About Athens The first Olympic Games were held in Greece more than two thousand years ago. When the Modern Games were revived in 1896, founder Pierre de Coubertin again chose Athens as the host city. In 2004, the games will return to their birthplace for a third time.

Kayaking was chosen since it is already recognized by the IOC, and offers Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to progress to a second ‘water’ sport. By highlighting the sport and offering training clinics during the 2003 World Summer Games, the hope was to encourage local Programs to develop this sport. [Photo by Adrian Melia, IRELAND OUT]
Special Olympics and Paralympics are two separate organizations recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The principal differences between the two lie in the disability of participating athletes and levels of sports ability. In addition, Special Olympics is the only organization that the International Olympic Committee [see Partnerships ] has given permission to use the word "Olympics."

ON-LINE BUYERS GUIDE by William Bishop Athletes are making history in the world of sports for persons with a disability and Canada is among the top nations involved. In 1973, Eugene Reimer, (a paraplegic wheelchair athlete who won a number of world records) became Sport Canada's Male Athlete of the Year for 1972, an honour no other nation has ever bestowed on a disabled athlete. Three years later, in 1975, the first tri-disability competitions were held in Edmonton, Alberta. They included the annual Wheelchair, Blind and Amputee Games. In 1983, athlete Rick Hansen was honoured with the first Lou Marsh Special Award of Merit, (given to Canada's most outstanding athlete) for winning nine gold medals at the Pan American Wheelchair Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation established the Dr. Robert Jackson Award for Ontario's Disabled Athlete of the Year in 1986. St. Catharines's Joanne Bouw, a cerebral palsy athlete was the first recipient, recognized for her accomplishments as a field event World Champion. Sports for disabled athletes did not always have a high profile. Over the years they have gone through many changes, survived many obstacles. The earliest record of Sport for the Physically Disabled dates back to World War I when it was initiated as a form of treatment, especially among the blind and amputees servicemen. But the interest and enthusiasm among the disabled was not long lasting. Prior to 1940, medicine was able to do little for disabled persons, especially those who suffered spinal injuries. The majority of the spinal injured died a short time after their accidents from ensuing complications and sometimes from the loss of the will to live.

    Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece
In 1948, Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition involving World War II veterans with a spinal cord injury in Stoke Mandeville, England. Four years later, competitors from Holland joined the games and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organized for the first time in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups were added and the idea of merging together different disability groups for international sport competitions was born. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden. Today, the Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups. They emphasize, however, the participants' athletic achievements rather than their disability. The movement has grown dramatically since its first days. The number of athletes participating in Summer Paralympic Games has increased from 400 athletes in Rome in 1960 to 3843 in Sydney in 2000. In Sydney, a record number of 122 countries, or 123 delegations including independent athletes from East Timor, participated at the Paralympics, making this the largest Games in Paralympic history. The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul Summer Games (1988) and the Albertville Winter Games (1992) they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics. On 19 June 2001 an agreement was signed between IOC and IPC securing this practice for the future. From the 2012 bid process onwards, the host city chosen to host the Olympic Games will be obliged to host the Paralympics as well.

    the paralympic games
The Paralympic Games: The Second Largest Sporting Event in the World and a Growing Force in the Olympic Movement Started in 1960, the Paralympics Games have become a vital part of the Olympic movement. Meaning "Parallel Olympics", the Paralympics are recognized by the International Olympic Committee and are Olympic equivalent competitions for individuals with disabilities. The Paralympic Games offer a multi-sport, multi-disability competition for elite, world-class wheelchair, amputee, cerebral palsy and blind/visually-impaired athletes. The Olympic host country holds the Paralympic Games two weeks following the Olympics, utilizing the same city venue. Only the highest achieving athletes in each sport can qualify for the Paralympics. The 2000 Sydney Paralympics hosted 3,912 athletes, 250 from the U.S., who won 109 medals. The U.S. took third place in the medal count behind Australia (149) and Great Britain (131). www.paralympic.org

Life Athens 2004 Athens faces challenge of expanded Paralympics 2004 organisers expect biggest-ever field after participation fees are scrapped
Athens is set to feel the knock-on effect of the overwhelming success of the Sydney Paralympics , with more athletes than ever targeting a place at the 2004 Games An unprecedented 4,000-plus competitors are set to descend on the Greek capital for the event that follows hot on the heels of the Summer Games. End to participation fees With the historic decision to scrap charges to athletes to compete, Athens faces a costly challenge to upgrade facilities and provide access to the largest ever Paralympic field. Equality of opportunity requires equality of access, the Athens organisers (ATHOC) admit and initial blueprints, presented to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) in July 2001, show they are prepared to start from scratch in order to ensure easy access throughout the city for the athletes. "The very meaning of the Paralympics - a term derived from parallel-Olympics - is to adapt the rules of Olympic sports with as few changes as possible," ATHOC says. "A number of difficult interventions in the city's busy centre, including the widening of many pavements, have been approved. The long term legacy for the city is worth the money and effort," says ATHOC Paralympics manager Aristotelis Kallipolitis.

Australian Federal Parliament I rise tonight to talk about the wonderful and inspiring events of the past few weeks - and the equally inspiring events we will see when the Paralympics begin on September 18. The Olympic Games are more than just a sporting event. It is not about medal tallies, although that is a measure of the success of our elite sporting programs. The Olympics represent an opportunity for nations to showcase their cultural, political, economic, social and sporting achievements - and in almost every respect Australia showed world-class performances in these areas. There are particular features of the Olympics that stand out for special mention. Second, the New South Wales Government and SOCOG, who despite some pre-Games problems, delivered a near perfect Games. As with many other interstate spectators, I was very impressed with the transport system and slickness of operations which, given the problems of Atlanta, is testament to an epic planning and operational plan. Third, the officials and administrators who created a seamless environment in which world class athletic competition thrived.
