Paleontology is the study of the developing history of life on earth, of ancient plants and animals based on the fossil record , evidence of their existence preserved in rocks . This includes the study of body fossils , tracks, burrows, cast off parts, fossilized feces coprolites "), and chemical residues. Overview
Modern paleontology sets ancient life in its contexts, by studying how long-term physical changes of global geography (" paleogeography ") and climate (" paleoclimate ") have affected the evolution of life, how ecosystems have responded to these changes and have changed the planetary environment in turn, and how these mutual responses have affected today's patterns of biodiversity . So paleontology overlaps with geology , the study of rocks and rock formations, and with botany biology zoology , and ecology , fields concerned with living creatures and how they interact. Palynology is the study of pollens, whether modern or geological.

The knowledge we take for granted today was slow in coming, and along the way, scientists and scholars had some weird ideas. This Web site shows some of their mistakes, provides a timeline of events, gives biographies of a few of the people who have gotten us where we are today, and lists resources you can use to learn more.
A Little History
The fascination with oddities led to a better understanding of the history of life. Starting in the late 18th century, Georges Buffon and later Georges Cuvier suggested that the earth was much older than anyone had previously imagined. By studying the fossil record, 19th-century geologist John Phillips divided the ages of the earth into three eras: Paleozoic (old life), Mesozoic (middle life) and Cenozoic (new life). Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species describing natural selection as a driving force in evolution. William Buckland and Gideon Mantell published the first descriptions of a certain group fossil reptiles, later to be given the much more popular name of "dinosaurs" by Sir Richard Owen.

Biographical Sketch During the 1930s, George Gaylord Simpson of the American Museum of Natural History exerted a major influence on bringing paleontology into the modern Synthetic Theory of evolution, which had already become the theoretical umbrella for genetics, zoology, taxonomy and studies of plant and animal populations. While most paleontologists had become accustomed to think of a series of types "leading to" the modern forms, Simpson's attempt to approach the fossil record as a sampling of ancient breeding populations led to a revitalization of the field. Simpson had joined the American Museum of Natural History as assistant curator of vertebrate paleontology in 1927, at the invitation of director Henry Fairfield Osborn , who had a knack for picking future "stars" in natural history. Simpson's productive field trips to the American West and to Patagonia added much new information on the evolution and distribution of extinct mammals of the New World. Traditionally, fossil-hunters had sought magnificent specimens for their museums and exhibited them as a series of individuals, like O. C. Marsh's famous linear "progression" of individual horse skeletons. Simpson made the evolution of the horse one of his specialties; his detailed, quantitative studies, published in his classic book Horses (1951), exploded Marsh's "single-line" evolution of the horse from a fox-sized hoofless ancestor.

Many people think paleontology is the study of fossils. In fact, paleontology is much more . Paleontology incorporates many different kinds of data from different fields. We provide three different areas in which to start your exploration of paleontology:
  • Phylogeny
  • Geologic Time
  • Evolutionary Thought These exhibits are extensive, complex and packed with information. To aid you in your virtual investigations, we have developed a navigation guide to explain the organizational structures and navigation tools that can help you make the most of the exhibits. You may also wish to look through our list of Special Exhibits for in-depth and interesting pages of note.

    Abstract
This page provides a high level review of some of the main threads of the evolution of plants and animals, from the origin of life to the present day. Keywords: evolution, metazoan radiation, Ediacaran, Cambrian, Embryophyta, tetrapods, Permian, extinction, dinosaurs, angiosperms, mammals, humans Acknowledgement: This page owes both its inspiration and title to the excellent book edited by J.W. Schopf.
    Introduction
Plants had existed since the earliest fossils were formed, but did not achieve a high degree of organisation until vascular plants evolved on land, perhaps around the Silurian.
