Culture
Panama's arts reflect its ethnic mix. Indigenous tribes, West Indian groups, mestizos, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Swiss, Yugoslav and North American immigrants have all contributed ingredients to the cultural stew. Traditional arts include wood carving, weaving, ceramics and maskmaking. Spanish is the official language, though US influence and the international nature of the canal zone reinforce the use of English as a second language. West Indian immigrants also speak Caribbean-accented English. Indigenous tribes have retained their own languages. Panama is predominantly Roman Catholic, but there are sizable Muslim and Protestant minorities and small numbers of Hindus and Jews.

Panama Culture - Business: How things are done
Panama Business: Greetings and Courtesies
Panama Business: Ethic and Framework
Panamanians are generally considered relaxed, easygoing, and informal by Latin American standards, although they nevertheless have a regard for formal dignity and hierarchical and class distinctions. Although they have become more accustomed to North American business norms, their values continue to emphasize the importance of personal relationships, and they still take time and effort to establish a personal relationship before a business relationship. Because of its important location in international trade, Panamanian-born citizens represent almost all of the world's cultures and religions. Often referred to as a "melting pot" of races, like the Panamanian national dish sancocho , all of the different ingredients retain their own distinct identity while adding flavor to the whole dish. There is no racial hatred; perhaps the clue lies in the mixing of the population. You will find every nuance of skin colors and races, including blacks descended from freed or escaped slaves (Cimarrones ); South Americans, Japanese, and Chinese; merchants and immigrants from Europe, Hindus, etc.

Panama History
The first signs of human settlement in Panama are thought to be about 10,000 years old. Six different Native American cultures can be identified today: The three largest are the Embera Indians of the Darien jungle area, the Kuna of the San Blas Islands, and the Guaymi Indians of the western provinces of Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro. Spaniard Rodrigo de Bastidas sailed along the Caribbean coast of Panama in 1501, and Columbus arrived in 1502. Despite dropping anchor in what is now the mouth of the Panama Canal on the Caribbean side, he never realized how close he was to the Pacific Ocean. In 1513, Juan de Balboa landed in the area, hiked across the Darien jungle and became the first European to see the Pacific. The Spanish used Panama as the transhipment point for treasure and goods being sent between the west coast of South America and Spain. As a result, buccaneers desiring Spanish loot set their sights on the area. By the 1700s, pirate attacks made it too dangerous to continue using the route, and ships started sailing around Cape Horn. Panama went into a decline.

FOLKLORE AND CULTURE There are six different Indians Cultures in Panama and each one of them practices its very own typical ancestral customs. Each province of Panama has a varied Folklore reflected through its dances, music and cuisine. In the deeply catholic provinces of Cocle, Herrera and Los Santos churches are found on the main town square (Plaza) as was the Spanish tradition. Nata, one of the oldest colonial cities, boasts the oldest church of the American Continent. One of the yearly festive highlights is Carnival, celebrated throughout the country in the month of February.
