Dr. Branislava Susnik's extraordinary contributions to this field of study – backed by archaeological research and secondary sources – distinguish between three great human groupings among the prehistoric communities. First of all, an Australian-type racial group of a clearly Paleolithic culture appeared around 6000 BC. Its members were hunters, fishermen and gatherers that settled in the Chaco. The ethnic groups about which the most is known from this period are the Guaycurúes (the Abipón, the Mocobí, the Toba and the Mbyá) and the Maká. In the eastern region, an ancient population known as the Lágido-Melanésico group emerged, also of a Paleolithic culture, according to the archaeological findings at Lagoa Santa del Brasil. This ethnic group occupied all of the eastern region of present-day Paraguay from at least 5000 BC. Remains of this pre-historic group survived up until recent history, such as the Guayanas, the Ingai and the Ivytyrokai.

Country Profile

Flag of Paraguay Background:
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large, economically important areas were won from Bolivia.
The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.

    Film Culture in Paraguay:
    Interview with
    Hugo Gamarra Etcheverry
by Noel King Augusto Roa Bastos and Hugo Gamarra Noel King currently teaches film in the Department of English, Journalism and European Languages at the University of Tasmania. Vou para casa I'm Going Home (Portugal/France, 2001). During the lunch-interview Hugo spoke about his background, film culture in Paraguay and his cinephile tastes.
-NK Noel King novel that persuaded you to try to make a career in film. Hugo Gamarra : My passion for film started with my grandfather (I was raised by my grandfather and grandmother) who was an obsessive filmgoer and who would carry me with him to the movies, when I was very little, where I would eventually fall asleep. He took me to the movies for the first time when I was one year old! Thanks to my grandfather I also learned as a child to enjoy comics and later read my first books: novels by Jules Verne, Paul Feval and Victor Hugo. I use my second last name as my surname in memory of him. Son of Man (Monthly Review Press, 1988). And somehow reading that book gave me the certainty that I could be a filmmaker. The book tells Paraguayan myths through human stories that are mythical, epic and yet related to Paraguayan landscapes and Paraguayan history, specifically the Chaco War of 1932-35

    What does cinema
    mean for Paraguay?
by Hugo Gamarra Etcheverry Translated by Imogen Williams Augusto Roa Bastos in The Gate of Dreams Hugo Gamarra Etcheverry, aged 46, is a filmmaker, Director of the Asuncion International Film Festival and President of the Paraguayan Cinémathèque. This article was originally published in the Paraguayan newspaper, Diario Noticias on December 23 1995, as part of a series of articles dedicated to the 100 Years of Cinema celebrations. As the 20th century draws to a close, the first century of motion pictures, it is unthinkable that there could be countries without their own national cinemas. Just as individuals benefit from portraits or images of themselves, societies also need to have their own images projected on the screen in order to reflect on questions of identity, history and destiny; and to affirm the unique characteristics of their language, the way they are, how they express themselves and see the world. Nevertheless, for a country like ours, which is backward on all fronts, the cinema is barely given the attention of a distant spectator. Paraguay was a glaring absence in the retrospectives that marked celebrations of the first century of cinema throughout the world. It is a nation without moving images, an invisible country in an age of civilization distinguished by mass audio-visual imagery, narrative and storytelling. Paraguay and filmmaking , is the only organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of film culture in Paraguay); and finally, there has never been implemented legislation for the promotion, production, exhibition, distribution, and discussion of film.

RACIAL, CULTURAL AND ETHNO-HISTORICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NATIVES FROM PARAGUAY (by Prof. Adelina Pusineri , Director of the Etnographic Museum "Andrés Barbero") 1. The natives of Paraguay belong, racially to three human types: 1.1 In Eastern Paraguay, riverside of the high and middle Paraná River, the proto-residents of this region occupied it before the scattered immigration of the Guarani. They belonged racially to the languid-melanesian human group, of low stature and dolicocefalía with high cranial vault; their representatives were the Kaingasges-Gés. 1.2 in the Chaco Region, the natives belong to the pámpido-Australian racial type, of high stature, with dolicoide head, high cranial vault, sometimes with carema formation. (The Chané-Arawak did not belong to this racial type, being Amazonian immigrant of the region of the Andean Mountain range.) 1.3 The Guarani settled in Eastern Paraguay. They were of Amazonian racial type, protomalayo-mongoloid, with typical braquicefalía, low stature and yellowish complexion. From the colonial time to the present, admixtures left its print. The first "earth´s youths" of the XVI century were the mestizo Hispanic-Guarani, continuing such a crossbreeding, although more limitedly. Among the Guarani survivors there are many mestizos, but living in the indigenous communities. They are considered Guarani. Among the Chaco´s people, the coexistence with the "white environment" caused a frequent crossbreeding, the proportion according to the ethnical conscience of the tribal groups. In the prehistoric time the inter-ethnical crossbreeding was frequent, and in the colonial time there were unions between Guarani and black mulattos.

    53. Paraguay, A Culture Shock
In general I enjoyed the 8 years I lived in paraguay. I got to learn a newlanguage and a new culture. I got to do quite a bit of travelling too.
    http://www.gtcreations.com/splash/travels/py.html
In November 1987 I moved to Paraguay, South America. My parents had already been there for two years. I didn't speak Spanish but quickly got hold of a phrase book and started communicating.
Paraguay itself is vastly different from South Africa, where I grew up. I had to get accustomed to buying my vegetables at the market, which was a lot of rickety little tables in the open air market square. At first I lived in a large town called Caaguazú, where my father had started a sawmill and furniture factory. Most of the roads were dirt roads but downtown had some cobble and cement roads.
Then after 7 months I got a job teaching English at a British institute in the capital city, Asuncion. Later on I also started teaching aerobics . It was a whole lot more modern than the town I had got used to. Asuncion has some lovely shopping malls and modern supermarkets. Shopping downtown is interesting for they close from 12 to 3 p.m. for siesta, which means they roll down large steel shutters (which makes window-shopping impossible).
Transport is mainly by bus, which is dangerous but efficient as there are so many people in Paraguay who do not own a car. Driving in general is dangerous and it seems there is not much respect for life.
