Tame your Bird:
Bonding

Intensely social, wild budgies flock together by the thousands. A pet budgie that lacks an avian family will eagerly look to you for companionship. Given consistent attention and stimulation, a budgie can live happily for its entire life as a single bird. Budgies are among the easiest birds to tame, but they still require patience and empathy. Work for 15 or 20 minute intervals in a small room so you won't have to chase and scare your budgie. To maintain a good long-term rapport, be sensitive to your budgie's moods don't insist on playing, for example, if your budgie is eating or napping. Stroking: If approached with proper consideration, budgies can learn to enjoy being stroked by their owners. Most budgies detest having their feet, tails and backs touched, so avoid those areas. Budgies greet each other beak first, so start by lightly stroking your budgie's beak and the surrounding feathers. Tapping your budgie's beak lightly with a fingernail parallels a friendly beak-to-beak interaction. Your budgie may like its cere, forehead and tummy stroked as well. Many budgies like their head feathers gently blown or stroked in reverse direction, but don't touch emerging pinfeathers. Your budgie may eventually respond by "preening" your hair, or nibbling your fingernail. A healthy budgie may also regurgitate as a courtship gesture. Teaching parakeets to talk:

Childhood Memories of Terrific Pet Potential and Poor Care
by Sally Blanchard us for permission. Reminiscing About Our First Parrots "You're in a jam, Gracie" One time when my grandmother was visiting, Mickey landed on her shoulder as she was going out the front door and said "Shut the door stupid, the bird's out!" . Luckily, he stayed put as she quickly hurried back into the house. Mickey loved to admire himself in our antique wall mirrors so much that my father painted green leaves around the bottom of all of the hanging mirrors. This way the little narcissist couldn't see him self and left the mirrors alone. Dive Bombing Once my father caught him, the woman insisted that the fearsome flyer be placed completely out of sight or her husband would have to take her home immediately. I just couldn't understand and probably still can't why anyone would have such an overwhelmingly phobic reaction to my terrific little guy. This was even before Alfred Hitchcock's

    Budgies
Zoological Education Network c-2000 Budgerigars ("budgies") are small, colorful birds that are found in large numbers in the desert interiors of Australia. Because free-ranging birds are accustomed to going days without water, it is not appropriate in captivity to use drinking water as a vehicle for administering vitamins or medications. The normal free-ranging budgie is green; other colors have resulted from selective breeding, which has actually produced undesirable characteristics, such as a significant increase in body mass and unusual feathering that interferes with normal body functions. Budgerigars are very easy to breed in captivity. Green birds are the most disease-resistant and probably have the longest life expectancy in captivity. What to Expect from Your Budgie Budgerigars (commonly referred to as "parakeets" or "budgies") are quite, intelligent, nondestructive birds that are easy to care for. They are most popular and numerous companion birds because of their relatively gentle, gregarious and entertaining personalities. They do not tend to bond with an individual person, and frequently interact with all family members. Budgerigars are capable of developing a large vocabulary (perhaps 200-300 words) but some effort must be made to accomplish this, and their voice is not as clear as other pet bird species. Some individuals are also good at whistling.

Subject: New Bird Posted by: doby Time: 4:15 pm. This crazy bird showed up on my doorstep: (literally). It turned out
to be a she (she laid an egg on the second day! From what I
gather from various sources, her feathers were pulled out due to
"rough bird sex"). The underside of her wings, her butt, chest
and back of her head feathers were pulled out. I've had her about
a week and she has re "coop" erated and flourishing! She is all
white, so she kinda looks like a dove. Some aqua feathers are now coming in. I give her lots of praise when she preens herself (I heard she will do this for a mate/human she loves?) What does it mean when she stands on one leg? We had a conversation on the 5th day, and I've commited to start recording her more. I talk to her all the time and sing to her. She seems to really like that. I work at home so I spend lots of time with her. I had no idea that parakeets were so smart till I started doing research on the internet and heard a lot of the cool recordings.

    Frequently Asked Questions
The following are questions that I frequently get via email/instant message from new owners.
  • What can I expect the first couple weeks?
Well, first, don't expect your bird to be an instant velcro bird who loves spending tons of time with you. If you wanted something like that, you should've gone for a puppy or a kitten.
For the first week it's recommended that you NOT try to handle the bird, and just let it be. Only enter the cage to change food, water, and cage paper. This is to give the bird some time to settle down and settle in to its new surroundings.
If your bird is shy, it may take a little while before he'll readily come to you.
NEVER push a bird too hard. Your bird will give very clear clues that whatever you're doing is frightening or upsetting him. A totally flat crest, hissing, head down/beak open, snapping at you, and/or biting are all signs of a frightened bird. If your new bird exhibits these behaviors and you don't back off with what you're doing, you'll get a well deserved bite.
If your bird becomes frightened when you're too near the cage, back off a little bit until he calms down, then just sit there(below his eye level, this makes him feel more secure) and talk to him quietly.

    Budgies
Budgerigars (Budgies) are probably one of the most underestimated pet birds, in terms of their personality and pet potential. Because they are common, inexpensive, and have been around for a long time, people tend to think of a Budgie as boring. Nothing can be further from the truth. Some of the coolest birds I have known have been Budgies. I grew up with a Budgie, who lived to be 13. At the time that was fairly remarkable, but nowadays with improved diet and veterinary care, Budgies commonly live into their teens. They are full of energy, playful and clownish, with a bit of a mischievous side. They are easy for children to handle, if brought up around children who handle them regularly. Budgies' beaks are small enough that they may pinch a bit when they bite, but you can basically ignore it. They are very personable, and the males make quite good talkers if purchased when they are young and worked with. I have also found that males don't bite as hard as females, and so they may be a better choice for families with small children. Budgies are easy to sex when they're young, so picking out a male from a group of youngsters is less difficult than with other birds such as Cockatiels. When Budgies are very young, the cere (the skin around the nostrils) is a pale purple colour. At weaning age, which is about 5-6 weeks old, the males will begin to show patches of bluish colour on the cere and the females will have a more solid pink or beige tone to their ceres. At breeding age the female's cere colour turns a darker brown.
