About the Project
Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is located in Colorado, USA, west of Colorado Springs. The fossils from this area consist mostly of plants and insects, and a few vertebrates, from lake deposits of the Florissant Formation. This formation is dated at 34.07 million years old, and it represents the latest Eocene Epoch of earth history.
Another facet of the web leads educators and students to curricula designed for high school and college students. These educational applications use the database to draw random fossil samples that the students can identify and use to develop hypotheses about paleoclimate. For the layperson, the web site provides a gallery of some of Florissant's most impressive fossils along with a description of the significance of the Florissant fossil beds. Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Quaternary Vertebrate Paleontology - is the study of fossil organisms that lived during the last 1.8 million years, and it is an ongoing project at this Museum focusing on the Alberta Province with many puzzles still in place. (For instance, it is puzzling that fossils of certain animal species are absent from Alberta such as the stag-elk and giant beaver despite their presence to the south, in the lower 48 United States, and to the north, in Beringia -those parts of Yukon Territory and Alaska that remained unglaciated during the Wisconsinan glaciation. GENERAL LINKS Dinosauricon . T. Mike Keesey. A great dinosaur web site with tons of technical and not so technical information. You'll find a genus list with information on each genus, often illustrated. There is a phylogeny of the dinosaurs, the biggest and smallest, anatomy, ages of the Mesozoic, and a very extensive gallery of dinosaur pictures and movies. Highly recommended. Kids should go directly to the art gallery because the rest is a bit technical for the younger reader. Dinosauria On-Line . Dinosauria On-Line has a large collection of paintings and photographs of dinosaurs. It also has a glossary of dinosaur terminology, a generic list, a map of the earth during the period of the dinosaurs, a dinosaur classification, and a number of articles on specific (mostly technical) topics. A great site for the dinosaur enthusiast.

The knowledge we take for granted today was slow in coming, and along the way, scientists and scholars had some weird ideas. This Web site shows some of their mistakes, provides a timeline of events, gives biographies of a few of the people who have gotten us where we are today, and lists resources you can use to learn more.
A Little History
The fascination with oddities led to a better understanding of the history of life. Starting in the late 18th century, Georges Buffon and later Georges Cuvier suggested that the earth was much older than anyone had previously imagined. By studying the fossil record, 19th-century geologist John Phillips divided the ages of the earth into three eras: Paleozoic (old life), Mesozoic (middle life) and Cenozoic (new life). Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species describing natural selection as a driving force in evolution. William Buckland and Gideon Mantell published the first descriptions of a certain group fossil reptiles, later to be given the much more popular name of "dinosaurs" by Sir Richard Owen.

G231: Paleontology on the Web The World Wide Web, or simply the "Web", is an amazing source of prolific information in our modern, high-tech world. How might we use the Web in our study of paleontology? Evaluating Web resources: Before we start assembling information from the Web, consider the following issues: How reliable and complete is the information we obtain from any particular site? How can we evaluate the quality of information from any particular site? Who, or what organization, is supplying the information? Does the information provide citations and references, or is it just out there? Search Engines: What are the best search engines to use? How do you conduct an efficient search? (What happens if you just enter "paleontology" into a search engine?)
