Theater is a popular medium, with occasional offerings in Guaran as well as in Spanish. Visual arts of startling unconventionality can be seen in many galleries. Paraguay's pre-eminent literary figure is the poet-novelist Augusto Roa Bastos. Paraguayan music is something of a curiosity - despite the fact that the majority of the population still speaks the native tongue, the music is European in origin, with little or no traces of Black, Brazilian or Argentinian influences. The guitar and harp are popular instruments and songs are usually slow and lachrymose. Dances, such as the polka and bottle dance (so-called because performers swing around with a jar on their head) are, however, much livelier. Agustn Barrios (1885-1944), one of Latin America's most revered composers for the guitar, often performed his music in full Guaran costume, promoting himself as the Paganini of the guitar from the Paraguayan jungles. Roman Catholicism is officially the country's religion, but the influence of the church is less pronounced than in many other Latin American countries. Other religious groups include fundamentalist Mennonites and the controversial New Tribes Mission, an evangelical group which operated with the collusion of Stroessner's dictatorship. Country Info Paraguay Introduction Paraguay General Data Paraguay Maps Paraguay Culture ... Paraguay Time and Date Paraguay Culture Back to Top Paraguayans of all classes viewed family and kin as the center of the social universe. Anyone not related through blood or marriage was regarded with reserve, if not distrust. People expected to be able to call upon extended kin for assistance as necessary and counted on them for unswerving loyalty. Godparents (whether or not they were kin) were important as well in strengthening social links within the web of kinship. Migration was a perennial fact of life: peasants changed plots; men worked on plantations, factories, and river boats; women migrated to cities and towns to find employment in domestic service. Since the mid-nineteenth century there also had been a large contingent of emigré Paraguayans in Argentina. In the early 1970s, Paraguay's eastern border regionlong underpopulated and undevelopedreplaced neighboring Argentina as the major destination of most Paraguayan migrants. Historically, land in the region had been held in immense plantations; the inhabitants were largely tropical forest Indians and mestizo peasant squatters. Beginning in the late 1960s, however, government land reform projects settled as many as 250,000 rural Paraguayans in agricultural colonies in this area. Many others bypassed the government entirely and settled in the region on their own. Improvements in transportation and the construction of massive hydroelectric projects brought more far-reaching changes in the 1970s and 1980s. Economic growth drew tens of thousands of migrantsimmigrants from neighboring Brazil as well as Paraguayan nationalsinto the eastern border region. Their sheer numbers transformed the east from a sleepy hinterland into a maelstrom of change. In the process, both Indians and traditional small farmers were dispossessed of their lands and their traditional livelihood. As the construction projects were completed in the early 1980s, the region saw increased rural unrest as the peasants who had temporarily held jobs in construction found that there were no unclaimed agricultural lands for them to occupy.

Try tucking into locro, a maize stew, mazamorra, corn mush, mbaipy so-ó, a hot maize pudding with meat chunks, and sooyo sopy, a thick soup made of ground meat and served with rice or noodles. Desserts include mbaipy he-é, a delicious mix of corn, milk and molasses. Tea or mate is consumed in vast quantities while mosto (sugar-cane juice) and caña (cane alcohol) are also frequently imbibed.

As with all the countries of the Americas Paraguay saw its cultural traditions enriched by the contributions of different groups migrating to the country. Spaniards, Italians, Germans, Russians, Jews, Poles, Ukrainians, Mennonites, Australians, Japanese as well as people from latitudes in very small groups. Almost all of them settled down in colonies or small settlements where they maintained their customs and traditions and, at the same time, they actively integrated themselves into the life of the country. Contemporary Paraguayan culture is today best characterized by its multicentricity and multiculturalism as a result of the diversity of ethnic tribes and peoples that have crossed paths and settled in present day Paraguay since the pre Columbian period until the present. Nevertheless, most prominent among this plurality is a mestizo cultural matrix rooted in Guarani autochthony and the Hispanic European transcendence that shaped the colonial period and solidified after independence.

LANGUAGE The current population of Paraguay is the result of the blending of two ethnically and culturally diverse groups: one American, the other European, also know as Guarani and Spanish. This population has characteristics that differ to those found in other American regions. The interaction between the reduced number of Spanish and the large indigenous population has taken place since the beginning of Paraguay's conquest and colonization. This is mainly due to its geographical isolation and the absence of precious metals. Nowadays, the total Paraguayan population is practically a mixture of the two groups. Paraguayans continue to be Nationalists and much of that emotion seems to be related to the feelings about the language. In Paraguay, neither of the two languages has prevailed, making one disappear and apparently, it does not seem possible in the long run. There is a dialect known as Jopara. It cannot be considered as a new language because of the interference of Castellan on Guarani but possibly with time it can be.

Paraguay Paraguay is South America's 'empty quarter', a country little known even to its neighbours. PJ O'Rourke summed it up bluntly when he wrote 'Paraguay is nowhere and famous for nothing' - and then, on a short visit to cover elections, promptly fell in love with the place. You might well do the same. Paraguay has taken steps to overcome its political, economic and geographic isolation and now welcomes visitors. The country has a relaxed riverside capital, impressive Jesuit missions, several national parks and the vast, arid Chaco - one of South America's great wilderness areas.
