate for the disabled and national track-and-field champion, voted U.S. Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association "Athlete of the Year" in '93 and '95.

The Carnival is Over!
The eleventh summer Paralympic Games closed with a ceremony that was, as promised, informal, irreverent and one big party.
The infamous kangaroos on bicycles that first appeared at the closing ceremony of the Atlanta Olympic Games made an appearance, as did numerous references to the Olympic Games, including a posturing American track and field athlete.
The president of the IPC, Dr. Robert Steadward, declared the Games to be the best ever, a remark that was warmly endorsed by the capacity crowd at Stadium Australia which was later treated to a musical extravaganza.
More people have come to see Paralympic athletes in action in Sydney than at any previous Paralympic Games. Fittlingly, Australia won more medals than ever before, and topped the medal count. The Games have seen an extraordinary number of world and paralympic records set over the eleven days of competition. They have also marked a new and binding relationship between the Olympic and Paralympic movements, as well as the spectre of performance-enhancing drug-use by Paralympic athletes.

Click here for more on this story Posted: Wednesday October 18, 2000 11:42 AM Courtesy of WeMedia.com, Official Webcaster of the 2000 Paralympic Games By David Rosner The Paralympic Games parallel the story of disability sports not just in terms of evolution (from rehabilitation to competition), but of revolution (to high-performance sport). It's the story of a movement that knows no limits, no confines, no boundaries, only ever-expanding possibilities. Of course, the Paralympic Games weren't always the peak of elite competition, weren't always the world's largest sports event after the Olympics, weren't always the fastest-growing movement in international sports. But they were always, even before the first Olympic-style competition for athletes with disabilities debuted in 1960, infused with the Paralympic spirit. That Paralympic spirit can be traced to 1948 when Sir Ludwig Guttmann, a German-born neurosurgeon who emigrated to England in 1939 as a refugee from Nazi occupation, organized an athletic competition in Stoke Mandeville for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. Four years earlier, at the British government's request to open Stoke Mandeville Hospital's National Spinal Injury Centre, mainly to treat wounded servicemen, Dr. Guttmann had introduced a new medical approach embracing sport as a paramount therapy in the total rehabilitation of paralyzed patients. What began as rehabilitative recreation evolved into athletic competition-with Guttmann emerging as "The Father of Disabled Sport."

Paralympics
The first organized disabled sports games were held in 1948 in Stoke Mandeville, England. Sir Ludwig Guttmann invited World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries to participate in these games. What started in England soon became an international event. Today, the Paralympic Games are held the same year as the Olympic Games and take place in the same city. The Paralympic Games offer elite sporting events for athletes from six disability groups. Like the Olympics, the Paralympics have both summer and winter games. There are 18 Paralympic summer sports and three Paralympic winter sports. Paralympic Summer Sports
Archery: Archery includes singles, doubles and team events. Both the competition and scoring process are the same as those used in the Olympic Games.
Athletics: Track and field events are the most popular events in the Paralympic Games. Athletics are open to every disability class. Events include track, field, jumping, pentathlon, and the marathon.
Bocce: Bocce is played by athletes with cerebral palsy. This sport was introduced in the Paralympics in 1984. Bocce can be played individually or as a team.

HOME INTERNATIONAL GAMES MONTHLY NEWS NEWS BY NATIONS ... SEARCH Paralympics vs. Special Olympics Paralympics vs. the Special Olympics Editorial by Daniel Bell May 1999 This month, after a number of posts on the D-Sport newsgroup regarding the role of able-bodied volunteers in disabled sports, the subject shifted to a comparison of the Special Olympics and the Paralympics. The following vitriolic remarks were posted by one member of the group, a disabled athlete, about the athletes of the Special Olympic games. " Combining elite athletes with disabilities and the Special Olympics is a faux pas in serious disabled sport. Calling Special Olympics participants athletes is like calling my dog a doctor." "The International Olympic Committee calls the Special Olympics "distinctly different and profoundly opposite" to real sport for disabled and I, for one, am not in the least bit interested in working with any programs for Special Olympics. I would, however, be interested in helping out for real disabled athletes." I found these statements to be quite remarkable, evidence of an astounding misunderstanding of the athletes of the Special Olympics, and was shocked at the lack of outcry by the members of the group

Overview
The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes, similar in scope to the Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same host city/country. The difference between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games is that the Paralympics provide an elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability which precludes their involvement in open competition of the Olympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They are the best of the best; who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on the competitive playing field.

Introduction
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Since their humble beginnings, the Paralympics have blossomed and grown in size and complexity. The Paralympic Games are part and parcel of The Olympic Games and are held by the Olympic Host Country, following the Olympic Games. The Paralympics compete in the same venue and city as The Olympics. The Paralympic games have been held every Olympic year since Following the theme "Triumph of the Human Spirit" , the Paralympic Games are proud of the tradition they have established to bring elite challenged athletic competition to the forefront of public consciousness. Competitive sports have proved an effective vehicle to promote equality, inclusion, accessibility, and awareness about the capabilities of those with physical disability. Competitive sports dispel the age old stigma surrounding disability and illuminate the realm possibility. The Paralympics truly signify all that is right in sport The Paralympics is truly a competition of elite, world class, well trained, challenged athletes as opposed to a participatory event where all who enter receive a medal for involvement. The term "Paralympic" actually means "next to" or "parallel" to the regular Olympics. The only difference in the two is that the Paralympics provide elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional physical disability, which precludes their involvement in open competition of the regular Olympics. Thus, the difference between the Paralympics and the Special Olympics is distinct and profoundly opposite.

Founder, Owner and Director of the CORE Institute. A graduate of Harvard University, with a degree in Clinical Psychology. Sports Massage at the 2004 Athens Olympics: My Olympic sports massage experience began 1n 1994. While walking with my then 8 year-old daughter, Alana, through the Springtime Tallahassee Festival, we came upon a table that displayed the logo of the British Olympic Association (BOA). We quickly learned that we could buy a brick that would be added to a commemorative walkway at the Tallahassee City Hall in support of bringing the British Olympians to Tallahassee to train for the 1996 Atlanta Olympiad. Alana decided that she wanted to buy a brick from her piggy-bank savings and I decided that the CORE Institute should do the same. While we were filling out the paperwork I mentioned to Christopher Campbell, the local coordinator of the BOA, that I owned the CORE Institute and would be happy to meet with British Olympic officials about offering sports massage during the preparation camps that were scheduled for the summer of 1995 and the spring and summer of 1996. Christopher seemed pleased and promised me that he would pass along my business card to British team doctors who would visit later that year. Exactly six months later I attended a group meeting with the BOA medical team, local medical groups, and athletic administrators from Florida State University. At that meeting it was decided that the CORE Institute would support the camps with sports massage 12 hours a day, seven days a week. I also learned that we would need to staff the team with qualified sports massage therapists, not massage therapy students like I had envisioned.
