Palaeontology Palaeontology is the study of fossils; these are preserved remains of ancient life forms and are most commonly found in the form of petrified bones, shells, coprolites, wood, seeds, insects, footprints impressions and leaves (impressions). The NMK Palaeontology Division has one of the most outstanding fossil collection worldwide, and the mammalian fossil collection particularly the hominids draws researchers from all over the world. Being the custodians of Kenya's unparalled and priceless fossil heritage, the Division has continued to protect and conserve this irreplaceable heritage. Kenya is well known for the many fossil sites found largely within the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria region. Research in the Palaeontology Division focuses on these sites with a view to reconstruct the evolutionary history of our own and other animal species. Past climatic and environmental changes led to the evolution of the many different plant and animal species found in East Africa today. Numerous important fossil specimens collected over the years comprise an impressive national collection. The Division is responsible for the documentation of these fossils, the majority of which range in age between twenty and one million years before present. Scientists from all over the world come to study them and learn about the evolutionary history of our own species

Paleontology in Museums and Institutes in the 21st Century Douglas H. Erwin and Willi Ziegler
Origin and Historic Development In the 18th and early 19th century the public perception of earth history and biology was based on the typological-registration inventory of natural history objects then currently in vogue. These objects became known and were collected during the geographical exploration of the world during the times of Columbus, Vasco da Gama, James Cook, and others. In medieval times, natural objects were already being kept in galleries or collections that did not distinguish between natural objects and artifacts. During Renaissance time, these accumulated objects were kept in the so-called "art and wonder cabinets" and they served the continuing acquisition of knowledge in regard to the micro- and macro cosmos. Some objects from these collections were compared with their likes in a kind of playful association, and thus knowledge was gained about those deviating from the normal. It follows that each museum and each collection developed its own organization and depending on its individual history and on the time and circumstances of its founding (Ziegler, 1995, p.50). Thus, museums and collections are conditioned in their aims, their appearance; their sense of priority, their respective histories and by the local factors of the country in which they were established (Hudson, 1987, p. 83). These facts have to be taken into account in judging the future work of natural history museums, and it is hoped that they will resist any attempts at concentration, fusion or leveling.

    Reports and Recommendations
Paleontology in Museums and Institutes in the 21st Century Douglas H. Erwin (Smithsonian Institution, Department of Paleobiology, MRC 121, Washington DC 20560-0001, USA). INTRODUCTION
Our discussions began with the recognition that the fundamental basis of all paleontological research is specimens and collections. These specimens may exist in the field, but much of our knowledge of them is with reference to material held in museum collections. Since the collections of individual researchers are ephemeral, museums and research institutions serve as the ultimate repositories for our documentation of the history of life, in addition to their role documenting past discoveries and as reference for future studies.
The second key theme is that museums provide the intersection between the general public and fossils. The contact with actual specimens provides immediacy to the message of museums that is not possible in any other medium. Consequently, museums play a primary role in conveying the excitement of the history of life, methods of scientific inquiry, and the vital importance of collections to the public.

Ghost Ranch is known worldwide among paleontologists as the location of the articulated fossils of the Coelophysis, as well as being one of the richest quarries of the Triassic era which began 220 million years ago. The museum is named for amateur paleontologist Ruth Hall, wife of first resident Ghost Ranch Director, Jim Hall. Displays range from a complete Coelophysis cast skeleton to remains from great alligator-like reptiles.

The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology is the only paleontology museum in the world located on a high school campus. It is one of three nonprofit institutions that comprise The Webb Schools , the others being Vivian Webb School for girls and Webb School of California for boys.
The mission of the museum is to serve Southern California as an educational resource, to act as a center of paleontological research for the international scientific community, and to provide a unique curricular ingredient to The Webb Schools.
The museum is named after Dr. Raymond M. Alf, a math and science teacher who first took Webb students to the desert in search of fossils in the early 1930's. In 1937, Alf and student Bill Webb found the skull of a new species of fossil pig, or peccary. The discovery of "The Peccary" sparked in Alf a life-long commitment to the study of paleontology and led to the founding of the museum that bears his name. After the discovery of "The Peccary," student fossil collecting trips were known as peccary trips. Over 95% of the 70,000 fossils in the museum's collection were unearthed by students and staff on peccary trips.
In 1998, the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology gained national accreditation from the American Association of Museums, the highest honor a museum can achieve. Thus, the Alf Museum is now the only accredited museum located on a high school campus in the United States.

The study of ancient life, on the basis of fossil remains
"To trace that life in its manifold changes through past ages to the present is a ... difficult task, but one from which modern science does not shrink. In this wide field, every earnest effort will meet with some degree of success; every year will add new and important facts; and every generation will bring to light some law, in accordance with which ancient life has been changed into life as we see it around us to-day."
O.C. Marsh,
Vice Presidential Address, AAAS, August 30, 1877 Paleontology (or Palaeontology) is the study of prehistoric animal and plant life through the analysis of fossil remains. The study of these remains enables scientists to trace the evolutionary history of extinct as well as living organisms. Paleontologists also play a major role in unraveling the mysteries of the earth's rock strata (layers). Using detailed information on how fossils are distributed in these layers of rock, paleontologists help prepare accurate geologic maps, which are essential in the search for oil, water, and minerals The importance of geology in paleontology cannot be overemphasized. We deal with the tiny fraction of organisms which happened to be buried in deposits of an appropriate sediment, which were subsequently preserved, which were subsequently lithified, which were not subsequently metamorphosed or eroded or buried outside of our reach, which were later exposed, and which were discovered and identified.
