Use these links to navigate within this section Section A - Israel and Palestine Section B - Iraq and Other Middle East Issues This page was last updated on: Wednesday, 26 May 2004 Palestine and Israel - Peoples and States Ami Isseroff's excellent Mid-East Web site has an excellent series of pages providing a potted history of the land variously known as Israel or Palestine beginning with prehistoric times and ending in 2000 (Christian Era). Wisely, he introduces his "Brief History" with these cautionary words: "History, and different perceptions of history, are perhaps the most important factors in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Accounts of history, interpreting history in different ways, are used to justify claims and to negate claims, to vilify the enemy and to glorify "our own" side. Dozens of accounts have been written. Most of the accounts on the Web are intended to convince rather than to inform. This very brief account is intended as a balanced overview and introduction to Palestinian and Israeli history, and the history of the conflict. It is unlikely that anyone has written or will write an "objective" and definitive summary that would be accepted by everyone, but it is hoped that this document will provide a fair introduction. It would be wrong to try to use this history to determine "who is right," though many "histories" have certainly been written by partisans of either side, with precisely that purpose in mind. Those who are interested in advocacy, in collecting "points" for their side, cannot find the truth except by accident. If they find it, and it is inconvenient, they will bury it again."

If you care about truth, and not just what you've been told all your life, then you may come to believe, as we have, that one of the greatest injustices the world has ever known has been done to the Palestinian people. Objections to Israel's policies do not reflect anti-Jewish beliefs. Palestine is simply a matter of freedom lost and justice denied. We are American Christians who grew up believing that all Americans care about such things. The objectives of our web site are to share information, lead you to organizations you can join or support, and give you opportunities to get acquainted with ordinary Palestinian people. Opinions expressed herein, if not specifically attributed to others, are entirely ours, based on our personal experiences, observations and research. Funding for our website is entirely personal. We have no connection to any organizations. We condemn the killing of all civilians .We condemn suicide bombings by Palestinian militants. We condemn bullying tactics, house demolitions, and random shootings of Palestinians by Israeli soldiers and militant settlers.

The history of the State of Israel
The history of the state of Israel, from 1517 to the present.
Between 1517 and 1917, the Ottoman Empire of Turkey controlled the areas of Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. Supporting Germany during the First World War, the Turks were defeated and in 1916, the southern portion of control was mandated to Britain and France - Lebanon and Syria going to France, with Palestine (the areas known today as Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank) controlled by the British. Jews had begun mass immigration to Palestine during the 1880s and slowly started changing the very landscape from malarial swamps and dry desserts to farmable land. This also attracted a large number of Arab immigrants who were looking for employment and better living conditions. In 1923 Palestine was divided into two areas by the British 25% of the land (west of the Jordan River) was to be the Jewish homeland and administratively run by the Palestinian Jews. The remaining 75%, called Trans-Jordan would be the Arab-Palestinian homeland. bodyOffer(31465) Arab Palestinians began a systematic effort to drive out the Jews from the area west of the Jordan River with continuous attacks on Jewish settlements. Most widely known was the 1936-39 Arab Revolt, where attacks on Jews continued mercilessly. The British, who once protected the Jews and Arabs from each other, soon began ignoring the situation after many of their own died getting in between Arabs and Jews. The Jews began pouring more and more resources into their own defensive force called the Hagana, which eventually became the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

All texts included in this archive are written by resolute opponents of all forms of fascism and racism, including anti-semitism (the only exception consists of a small number of documents of the Zionist movement). We also reject all forms of Holocaust Revisionism, which is really an attempt, sometimes poorly disguised, to make anti-semitism palatable by masking it as anti-Zionism. We have endeavoured to ensure that all links are free from anti-semitism, which is gladly confused with anti-Zionism by Zionists and anti-semites alike. Palestine in History Excerpted from website at www.palestine-un.org the Philistines more difficult. The Philistines had established an independent state on the southern coast of Palestine and controlled the Canaanite town of Jerusalem. The Philistines were superior in military organization to the Israelites severely defeated them about 1050 BCE. The Arab conquest began 1300 years of Muslim presence in what then became known as Filastin. Palestine was holy to Muslims because the Prophet Muhammad had designated Jerusalem as the first qibla (the direction Muslims face when praying) and because he was believed to have ascended on a night journey to heaven from the Old City of Jerusalem, the site upon which the Dome of the Rock was later built. Jerusalem became the third holiest city of Islam. The Muslim rulers did not force their religion on the Palestinians, and more than a century passed before the majority converted to Islam. The remaining Christians and Jews (Hebrews) were allowed autonomous control in their communities and guaranteed security and freedom of worship. Most Palestinians adopted the Arabic language and Islamic culture. Palestine remained as a province of the two major Arab-Islamic empires: the Omayyad (based in Damascus) up to 750 ACE and the Abbasid (based in Baghdad) up to 1258. During the Abbasid period, Palestine was conquered and ruled for nearly two centuries by European Crusaders. In 1187, Saladin definitively defeated the Crusaders in the battle of Hittin in Palestine. This heralded the end of Crusader rule and the return of Palestine to Islamic and Arab rule. In the wake of the end of the Abbasid empire, Palestine came under the rule of the Mamelukes of Egypt. Like the rest of the empire, Palestine under the Mamelukes gradually stagnated and declined. The Ottoman Turks of Asia Minor defeated the Mamelukes in 1516, established their control of the region and ruled Palestine until the winter of 1917-1918.

Prehistory Jews Torah, The Greeks under Alexander the Great conquered the Persians and controlled Palestine and Judah in 331 BC. Alexander's successors, the Ptolemies of Egypt and the Seleucids of Syria, continued to rule the country and tried to impose Hellenistic culture and religion (multiple gods) on the Judeans. However, the Jews regained control with the Maccabaean Revolt (141 BC) and set up an independent state again. Then, in 63 BC the Romans conquered the region. After the 132 AD rebellion, Jerusalem was flattened, and the Romans built a new city. The Jews left Palestine, becoming known as the Diaspora ("scattered"), but they have remained bonded with their religion based on the Torah and the laws of the Talmud , written in the first century AD. They believe that God will return to resurrect the faithful on Judgment Day, appearing first at Jerusalem. Christians Then in 313, the Romans made an about-face when Roman emperor Constantine I legalized Christianity and became a Christian himself. In 324 AD the Roman empire was split in half and Constantine moved to Byzantium (now Istanbul) to rule the eastern half. He renamed Byzantium to Constantinople in the process. The Byzantine Empire that Constantine founded soon grew to outstrip the empire of fading Rome. Muslims The Muslim’s were a relatively new group of Arabs bonded by a common belief in the teachings of Mohammed (Islam, or "Surrender to God’s Will"). Mohammed was born in Mecca in 570 AD and began to receive messages from God (Allah) through the angel Gabriel. By 630 AD Mohammed had built a massive following and had conquered Mecca and all of Arabia, expanding westward to Palestine by 638 AD. Mohammed’s teachings and prophecies were gathered into a book called the

The History and Meaning Of "Palestine" and "Palestinians"
"There is no such thing as a Palestinian Arab nation . . . Palestine is a name the Romans gave to Eretz Yisrael with the express purpose of infuriating the Jews . . . . Why should we use the spiteful name meant to humiliate us? "The British chose to call the land they mandated Palestine, and the Arabs picked it up as their nation's supposed ancient name, though they couldn't even pronounce it correctly and turned it into Falastin a fictional entity." Golda Meir quoted by Sarah Honig,
Jerusalem Post, 25 November 1995 Palestine has never existed . . . as an autonomous entity.
There is no language known as Palestinian. There is no distinct Palestinian culture. There has never been a land known as Palestine
governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians
(another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc. Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth of one percent of the landmass. But that's too much for the Arabs. They want it all. And that is ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today . . . No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make, it will never be enough
