BUDGIES
Budgerigars ("budgies") are small, colorful birds that are found in large numbers in the desert interiors of Australia. Because free-ranging birds are accustomed to going days without water, it is not appropriate in captivity to use drinking water as a vehicle for administering vitamins or medications. The normal free-ranging budgie is green; other colors have resulted from selective breeding, which has actually produced undesirable characteristics, such as a significant increase in body mass and unusual feathering that interferes with normal body functions. Budgerigars are very easy to breed in captivity. Green birds are the most disease-resistant and probably have the longest life expectancy in captivity. Avoid purchasing a bird mill budgie sold in most chain pet stores. Contact a breeder with references to get a healthy bird.

What to Expect from Your Budgie
Budgerigars (commonly referred to as "parakeets" or "budgies") are quiet, intelligent, nondestructive birds that are easy to care for. They are the most popular and numerous companion birds because of their relatively gentle, gregarious and entertaining personalities. They do not tend to bond with an individual person, and frequently interact with all family members. Budgerigars are capable of developing a large vocabulary (perhaps 200-300 words) but some effort must be made to accomplish this, and their voice is not as clear as other pet bird species. Some individuals are also good at whistling. Not talking at all is not unusual.

    Parakeet care
The parakeet is a small, slender seed-eating descendant of the parrot. There are more than 115 species that still reside in their natural habitat of Australia, and can often be found roaming in large flocks in the tens of thousands. Typically, the parakeet is a colorful bird that tends to live in warmer climates and nest in the hollows of high trees. Today, the Budgerigar or "shell" parakeet is the most popular caged bird in the world. Owners range from one-pet lovers to Budgerigar showers and breeders, who have made a living from these colorful, easy to care for birds. bodyOffer(945) Whether you've been a parakeet owner for years or are just in the beginning stages, there are things you should know about properly caring for your bird. HOUSING Your Budgie will need a place to call home and as is the case when caring for any animal, bigger is better. Most veterinarians suggest that cages are at least three feet in length. Anything smaller will not give your bird enough room to exercise. Cages are made of a variety of materials including plastics, metal and wood. Never purchase a cage that appears too flimsy, as Budgies like to peck and chew, and can easily gnaw their way out of thin plastic or wooden framed cages. Where you place your cage is up to you, but remember, parakeets are noisy, early morning birds. Positioning them near bedrooms is usually a mistake. Also, be sure to keep your pet's cage away from drafts, windows and out of direct sunlight.

    Types:

    Australian parakeets (sometimes called "American")
English budgies (type seen in exhibitions/shows)
Budgerigars, often called "parakeets," still reign as the most popular pet parrot. Many people wonder if a parakeet and a budgerigar, also called budgie, are the same thing. A budgie is always a parakeet but a parakeet isn't always a budgie. To clarify, parakeet means Small parrot. There are a number of birds in the parrot family that have parakeet in their names such as Bourke's parakeets, green cheeked parakeets,, orange chinned parakeets, etc. A budgie is a type of parakeet. Sexing:
Most young budgies have stripes, or a wavy pattern, across their forehead which they lose after the first molt (molting is the shedding and regrowth of feathers). You may not be able to determine the sex of y6ur budgie until after the first molt; the cere is beige or light pink color in young budgies. After the first molt (4-6 months of age) a male's cere will turn blue, and a female's will stay beige/tan. Of course there are exceptions to the rule depending on the color mutation of your budgie. One way to tell a young male from a female is their way of communicating. A young male will sit and sing away in a very sweet voice. A female sounds more like she is lecturing the world on everything it is doing wrong. Males tend to be much more vocal than females too. Males generally do not develop problematic behavior as pets. Hens can become nippy and when hormonal can surprise you by suddenly grabbing your lip or another sensitive place.

CARING FOR BUDGIES Undisputed Heavyweight Champion FEW PEOPLE, if any, will challenge the fact that the budgie or budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus , is the most popular and widely kept pet bird in the world. The total number of pet budgies kept worldwide runs into the millions. All this has come about in just over 150 years since this tiny 7-inch green parakeet was first imported from its homeland in the dry, arid areas of Australia, where it is best known in ornithological circles as budgerigar a name probably derived from the Aboriginal name " Betcherrygah ". It All Started The first reports of small, bright green parakeets received in Europe came from Captain James Cook who discovered Australia in 1770. Travelers on expeditions into the interior of Australia saw numerous flocks of the small green parakeets. However, it was not until 70 years later that John Gould, the eminent explorer and naturalist brought the first Budgerigars back to England in 1840. These live examples of the budgerigar created quite a stir at the time. Shortly afterwards, a number of budgerigars arrived in America. The first color variant-a yellow budgerigar with red eyes-was bred in 1870 in Belgium. This caused a sensation, but the Lutino (yellow) mutation did not survive, as there was no knowledge of genetics among breeders.

    http://www.birdcareco.com/English/Arts/Species_notes/Budgerigars/budgerigars.htm
One of the most popular cage and aviary bird anywhere in the world is the budgerigar. These delightful little Australian parakeets are now available in a huge array of colour variations and are ideal as both pets and for serious breeders and exhibitors. In the wild the budgerigar is a prolific breeder whenever the rains fall in their semi-desert environment. However the modern domesticated budgie is far harder to breed than you might expect. Selection for specific colours and show traits has been achieved through rigorous line breeding and this has depressed the fertility of much of the stock. As a rule the bigger the bird the harder it will be to breed. Breeding from unrelated birds will produce better fertility in their offspring but may make it harder to "fix" the particular show characteristics you are looking for. This is a constant dilemma for exhibition breeders. Generally Budgies respond well to good nutrition. Pet birds will live longer, happier more vital lives if their seed is supplemented with Feast eggfood, Daily Essentials3 and Calcivet (CalciBoost). Breeder birds will be more fertile and productive if the eggfood is further enhanced with ProBoost SuperMax. For more information take this link to our

By clicking these links or cutting and pasting them into your web browser they will take you through to their respective websites. You will find the Eucalyptus referred to as a gum tree in some of these articles. Eucalypts have a special place in the life of the budgerigar The wild budgerigar has evolved alongside the Eucalypt tree and over a million years has developed an intimate bond with the tree and its leaves. Wet eucalypt leaves excite and invigorate both the wild and aviary budgerigar into a frenzy of joy. They love to bath in the wet leaves and breeding hens destructively chew the bark searching for trace elements and lysine, the breeding protein. The eucalyptus oil from the leaves has medicinal properties that stimulate the immune system and promote a strong natural resistance to disease.

To me the budgie is the perfect beginners bird, very hardy, modest needs and relatively simple to breed.
When breeding budgies in my experience, budgies are best kept with their own kind, as they can sometimes be a menace to other breeding species.
They insist on pulling nesting materials from finch nest or simply entering other parakeets nest boxes and in general just becoming a pest to others,
however if kept with their own species i.e. other budgies then they are a very sociable species with very little in the way of problems. Size:
    Feeding:
A simple seed mix containing all of the various millets INC. USA White, Australian Panicum, Hungarian Red, Australian Jap type millets, are used for the basic diet. Many companies now sell ready mixed millets designed specifically for budgies.
