Hang-gliding and Paragliding
Use of National Trust properties for hang-gliding and paragliding is not great due to the specific requirements of the activity, such as topography and terrain. Current levels of use are generally acceptable, largely as a result of working closely with national and local clubs. A national precedent agreement for gliding on Trust sites has been prepared in conjunction with the British Hang-Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA).
Guiding principles 1. The National Trust welcomes controlled hang-gliding and paragliding on its land, recognising that these activities seldom cause significant disturbance provided particular care is taken with regard to livestock and birds.
2. There are management benefits associated with licence arrangements and so the National Trust should ensure their continued implementation.

Parakarting, Land Sailing, Kite Buggying, Power Kiting, Kite Jumping, Kite Boarding and Kite Surfing All these activities require a large flat expanse such as a sandy beach, short grass, tarmac, or open water. As they are relatively new activities, their use has so far been fairly unregulated. The Trust has only a few sites that meet the requirements for these activities and therefore the use of National Trust properties is not great or widespread.
Guiding principles 1. The National Trust recognises the pleasure that these activities bring. However, these activities on Trust land can compromise conservation objectives and the enjoyment of properties by others. 2. When these activities are likely to have an adverse impact on wildlife, especially birds and livestock then they should be relocated and/or rescheduled to minimise such impacts.

PILOTS FACE HEALTH-CARE DISCRIMINATION People who hang glide or paraglide or engage in other recreational activities could be denied health coverage by their employers' group health plans if new regulations are left intact by the federal government. USHGA urges all pilots to submit letters to three federal agencies in an effort to overturn the new rules. The new regulations were jointly issued by three federal agencies on January 5th, in the closing days of the Clinton administration. While published as final rules, there was also a request for comments by April 9, 2001. Applied to pilots, the new rules do not allow a person to be excluded from his or her employer's group health plan due to hang gliding or paragliding activity. Ironically however, the rules would allow medical claims to be denied in the event of a flying injury. In a kind of government double-speak, a summary of the new rules states that "While a person cannot be excluded from a plan for engaging in certain recreational activities...a plan can nonetheless exclude benefits for injuries because they were sustained in connection with various recreational activities..." Unless the new rule is modified, USHGA fears that it's members could face denied coverage after being injured while flying.

D ixon White loves to teach beginners and has devoted his professional life to competent, enjoyable, and patient instruction. In 1999, Dixon won USHGA's first Paragliding Instructor of the Year award . In 1998, he received his fifth USHGA Diamond safety award M arty Devietti is a full-time veteran of paragliding since 1991. His accident free flying and years of teaching earned him the year 2000 Instructor of the Year award from the USHGA, making him the 2nd individual to receive this distinctive award. Marty is a natural teacher with the skill to present any aspect of the sport and the methodology to keep it all exciting and fun. Marty is a fixed wing, instrument rated pilot with a degree in Aviation Flight Technology from Central Washington University. D enise Reed learned after a few skydives that she loved being under a canopy floating through the air. At home in Alaska, she saw paragliding for the first time, and knew instantly that this was the sport she had dreamed about. Shortly after learning to fly paragliders, Denise discovered that she wanted it to be a full time part of her life. Leaving behind a career in environmental chemistry, she began a year long apprenticeship at AirPlay Paragliding, learning the art of teaching people how to fly, and became a full time instructor. D oug Stroop has a strong background instructing outdoor recreational activities, including scuba diving which he instructed for 4 years. He has been striving to bring the same level of professionalism and structure found in the diving industry to the fledgling sport of paragliding. Because of his dedication of paragliding instruction, Douglas Stroop was nominated for the USHGA’s 2003 Instructor of the Year award.
