US History Reconstruction to Present The Role of Panamanians in Panamanian independence During the late 19th century the United States emerged as one of the newest world powers, and with a victory in the Spanish-American in War the US acquired major colonial possessions in Latin America. According to Walter LaFeber in "Teaching Panama to Behave," from Major Problems in the Gilded Age and The Progressive Era, establishing a canal that would link the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean was a major goal of US foreign policy. It was needed, argued politicians, to help develop new markets for US goods in the Pacific and provide quicker access to Hawaii. Ultimately, a site in Colombian province of Panama was chosen to build the canal, however, Columbia refused to ratify the proposed agreement. To secure a favorable sight, the US helped to engineer a revolt to separate Panama from Columbia. Although the United had a hand in Panamanian independence, local Panamanian sentiment played a major role. While the Unites States was a significant player in the independence of Panama, local Panamanians were pondering separation from Columbia long before. The role of the US in Panama was not to ignite the flames of independence, but to manipulate that existing feeling to serve its own needs to create a canal that would open up the Pacific Ocean. With the help of a Baunau-Varilla, a Frenchman, top US officials in the State Department were able to organize the Panamanian revolutionaries. After revolutionaries initially sized the isthmus the governor of the province, who was appointed by Columbia, joined the revolution. To ensure that the revolution would stand, US sailors landed the next day and prevented Colombian troops from attacking the revolutionaries. The US was not the reason that revolutionary feeling arose in Panama, but it was the catalyst for the actual revolution

Welcome to the SSQQ Geography Quiz! This quiz is on the level... no jokes, a few curveballs, but mostly on the up and up. I have little doubt there is a mistake in here somewhere, but I researched the answers carefully enough to make it a fair test. I think you will enjoy testing your wits! Some of the questions are easy, but some will separate the brains from the brawns. I would like to find out who is SSQQ's most "Worldly Person". Please email your answers to Rick Archer at dance@ssqq.com I will send you the answers immediately if you get at least half right or appear to have tried hard. Some people ask for the answers without taking the Quiz. Forget it, Pal! Yes, go ahead and use your reference books. Everyone else did!! We originally ran the contest in July, 1999, but not many people did well. The second time around, in 2001, we had five people get over 20 out 26 right. If you do a good job, I will give you credit in the next SSQQ Email Newsletter. If you would like to read the story about the event that inspired the SSQQ Geography Quiz plus read a funny article by Dave Barry
