Pesky Palindromes
A palindrome is a sequence of one or more characters that reads the same from the left as it does from the right. For example, Z, TOT and MADAM are palindromes, but ADAM is not. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to write a program that reads a sequence of strings and for each string determines the number of UNIQUE palindromes that are substrings.
Input and Output
The input file consists of a number of strings (one per line), of at most 80 characters each, starting in column 1. For each non-empty input line, the output consists of one line containing the message: The string ' input string ' contains nnnn palindromes. where input string is replaced by the actual input string and nnnn is replaced by the number of UNIQUE palindromes that are substrings. For input string ADAM, the UNIQUE palindromes are A, D, M and ADA so the correct output would be The string 'ADAM' contains 4 palindromes.
Sample input
boy adam madam tot
Sample output
The string 'boy' contains 3 palindromes. The string 'adam' contains 4 palindromes. The string 'madam' contains 5 palindromes. The string 'tot' contains 3 palindromes.
Note
The 3 unique palindromes in 'boy' are 'b', 'o' and 'y'.

    Palindromes
All languages contain in their vocabulary words or sentences which have a specific property: they are invariant with respect to the order in which they are read. Such words are called palindromes (again from Greek). Thus, some words contained in the list below have been found by a special program in the Czech National Corpus : for instance, the word mínìním (lit.: by opinion ) is one of such palindromes found. The list of Czech palindromes (common words only): a, aga, aha, bab, blb, bob, cuc, cídíc, cílíc, cítíc, dohod, dud, dìd, gag, i, jej, jetej, je¾ej, jeèej, jéj, k, kajak, kecek, klk, kok, krk, kuk, le¾el, lil, li¹il, lál, madam, mechem, medem, mejem, melem, menem, metem, meèem, mim, minim, máchám, mám, márám, mávám, mém, míjím, mílím, mínìním, míním, mísím, míøím, mýlím (only in spoken Czech), mým, nejen, nepochopen, nepotopen, nesen, nezasazen, nezaøazen, nesen, nán, nón, o, oko, ono, pochop, pop, potop, píp, radar, rotor, s, ses, sis, slils, snesens, tahat, tet, tát, tít, tùt, týt, u, uchu, v, vymyv, vìdìv, z, zaraz, ¹ílí¹, ¹í¹, ¹íøí¹, èuè, èíè, úlù, úzù. Having the whole repertory of the Czech palindromes at your disposal, you can form your own story out of these words. You can draw inspiration from the following tale, which is not so stupid as it may seem, given the very limited means you have at your disposal (some nice proper names are used, too):

    http://my.tbaytel.net/forslund/palindro.html
    Palindromes in ANS
Palindromic numbers (also called palindromes), are numbers such as 7245427 which is the same number when the digits are reversed. Prime palindromes exist, but these must have an odd number of digits. In ENS (base ten), 101 is the first three digit prime palindrome. However in ANS, 101 = A1, so the first prime palindrome in ANS is 131. Some numbers in ENS are also palindromes in ANS. For example, 21 (base 10), is 10101 in binary in ENS and 1221 in binary in ANS, and both are palindromes. On the other hand, 1001001 is a binary palindrome in ENS, but converts to 112121 in ANS, which is not a palindrome. There is an interesting procedure commonly called the 196-Algorithm, that operates as follows. Select any number with two or more digits. Reverse the number and add it to the original number, and repeat the procedure on the sum until a palindrome results. In ENS, most numbers create palindromes, however, a palindrome for the number 196, has never been found - hence the name of the procedure. An interesting thing happens when ANS is applied to 196 :
The number 94039 = 93A39 (in ANS) which is a palindrome!

    NEW WORD PALINDROMES
    by Will Shortz
Word Ways, February 1997 Michael Donner's fine recent book on palindromes, I Love Me, Vol. I, got me thinking about word-unit palindromes and the paucity of examples cited in the standard collections. Besides the classic "All for one and one for all," the cry of the Three Musketeers, the following specimens are among the few that are generally cited in illustrating the genre: King, are you glad you are king? So patient a doctor to doctor a patient so! Girl, bathing on Bikini, eyeing boy, finds boy eyeing bikini on bathing-girl. You can cage a swallow, can't you, but you can't swallow a cage, can you? To reverse this sad situation, I recently ran a creative competition for word palindromes in my weekly puzzle segment on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday. Several thousand creative entries were received. These were judged on originality, cleverness, and naturalness of syntax. I looked particularly for examples that used the repeated words in different ways in the first and second halves. The quality of the results greatly exceeded my expectations. In fact, some of the submissions might well become new classics. First the runners-up: Fall leaves after leaves fall.
