Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history. There are those who have dominated, like the great Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen who became the first woman to win four gold medals in a single Games, and Larissa Latynina of the Soviet Union, whose nine gold, five silver and four bronze over the course of three Olympiads remains a record for men and women. There are those who are renown for their "firsts" like Nadia Comanici who became the first Olympic gymnast male or female to score a perfect 10 in competition and American Joan Benoit who won the first women’s Olympic marathon in 1984. Women athletes in many countries have historically made a disproportionately high contribution to the medals count at the Games. This has certainly been true for Australia. In certain Olympic sports, particularly swimming and track and field, Australian women have been outstanding. For example in track and field up to and including Atlanta, since 1948 women have constituted just over 30% of the track and field team but have won 75% of all medals and 11 out of 14 gold medals.

in paralympics and the olympic Games, Special olympics is unique in that it encouragesparticipation and the year round, lifetime benefits of sports training.
http://www.canoe.com/Paralympics/what.html
What are the Paralympics?
A quick rundown:
Athletes:
Special Olympics involves over 500,000 athletes from 8 to 80 with mental retardation. Paralympics provides world-level competition for elite athletes with any disability. This year, for the first time, some individuals with mental retardation will compete in the Paralympic Games. Many of these athletes received their training through Special Olympics. Olympic Games are open to any athletes who qualify.
Competition: While competition and winning are just as important to Special Olympics athletes as those in Paralympics and the Olympic Games, Special Olympics is unique in that it encourages participation and the year- round, lifetime benefits of sports training. We call this "Training for Life." Research shows that Special Olympics participation leads to higher social competence and better self-esteem among participating athletes.
Ability Levels: Every year there are over 15,000 Special Olympics competitive events around the world. Competition in 23 sports is open to athletes of every ability level. Special Olympics does hold World Games every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games, to bring together Special Olympics athletes from around the world. The ninth Special Olympics World Summer Games in New Haven, Conn., in July, 1995, involved more then 7,000 athletes from over 140 countries and drew 500,000 spectators. The next Special Olympics World Winter Games will be February 1-8, 1997, in Toronto, Canada.

op Stories: Features: Opinion: ... Contact the editors: History of the Paralympics The Paralympic Games is the premier international event for elite athletes with disabilities and one of the largest sporting events in the world - bigger competitions than the Commonwealth Games and the Winter Olympics. They focus on the athletic achievements of participants, rather than their disabilities and the title 'Paralympic' is derived from the word 'parallel', as the games are conducted parallel to the Olympic Games. Athletes include those blind and partially sighted, amputees, with cerebral palsy, paraplegics, tetraplegics, wheelchair athletes and those with an intellectual disability. The Paralympic Games grew from the work of Dr Ludwig Guttman, a German-born neurosurgeon who established the National Spine Injury Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England in 1944. He first introduced competitive sport to rehabilitate soldiers with spinal cord injuries sustained in World War II.

History of the Paralympic Games
The Paralympic movement began with the idea of using sports as a practice for rehabilitating war veterans. In England in 1948 the neurologist, Sir Ludwig Guttman, decided to use sports to improve the quality of life of soldiers mutilated or wounded during the war. In July of that same year the first edition of the Stoke Mandeville Games was held, at the same time as the opening of the London Olympics. Four years later the International Games on Wheelchairs were held. After the Olympic Games of 1960 in Rome, the first Paralympic Games were held, in which 400 athletes from 23 nations participated. Throughout time the Paralympics movement - which until the Roman Games involved only athletes on wheelchairs - added new classes of participants with different types of physical, visual and mental disabilities. The prefix "para-", initially deriving from the word paraplegic, acquired a different meaning over the years: today it means parallel. The Paralympics are complementary to the Olympics. The general philosophy of the Paralympic Games is to follow the rules of the Olympic sports as much as possible. Such a philosophy is already implied in the name of the event. The term “Paralympic” derives from the word “Olympic” and the suffix “para”, a Greek preposition, which means “close to”. The Paralympic Games is an elite sports event in terms of both the organization and the actual competition.

The Paralympic History Overview
The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes. Although similar in scope to the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games provide an elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability, which precludes their involvement in open competition of the Olympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They are the best of the best, who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on the competitive playing field at the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same host city/country. The Paralympic Games are distinctly different than the Special Olympic World Games. The two, which are often confused as one in the same, are totally separate competitions. Each Games are developed by entirely different organizations which have different objectives. The Paralympic Games provide world-class competition for elite disabled athletes at the highest level. Much like Olympians, Paralympians compete for gold, silver and bronze medals against the best-disabled athletes in the world. Special Olympics International focuses on participation of everyone and involves athletes from ages 8 to 80 with mental retardation. All participants are considered winners and receive medals. The first Paralympic Games was held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Since its humble beginnings, the Paralympics has blossomed and grown in size and complexity. The Paralympic Games is part and parcel of the Olympic Games. The Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee organized the 1988 Paralympics to be held in the Olympic venues two weeks after the Olympic Games. Barcelona and Lillehammer followed suit hosting the summer and winter Paralympic Games respectively, utilizing a similar time frame.

Oct 21, 2000 Paralympic Games As you may have heard, the Paralympics are in town - just a mere two weeks after the Olympics. This weekend is the first full fledge weekend that the games are underway. Myself, a co-worker and two of his friends decided to meet at 8:30am at a train station. From there, we would take the train to the Olympic Park, and attend the games. The ticketing is different than the Olympics. The Paralympics sell "Day Passes" for $15 each. They allow you to enter the park for one day, and attend all events on a first come first seat available basis. Promo Material The Games will be held from 18 - 29 October, 17 days after the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games. There will be 4000 athletes from 125 countries competing at the event in the 18 sports on the competition program, 14 of which are also on the Olympic sports program. Unique to the Paralympic Games are boccia, goalball, powerlifting and wheelchair rugby. A Paralympic sports festival atmosphere will be created at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay, which is home to 14 of the 18 sports. Cycling, equestrian, sailing and shooting will be held at satellite venues within 30 minutes drive of Sydney Olympic Park. What is the background to the Paralympic Games?

Deseret News staff writer It was a climbing accident at the age of 16 that landed Philip Craven atop the organizational chart of the International Paralympic Committee.
Philip Craven
Well, perhaps Craven's ascent to the top of the group that oversees world-class sporting contests for "differently abled" athletes didn't happen in his formative years.
But his accident as a teen was a turning point for Craven. It allowed him to fine-tune his athletic skills, spread his leadership wings and raise his voice in support of the Paralympic Games.
During his time in the IPC's top post, Craven, who was elected in December, intends to "make certain that athletes with less movement will have just as great a chance to compete in Paralympic sport."

Competitive Sports For The Disabled The Paralympic Games are the zenith of competition for elite athletes with physical disabilities. The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that these world-class athletes should have opportunities and experiences equivalent to the non-disabled athletes. In order to compete in the Paralympics, each athlete must meet strict qualifying standards and be selected to his or her national team. They follow the Olympic Games every two years, with both summer and winter games. The Paralympics are not to be confused with the Special Olympics, for athletes with mental retardation. This year's Paralympics in Atlanta features 3,500 disabled athletes from 120 nations. The Paralympic Games began in Rome in 1960 and have been held every Olympic year since, usually in the city or country hosting the Olympic Games.
