Israel was uprooted from its national homeland and dispersed to the far-flung distant corners of the entire world in 70AD, and the subsequent Bar Kochba rebellion in 135AD. The Roman conquest of Israel marked the end of the historic second possession of the Promised Land by the Jewish people. From that time until May 14, 1948 the Jewish people never enjoyed the beneficence of having a homeland. In fact Rome changed the name of ancient Israel to Palestine in an effort to erase the name of Israel from world memory. The Romans renamed the land “Palestine”, a Greek term derived from the ancient Philistines. The name “Palaistina” actually means, “the land of the Philistines. And so it is that the association of the word Palestine came to be connected to the Promised Land. But although Rome attempted to eradicate the name of Israel from human memory, God had promised to regather his chosen people back unto their homeland, and the 20th century has witnessed that return. Throughout the long and arduous Diaspora, the Jewish people never stopped dreaming and praying for their restoration into their lost promised land. Eretz Israel ( the land of Israel ) remained a constant theme in the Jewish psyche, regardless of where the Jewish people have existed in the world. “Next year in Jerusalem” was the battle-cry within the soul of world Jewry for two thousand years of exile!
The Balfour Declaration became the Mandate of Great Britain’s Partitioning Plan for the Middle East land that had been defined as Palestine. The Paris Peace Conference of 1919 which ended with the signing of the “Versailles Treaty” and concluded the facilitation of victory in World War I assigned and empowered Great Britain to oversee the Middle East Palestinian Partition. Great Britain had promised to reward its Jewish allies with the implementation of the Balfour Declaration.

The Executive Director Mr. Imad Atrash was elected as a Birdlife International Global Council member at the Council Meeting at Durban /South Africa last March/2004 for the coming 5 years.
    Background
Palestine Wildlife Society (PWLS) was founded in 1999 in Biet Sahour- Bethlehem District by 13 trained and experienced environmentalists from across Palestine. PWLS's scope of work covers the West Bank and Gaza with a multidimensional mission aiming at the conservation and enhancement of the biodiversity and wildlife in Palestine; Moreover, Palestine is known for its location between the three main continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, where there had been estimated around 520 species of Birds and 2700 species of Plants occurring in this area, hence it considered as a major and important grassroots for Migratory birds like Storks, Pelicans and raptors (Such as Lesser Kestrel, Honey Buzzard, Lesser Spotted Eagle, and Egyptian Vulture) that use the Jordan Valley- Jericho; Jerusalem Mountains routes. It also corresponds with the criteria of Important Birds Areas (IBA's) in Palestine in which Jericho has a great importance as one of the major pathways during migration times as well as an important spot for resident and breeding birds. Also these areas are occupied with a relatively high number of mammalian species who are facing the threats of becoming endangered due to the excessive uncontrolled and unregulated hunting activities within different sites

Comic journalist Joe Sacco recalls his pilgrimage to the Promised Land by J. Caleb Mozzocco A decade ago, Joe Sacco visited the occupied territories in Israel, bringing with him a notebook, a camera and a desire to hear as many stories of Palestinian suffering as he could fit into a two-month trip. Sacco wasn’t an emotional masochist, he was a journalist, and he was researching what would eventually become Palestine , his landmark work of comics journalism. Fantagraphics recently re-released the nine-issue comic book series as a single, 285-page volume. At the time of Sacco’s visit, the first intifada was winding down and a peace process was beginning. Now, a second intifada rages on and America has withdrawn from President Bill Clinton’s attempts at brokering a peace deal. If the day-to-day lives of Palestinians have changed in the past 10 years, they have changed for the worse, Sacco believes. The comics creator—who has since received acclaim for his graphic novel treatment of the Bosnian War, Safe Area Gorazde— has returned to Palestine twice since “It’s gotten worse, especially the last few weeks,” Sacco said in a recent phone interview from New York City. “World opinion seems to be behind Israel more now. For a while it seemed people were upset with the Israelis, but now it’s seen as a matter of course, that if Israel is attacked they’re going to respond militarily. And Islamic groups among the Palestinians have increased attacks on Israelis.”

Customary media depictions of an average suicide bomber driven to self-destruction by despair fail to convince Palestinians. All Palestinians living under occupation, they say, are desperate.
Izz al-Din al-Masri, 23, was considered to be an ordinary fellow, until he went to Jerusalem on August 9, 2001 and blew himself up inside a pizzeria, killing 15 Israelis and injuring scores of others. The montage photo produced for his martyr poster shows him in his early twenties, a bit somber, wearing wireless glasses and a neatly trimmed beard.
"He was a completely average young man," his father insisted. "He worked at my restaurant, was religiously

    Introduction
    Ancient times
Introduction The struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians is one of the most enduring and explosive of all the world's conflicts. It has its roots in the historic claim to the land which lies between the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan river. For the Palestinians the last 100 years have brought colonisation, expulsion and military occupation, followed by a long and difficult search for self-determination and for coexistence with the nation they hold responsible for their suffering and loss. For the Jewish people of Israel, the return to the land of their forefathers after centuries of persecution around the world has not brought peace or security. They have faced many crises as their neighbours have sought to wipe their country off the map. BBC News Online highlights some of the key dates of recent Middle East history and looks back at the origins and development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Back to Top News Sources Privacy
