About this Guide
Destination: Paraguay offers a closer view of this land of rivers, a landlocked republic in the heart of South America. A small nation, Paraguay shares borders with the continent's two largest countries, Brazil and Argentina. Paraguay's history and culture have been shaped by its geography. The activities in this guide emphasize the interaction between the people and their beloved land. Most can be adapted to the study of any country and culture. The activities in this guide have been grouped into three academic levels: grades 3-5, grades 6-9, and grades 10-12. The six basic themes of geography serve as the fundamental organizing structure of the units. The themes and the national geography standards based on each are found on page 3 of this guide. Each activity is coded by number to the standards to which it best relates.

Geography studies the relationships between people, places, and environments by mapping information about them into a spatial context.
The geographically informed person knows and understands:
1. How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective
2. How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context
3. How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface Places and Regions
The identities and lives of individuals and peoples are rooted in particular places and in those human constructs called regions.
The geographically informed person knows and understands:
4. The physical and human characteristics of places

    Background:
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large, economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.

    Origin
The archaeological records supports its cultivation between 300 and 2500 BC in Peruvian desert oases (Weiss 2000, Smith 2002). Although no archaeological evidence of peanuts has been uncovered in the area due its tropical climate, the Gurarani region of Paraguay, eastern Bolivia, and central Bolivia showed the greatest diversity of wild varieties of Arachis species. The cultivated peanut was likely first domesticated in the valleys of the Paraguay and Prarana rivers in the Chaco region of South America (Fig 1). The plant is believed to have been originally domesticated by predecessors of the Arawak- speaking peoples who now live in its homeland.

The first written account of the crop is found with the Spanish entry into Hispanola in 1502, where the Arawak cultivated under the name of mani (Sauer 1993). Records from Brazil around 1550 showed the crop was known there with the name mandubi. Early Spanish and Portuguese accounts record the presence of crop through of the West Indies and South America.

Paraguay - Geography Officially Republic of Paraguay, republic (1992 est. pop. 4,930,000), 157,047 sq mi (406,752 sq km), S central South America. Bolivia and Paraguay are the two landlocked nations of the continent. Paraguay is enclosed by Bolivia on the north and east, Brazil on the west, and Argentina on the south and east. The capital and by far the largest city is Asunción. The eastern part of the country, between the Paraguay and Paraná rivers, where most of the population lives, is a lowland, rising in the east and north to a plateau region. The Paraná, south of the Iguaçu River (with its magnificent falls), separates Paraguay from Argentina. The Paraguay River also forms a border with Argentina from its confluence with the Paraná north to the Pilcomayo River. The section west of the Paraguay River is a dry plain, part of the Chaco (see Gran Chaco). Cattle are raised and quebracho is found in the woodlands of the Chaco Boreal. Administratively, the country is divided into 19 departments. All the important cities are in the east. Besides Asunción, they are Villarrica, Concepción, and Encarnación.
