Paleontology Department
Cretaceous Period Research
The demise of the dinosaurs, along with the changes in local paleoenvironments, are just a couple of areas in which the Paleontology Department has been conducting research over the past decade. This research is conducted in the intermittent barren landscapes of the Little Missouri Badlands in southwest North Dakota. These badlands represent the latest Cretaceous Period, which was home to the dinosaurs, giant marina reptiles, and extinct exotic plants. Research teams associated with the museum have been working in these ancient environments collecting fossils of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants to try to reassemble what was present 65 million years ago. As a result of these studies, clues are emerging in regards to how the plants and animals are interacting, how abundant they were and what was present at the time of the meteor impact. The fossil remains of these plants and animals are brought back to our museum where they are prepared, curated and studied. Displays depicting the results of our findings are presented to the general public in our museum. Research results have been published by the museum staff, and with collaborators in leading scientific journals. Collecting a microsite from the surface Removing soil from on top of a dinosaur site The museum also studies, collects and curates fossils from all of the different aged outcrops present in the region. These include vertebrates, invertebrates and plants from 73 million year old marine deposits up to the latest deposits of the area, which are 28 million years old. Some of the animals that have been found are mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, dinosaurs, and early mammals that include camels, rhinoceroses, horses and giant pigs.

Carlson (Department of Geology, University of California, Davis, CA 95616 USA) David MacKinnon (Department of Geology, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND) INTRODUCTION We have identified a number of issues facing academic paleontologists now and into the next century. The list is certainly not exhaustive. Many of these items are interrelated, and it is, therefore, often difficult or impossible to provide a simple solution for any single issue. In some instances, there may be more questions presented than answers offered. We hope these paragraphs will at least provide a starting point for further discussion. Critical Issues. We divide the issues, perhaps artificially, as follows.
  • Those issues that involve the selling of paleontology to various constituencies.

http://www.mines.edu/Outreach/Cont_Ed/desp4.html
The "Paleontology and Dinosaurs" module for grades 7-10 teaches students basic paleontological concepts through the study of dinosaurs. The hands-on student activities use real data collected in the field, model dinosaurs, and fossils to allow students to look at the Earth's past by using a problem-solving approach. In addition, the module integrates science, mathematics, and geography into a high-interest topic. Through the teacher resource kit, which includes dinosaur models, fossils, slides, owl pellets, and the teacher/student notebook, students actively learn how fossil evidence gives paleontologists clues to the past history of Earth. Teachers are able to obtain the teacher resource kit and notebook for the "Paleontology and Dinosaurs" module by attending a teacher training workshop. The workshop provides teachers an opportunity to actively participate in the module activities while attending special lectures by paleontologists and geologists. A field trip to a site of related interest shows teachers local fossil resources in their community. The workshop provides the necessary scientific background for the teachers to successfully teach the module to their students.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES J. Wagner, et al. - Clemson University, Department of Geological Sciences There are many standards-based, proven curriculum programs currently in existence which lend themselves very well to professional development opportunities that will not only give teachers experience working with earth science content, but will also provide exemplary materials for these teachers to take into their classrooms and share with their students. Field based professional development activities are also encouraged because they provide teachers with first hand knowledge and hands-on experience with geological processes in action. Hands-on experience with rocks and minerals, fossils, soil samples, weather instruments, telescopes, topographic and weather maps, satellite images and aerial photographs, seismographs, and environmental problems will also aid the teacher in providing more inquiry-based lessons for their students. From the bone beds and back MSU paleontologists unearth dinosaurs
By Evelyn Boswell
Dinosaur fossils continue to lumber out of their Eastern Montana graves, whispering secrets to Montana State University scientists and others who are trying to uncover the mysteries of their lives and deaths.
Dave Varricchio, who fills a new position as assistant professor in earth sciences at MSU, examines a dinosaur bone bed in Inner Mongolia. Note the dinosaur footprint near his hand. (Mike Hettwer photo) Paleontologists have discovered 31 dinosaur skeletons in four years in the Hell Creek Formation around Jordan and the Fort Peck Reservoir alone, says Jack Horner, paleontologist at MSU's Museum of the Rockies. Not all were removed from the ground-or are expected to be. Of those skeletons, 10 were Triceratops, eight were Tyrannosaurus rex, five were duck-billed dinosaurs, and the rest were other smaller dinosaurs. They were all located on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service property.
"One of the coolest things to come out of all of this is that we have discovered that T. rex is a common dinosaur."
Jack Horner. (Jeannine Lintner photo)

    Exploring Careers: Paleontologists (Grades 5-12)
October 6 Graphic: Marcela Esteves When most of us think about paleontologists, we picture a crew of dusty folks digging up dinosaurs. Paleontologists, however, do more than just study dinosaur bones. Through the fossil record, paleontologists also study bacteria, plants, and other animals to reconstruct the history of life on Earth. Their data provide valuable insights into the evolutionary relationships of organisms. Some paleontologists examine the geologic record to study trends in past climates and environments, and can help predict the consequences of environmental change, such as global warming. Still other paleontologists work in the petroleum industry, where they identify sources of fossil fuel. In general, paleontology is the study of the geologic past and of ancient life-forms.
    Connections
Paleontology requires knowledge in biology, chemistry, and geology. Paleontologists who study early humans must also have an understanding of anthropology and sociology. The paleontologist's day-to-day work, like that of most scientists, requires a combination of creativity, teamwork, and meticulous measurement and record keeping.

Published by Cloud 9 Interactive Wanna Be A Dino Finder CD-ROM offers an interactive multimedia adventure into the prehistoric age of dinosaurs. Price: $34.95. ISBN: 1-8894-9800-9. WIN/MAC CD-ROM.
    Content
Wanna-Be A Dino Finder provides an interactive, fun-filled opportunity for children to learn more about paleontology, the science of locating and excavating dinosaurs. Children will be captivated with the magnificent animation and the facinating dinosaurs. With the help of Katie the Cameleon, Rufus the Dog, and Addie the Kangaroo, the "Wanna-Be Three," children will be eager to assist Dr. Rock Hound who is desperately in need of prehistoric creatures for an exhibit. The game begins with Dr. Rock Hound explaining what creature he needs, then the mission starts from Dr. Rock Hound's Tent. Within the tent itself, a player can explore many exciting and informational options. A timeline chart displays the time periods of the earth, and it can be clicked on to reveal pre-historic animals of each era. A box of bones can be clicked for various dinosaur facts. Certificates on the wall show a player's progress from ditch digger to Four-Star Fossil Finder and discuss how to become a paleontologist. A picture frame can be touched for an explanation of prominent paleontologists of the past or present. Finally, a wall map of the continents displays the six dig sites - Canada, USA, Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. Clicking on a location transports the player and tent to the dig site so excavation can begin!
