The executive branch includes a president and two vice presidents. The legislative branch consists of a 72-member unicameral Unicameralism is the practice of having only one legislative or parliamentary chamber. Many countries with unicameral legislatures are unitary states, which consider an upper house or second chamber to be unnecessary, in many instances having abolished the second chamber where one existed. This is either because an elected upper house has duplicated the lower house and obstructed the passing of legislation, like the Landsting in Denmark (abolished in 1953), or because an appointed chamber has proven ineffectual, like the Legislative Council in New Zealand, (abolished in 1951). The Swedish Riksdag was reformed in 1970

Pan-American Highway's missing link
The Darien Gap is said to contain a "motherload of biodiversity."
Controversy surrounds effort to extend road through rain forest
In this story: November 25, 1997
Web posted at: 2:42 p.m. EST (1942 GMT) From Correspondent Gary Strieker DARIEN GAP , Panama (CNN) Here, where Central and South America come together, lies a rain forest containing one of the richest ecological regions on Earth. It's also an obstacle to the completion of the Pan-American Highway, more than 16,000 miles of continuous road from Alaska to the tip of South America. The only missing link is a 54-mile stretch through two national parks one in Panama, the other in Colombia that contain the Darien Gap's more than 3 million acres of unspoiled wilderness.
A L S O :

The region is a "motherlode of biodiversity ... (and) ... one of the most important tracts of forest remaining in the Americas," says Hernan Arauz of ANCON, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of Panama's natural resources.
Road completion debated
Supporters of the highway cite both symbolic and economic reasons for completing it. It's outrageous, they say, that at the dawn of the 21st century the Americas are still not united because of a few miles of missing road.

... Central America /Panama PANAMA History and Government
History: The Panama Canal Zone became an American Protectorate. The canal was completed on 15 August 1914, although Panama remained under effective American control until 1939. The country’s domestic politics were reasonably stable until the 1968 military coup, led by General (later Brigadier-General) Omar Torrijos Herrera. He held effective power, despite surrendering the presidency during his later years, until his death in plane crash in 1981. 4 years earlier, the Americans had agreed to turn over the canal to full Panamanian control at the turn of the century. During most of the 1980s, the country was run by Torrijos’ former intelligence chief, now the head of the armed forces, Manuel Noriega. The general’s policies and his personal activities, including alleged involvement in drug trafficking, produced very strained relations with the USA. American development aid and military assistance were cut but with little effect. US intervention became more likely after the Panamanian presidential election of May 1989. This was won by the principal opposition candidate, Guillermo Endara Galimany, who took 62 per cent of the vote. However, the election was almost immediately annulled. After an attempted coup in October 1989 – believed to have had US backing – Endara was quickly crushed by Noriega’s forces. The only means of getting rid of the troublesome dictator was military intervention. So, in December 1989, US President

Print This Frame Panama Introduction Top of Page Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.
