Imagine yourself relaxing by the pool. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, you feel faint, your chest hurts, you can't breathe, your legs tremble, and you think your are dying. You may be having a heart attack or you could be one of several thousand Canadians suffering from panic disorder. What is panic disorder? Panic Disorder (PD) is marked by repeated attacks of panic that occur unexpectedly in the absence of any external threat (i.e. out of the blue and without any obvious reason). These attacks begin quickly and build to a peak rapidly (usually in 10 minutes or less). They are often accompanied by a sense of imminent danger or impending death and an urge to escape. Panic attacks are often described as "the most terrifying experience I've ever had". They leave the individual emotionally drained, frightened, feeling vulnerable and anxious about their health. PD sufferers often live in fear of having another attack . They may also worry about the possible implications of the attack (e.g., losing control, having a real heart attack, "going crazy"). Some individuals will significantly change their behaviour (e.g., quit a job) in response to the attacks. PD can lead to other problems such as agoraphobia. Often people with agoraphobia refuse to leave their homes. Some will leave home but only when accompanied by a trusted companion. Others are frightened of being alone.

Panic Disorder
Panic disorder is one of the so-called anxiety disorders. Panic disorder is the result of an increased level of anxiety which is caused by a change in the way a small organ called the Amygdala, in the brain, responds to anxiety provoking thoughts or situations. When this process becomes disrupted, the sufferer develops feelings of anxiety which may escalate into panic attacks, this is when is said to have stepped into the realms of panic disorder. Anxiety has such diverse and sometimes extreme symptoms. BUT, this is caused by the same internal mechanism in every single sufferer. The brain thinks it is behaving normally as it has become re-set at a higher than normal level of anxiety due to a catalyst of some sort; the catalyst is unimportant actually, what is important, however, is that an internal switch, which activates the anxiety response in the brain has been 'adjusted' to a higher level of anxiety and it is this that causes and perpetuates the panic disorder. I don't like the term disorder, it suggests illness and anxiety isn't an illness, it's a natural device that can become disturbed. Regardless of how the anxiety affects you mentally or physically, the very same internal mechanism is responsible, so the curative process is the same in every case regardless of age, race or sex.

P anic disorder is a common and treatable disorder. Children and adolescents with panic disorder have unexpected and repeated periods of intense fear or discomfort, along with other symptoms such as a racing heartbeat or feeling short of breath. These periods are called "panic attacks" and last minutes to hours. Panic attacks frequently develop without warning. Symptoms of a panic attack include:
  • Intense fearfulness (a sense that something terrible is happening); Racing or pounding heartbeat; Dizziness or lightheadedness; Shortness of breath or a feeling of smothering; Trembling or shaking; Sense of unreality; Fear of dying, losing control, or going crazy.
More than 3 million Americans will experience panic disorder during their lifetime. Panic disorder often begins during adolescence, although it may start during childhood, and sometimes runs in families. If not recognized and treated, panic disorder and its complications can be devastating. Panic attacks can interfere with a child's or adolescent's relationships, schoolwork, and normal development. Children and adolescents with panic disorder may begin to feel anxious most of the time, even when they are not having panic attacks. Some begin to avoid situations where they fear a panic attack may occur, or situations where help may not be available. For example, a child may be reluctant to go to school or be separated from his or her parents.

WHAT IS PANIC DISORDER?
Most people with panic disorder also feel anxious about the possibility of having another panic attack and avoid situations in which they believe these attacks are likely to occur. Anxiety about another attack, and the avoidance it causes, can lead to disability in panic disorder. In the United States, 1.6 percent of the adult population, or more than 3 million people, will have panic disorder at some time in their lives. The disorder typically begins in young adulthood, but older people and children can be affected. Women are affected twice as frequently as men. While people of all races and social classes can have panic disorder, there appear to be cultural differences in how individual symptoms are expressed.

Panic D isorders are typically characterized by sudden, inexplicable feelings of terror and a fear that one is going crazy, losing control, or on the verge of death. Because they can appear spontaneously and seem unpredictable, these "anxiety attacks" often produce a companion state of persistent worry about when the next attack will occur. Left untreated, panic disorders are seriously debilitating and can progress into the development of phobias and severe limitations on the enjoyment of life.
is dedicated to the clinical care of patients, public education and ongoing research concerning all aspects of panic disorder . This effort is supported by physicians in several different specialties, panic disorder experts from all over the world, and especially from a highly educated group of "citizen scientists" who have helped to create a first class archive of answers to Frequently Asked Questions and an active and ongoing discussion group about the theory and treatment of " panic disease ."
