Panic Disorder
Ongoing research has increased the knowledge and understanding of this Disorder and is clearly evident in the current version of the DSM...No-4. In the DSM-111 and the DSM-111R no distinction was made in the different types of panic attacks. A panic attack was a panic attack. DSM 4 recognises three different types of panic attacks.
  • uncued (spontaneous) panic attacks
  • cued (specific) panic attacks
  • situationally predisposed panic attacks
Spontaneous panic attacks relate to panic disorder Specific panic attacks relate to social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. Situationally predisposed panic attacks may occur on exposure to the situational cue or trigger, but do not necessarily occur immediately after the exposure. The symptoms of a panic attack are described in the DSM-4 as a "discrete period of intense fear or discomfort in which four (or more) of the above symptoms develop abruptly and reached a peak within ten minutes. Correspondence: PD Dr. B. Bandelow , Dept. of Psychiatry, The University of Göttingen, Germany Abstract Keywords : Panic Disorder; Agoraphobia; Drug treatment, Psychological treatment Introduction Patients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PDA) as defined by DSM-III-R can be effectively treated with psychological and psychopharmacological treatment modalities. For an overview, all 77 PDA studies that could be traced by computer-aided literature search were evaluated (update of study [2]). In Table 1 and Table 2, the results of controlled studies are listed. A summary of these results is presented in Table 3. As placebo treatments are usually highly effective in panic disorder [1], only studies should be taken into account that used a drug placebo, a "psychological placebo" or a "waiting list" condition as a control group. Treatments that have proven effective in such comparisons include: benzodiazepines (e.g. alprazolam [1])

104. The Panic Program - What Are Anxiety Disorders?
An educational and interactive Web site dedicated to providing information about panic disorder for both consumers and physicians. What is panic disorder?
http://www.paniccenter.net/program/overview/intro.cfm
Panic Disorder and agoraphobia are anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are very common mental health problems. Doctors classify anxiety disorders into several different types including Panic Disorder Agoraphobia Social Phobia Specific Phobias ... Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder , and Generalized Anxiety Disorder . Each anxiety disorder has its own distinct features. However, all anxiety disorders share the common symptoms of fear, anxious thoughts, and avoidance. What is Panic Disorder? Panic disorder is defined as the experience of repeated and unexpected panic attacks. A panic attack is a brief episode of intense fear or discomfort that is accompanied by four or more of the following symptoms: A panic attack happens when the brain's normal reaction to dangerous situations (commonly called the fight or flight response) gets "switched on" at the wrong time. The problem is that panic attacks happen when the person is not in any real danger. Panic attacks usually last for a few minutes but some are longer. Most panic attacks reach their peak between 10 and 30 minutes after they start. The symptoms usually fade over an hour or so. Other symptoms include an overwhelming sense of danger, terror or impending doom and an urge to escape the situation. A panic attack is not the same as feeling a little nervous or anxious about something. People who have a panic attack have a terrible experience. They really feel like they're going to die, go crazy, loose control, or be humiliated. Nothing bad really happens but the experience is overwhelming. People who experience their first panic attack often go to their local hospital emergency room because they think that they're dying from a heart attack or some other problem.

Ok so I have not posted in a while. Honestly, it's just because there has not really been much to talk about. My therapist thinks I have a depressive personality disorder on top of my other problems. I really don't agree with that. I think I just suffer from depression.
I have been working, which has not been the most fun. They have me on for 5 days this week. I didn't want that. I only wanted to work part time. I am miserable going to work, but that is just my depression. The only reason I really go is to make some money. I may not be there that long. I am more than likely going to take a summer school class later this summer, which means I will have little time for work.
*sigh* I feel empty inside of me.

Well...I got the job. Most people would be thrilled but I am just sorta blah! At least I will get some cash.
On a different note, I have still been pretty depressed recently. Things are just not going well in general. I feel very empty inside. I am not really sure where to turn. My anxiety has been rising and I have been feeling more insecure than usual. I am starting to wonder if I have social anxiety disorder too.

Welcome to Meowzer's Page. I have created this page in order to provide information for others who suffer from the same disorders that I do. Please be aware that for the most part anything stated about the conditions on this site are from my experience. I would recommend seeking medical advise from a doctor or naturalpath if you have not been diagnosed. The Internet is an excellent place to do research and to hear from other people with the same health concerns, but a proper diagnosis from a professional is important. The site will be under contruction for quite some time and I will be adding to it and modifying it as I have the time and energy. Powered by Bravenet Visitors: Powered by Bravenet

Recognizing Panic Disorder People with panic disorder experience frequent, unprovoked panic attacks that involve some or all of these symptoms:
  • Racing heartbeat Chest pains Terror Fear of dying Dizziness or lightheadedness Nausea Flushes or chills Difficulty breathing Tingling or numbness Feelings of unreality Fear of losing control or doing something embarrassing
Panic disorder strikes between 3 and 6 million Americans, and is twice as common in women as in men. It can appear at any age in children or in the elderly but most often it begins in young adults. Not everyone who experiences panic attacks will develop panic disorder for example, many people have one attack but never have another. For those who do have panic disorder, though, it's important to seek treatment. Untreated, the disorder can become very disabling. Panic disorder is often accompanied by other conditions such as depression or alcoholism, and may spawn phobias, which can develop in places or situations where panic attacks have occurred. For example, if a panic attack strikes while you're riding an elevator, you may develop a fear of elevators and perhaps start avoiding them.

Panic Disorders:
A Comprehensive Overview Preface
Top Index This essay summarizes current information about panic disorders and their treatment. It is based almost entirely on publicly available information gathered during the years 1998 through 2000 from sources (not specifically cited) that include published research papers (most available through MedScape or MedLine), published textbooks and trade books authored by qualified mental health professionals, articles in WebMD and the New York Times, the opinions of clinicians specialized or experienced in the treatment of panic disorders, and the experiences of some hundreds of individuals (patients, health care professionals, and peer counselors) who have shown up in various Internet-based support communities focused on panic disorders or other anxiety disorders. The intent is to introduce the reader to the wide body of knowledge that exists today and to integrate and disseminate a variety of emerging insights often omitted from the narrow classical view of these disorders. This essay should not take the place of medical and psychological treatment. Individuals who believe they may have panic disorder should be evaluated by a physician familiar with the complexities of panic disorders and the conditions that mimic or accompany them (some of which are discussed herein) and should receive an appropriate combination of pharmaceutical and psychological treatment from qualified caregivers specialized in this family of conditions.

Recognizing Panic Disorder Panic disorder is characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms that may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal distress. These sensations often mimic symptoms of a heart attack or other life-threatening medical conditions. As a result, the diagnosis of panic disorder is frequently not made until extensive and costly medical procedures fail to provide a correct diagnosis or relief. Many people with panic disorder develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), effective treatments have been developed to help people with panic disorder.
