Papua New Guinea When both Margaret Meade and Jacques Cousteau are passionate about the same destination, you know it is truly something special.
The essence of Papua New Guinea begins and ends with its warm, smiling faces, its extraordinarily preserved traditional cultures and its raw physical beauty.
In the Highlands, attendance at a traditional sing-sing is your chance to absorb the richness of time-honored tribal rituals as expressed in song, dance and vividly colorful hand-crafted costumes.
Along the Sepik River, cruise to mystical villages where spirit houses abound and the preserved art form of woodcarving is mastered by skilled makers of incredible masks, figures and musical instruments. Take lessons in woodcarving or sago-making from your village hosts.
The natural beauty of Papua New Guinea stretches from towering mountains to lush valleys to sparkling seas to mighty rivers. Experience pristine nature at its glorious best - from rare species of brightly colored birds to beautiful wild orchids and so much more.
The enchanting faces of the village children, the soulful pride of tribal cultures and the deep spirituality of ancient practices make your visit to this land a lasting journey for the heart, the soul and the mind.

Fiji
Fiji is famous for its spectacular firewalking displays. This ancient religious ceremony requires great strength and discipline of the mind, body and spirit and participants must observe strict traditional protocol before walking on the red-hot stones. Firewalking in Fiji originated on the island of Beqa and this is the only place where a genuine ceremony can be found. According to Fijian mythology, Tui Qalita was granted the ability to walk barefooted on white-hot stones by a God called Veli. Traditionally Gods are summoned to observe the performance before it begins.
The Cook Islands
During the week leading up to 1 November, the people of the Cook Islands prepare for All Souls Day, cleaning family graves and adorning them with frangipani garlands and candles. This special day is held to honour their ancestors and is celebrated with gifts of food, drink and flowers, which are taken to family graves. Although it is a Catholic tradition, All Souls Day is practised by all Cook Islanders. At night, the candles are lit and left to burn out.
Papua New Guinea
Papau New Guinea's tribal festivals draw thousands of spectators to experience cultural displays of traditional dance, crafts and rituals. The annual Mt Hagan Show held in August features more than 50 'Sing Sing' groups. Dressed in bilas (traditional costumes) of elaborate headdresses and shell breastplates, hundreds of dancers whirl to beating drums. The country's largest clan gathering is held in September at Goroka in the Highland province. This spectacular cultural festival draws 70-100 Sing Sing groups from around the country.

Adelbert Mountains
Rain forest Village woman from Adelbert area Cloaked in lowland rainforest and sparsely populated, the Adelbert Mountains are the home to unique flora and fauna and strong cultural traditions. Location
The Adelbert project area encompasses approximately 965 square miles of the western Adelbert Mountains and lies about 15.5 miles northwest of Madang Township on the north coast of New Guinea. Its topography is mostly mountainous with steep dissecting valleys, which at lower altitudes grade into broader riverbeds. The area is subject to frequent, though moderate seismic activity. Flora and Fauna
This geographically young region is remarkably diverse with an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 species of vascular plants. In 1999 the Conservancy conducted a partial botanical assessment of the area and identified nine new plant species (two of which were named for Consevancy scientists). The Adelbert Mountains are home to more than 700 species of birds, including 38 of the world’s 43 species of bird of paradise, the lesser and magnificent birds of paradise among them. The rare fire-maned bowerbird also makes its home in the area, and can be found nowhere else on Earth. Tree kangaroos, giant bandicoots, alpine wallabies and critically endangered bougainville monkey-faced flying foxes all roam the region’s strikingly rich habitat.

    ISOLATION AND ANTIQUITY
It is now generally accepted that the southern hemisphere continents and the landmass of India were once part of a single southern continent called Gondwanaland. Click on the image to view a map of Gondwanaland. This huge landmass straddled the South Pole during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. However, by the Triassic and Jurassic periods (230-150 million years ago) the New Zealand and Tasmanian landmasses had started to move away. The last links to Australia probably existed until the Cretaceous period (135-100 million years ago) by which time the Tasman Sea was opening up. By this time the ancestors of many of the plants now found in our podocarp forests were established on the landmass that was to become New Zealand. During the Cretaceous period, Gondwanaland continued to break up with India and Africa drifting to the north, South America to the west and Australia, with its marginal islands of Tasmania, New Zealand and Papau New Guinea, drifting off to the east. Antarctica remained over the South Pole.

For the past few months there has been an exhibit with a difference on display at the New York Natural history museum:
    A BODY ARTS EXPO!
We were fortunate enough to visit this fascinating display, and were really impressed by the amazing amount of information and exhibits on show. We spent 4 hours wandering around looking at the ancient artefacts; reading the detailed and well researched text and watching the two short films highlighting ancient and modern day body modification practices. Unfortunately photography and video-recording were not permitted, but note taking was allowed - so use your imagination to picture the scene as I explain to you what we saw. After purchasing tickets (at $15 each, which included full museum access) we took the elevator to the 4th floor and saw a huge tattooed banner advertising that we had found the correct venue. We entered through glass doors down a small corridor with exhibits placed along the walls. These exhibits were a combination of everything that we could expect to see inside - a mixture of old and new body modification rituals: The classic 1984 tattooed photo of Horiyoshi III cradling his infant son; An old painting of a native American woman holding a baby in a head re-shaping papoose device; a life size painting of Edith Burchett fully tattooed by her husband (George Burchett) from the early 1900's. He is credited with tattooing King Alfonso of Spain, King Frederick of Denmark and King George V of Great Britain. These varied visual displays captivate all who enter into this darkened corridor. It intrigues the visitor and makes you want to see and learn more. It throws the history of these bizarre practises in your face and entices you to open your mind as you walk further in.

HOME WORLDWIDE Demographic Trends Overview ... Resources Demographic Trends by Subregion East and southeast Asia UNFPA has programmes in the following East and Southeast Asian countries Young people (under 25 years) constitute a sizeable and growing proportion of the population and their reproductive health concerns are a major issue, especially in view of the spreading HIV/AIDS pandemic. The large ageing population is emerging as an area of concern. Declining fertility and increasing longevity mean that the number of older people is getting larger relative to those in their working years. Several of these countries have witnessed marked improvements in the areas of health, nutrition and education. However, some continue to grapple with low per capita income, rapid urbanization, inadequate access to quality reproductive health services, high rates of infant and maternal mortality and high rates of abortions. Gender inequity, gender-based violence and trafficking of women and children continue to be serious issues. South and west Asia UNFPA has programmes in the following South and West Asian countries Afghanistan * Bangladesh * Bhutan * India *The Islamic Republic of Iran * Maldives * Nepal * Pakistan * Sri Lanka In 2001, the population of the South and West Asia subregion exceeded 1.5 billion, and is expected to increase to 2.5 billion or more by 2050. Thus, every fourth person in the world today is from South or West Asia.
