Field of Study:
Vertebrate Paleontology Short Biography:
Dr. Rowe's primary research focuses on the evolution and development of the vertebrate skeleton. In this work, Dr. Rowe uses phylogenetic systematics to study the evolution of skeletal form as well as the evolution of skeletal development in the ontogeny of living species. This work is directed mostly at the early history of mammals and their extinct relatives among Synapsida, and on the history of birds and their extinct relatives among Dinosauria, and on other amniotes. An important tool for this research is high-resolution X-ray computed tomography, which has become a secondary research focus. This breakthrough technology permits the non-destructive inspection of internal structure in even the smallest and most delicate of vertebrate specimens. In collaborative research with scientist from many countries, Dr. Rowe is scanning and studying the anatomy of

Caribbean Lizards Evolve Independently
From Allen Salzberg, June 20, 1998.
As reprinted in the Cold Blooded News , Vol.25, No.10, October 1998. Wednesday, April 1, 1998
A discovery that remarkably similar lizard communities have evolved independently on different islands in the Caribbean is shedding new light on the science of evolution and genetics. A team of scientists, led by Jonathan B. Losos, Ph.D., associate professor of biology in Arts and Sciences at Washington University, examined DNA of 56 species found throughout large Caribbean Islands of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica and the Greater Antilles to test theories on evolutionary history of the Anoles. The study reveals a perfect example of an evolutionary concept known as "convergence", where species evolve in similar adaptations to the environment despite living geographically apart. Although evolutionary convergence has been taken as evidence for the working of natural selection, the study is unique in showing that entire communities have converged. This goes against the grain of most evolutionary thought which stresses that random events a meteorite striking Earth or a hurricane wiping out island species play unpredictable roles that send evolutionary diversification down different pathways.

abyssal plain : Large area of extremely flat ocean floor lying near a continent and generally over 4 km in depth. Acanthodians : Now extinct, earliest group of fish with jaws, ranging from the Silurian to the Permian. Acritarchs : Organic-walled microfossils common throughout the Proterozoic and early Paleozoic adaptation : Any heritable characteristic of an organism that improves its ability to survive and reproduce in its environment. Also used to describe the process of genetic change within a population, as influenced by natural selection. Alternatively, some heritable feature of an individual's phenotype that improves its chances of survival and reproduction in the existing environment.
adaptive radiation (also "radiation", for short): The diversification, over evolutionary time, of a species or group of species into several different species or subspecies that are typically adapted to different ecological niches (for example, Darwin's finches). The term can also be applied to larger groups of organisms, as in "the adaptive radiation of mammals." For example, trilobites underwent a massive radiation during the Cambrian, and insects during the Cretaceous.

Customer Reviews This is an excellent overview of the evolutionary history and osteology of the vertebrate taxa, but it is dated, particularly as regards the Archosauromorpha. It's opposition to cladistic practices for formulating phylogenies, is also noteworthy. Thus, you will find that numerous bankrupt taxa and no longer accurate classification schemes still, unfortunately, present themselves in this volume. This book was my textbook for Vertebrate Paleontology and Evolution at the University of Rochester back in 1992. The book is very daunting to look at if you just flip through it. However, it does a nice job of introducing concepts and terms to the reader. Its organization is straightforward, starting with the simplest vertebrates and eventually finishing with mammals. Most groups are covered well, considering that the author's cover every group of vertebrates known. The biggest problem I had with the book was the section on dinosaurs, the biggest reason why I took the class. The information on them was limited to a few pages and much of the information was out-dated even in 1992. However, if you are looking for a good book on vertebrates, this is a must have. Just realize that some of the information may not reflect our current understanding since the book is over 10 years old and many new finds have come to light, new ideas have been introduced, and old ideas reexamined.

The word evolution is used by paleontologists and biologists to describe threerelated but distinct ideas 1. The observation that life has a history.
http://people.hofstra.edu/faculty/J_B_Bennington/137notes/evolution.html
Paleontology Fossil Record of Evolution Evolution The word "evolution" is used by paleontologists and biologists to describe three related but distinct ideas: 1. The observation that life has a history. In other words, the deduction made from our studies of the fossil record that the world has been populated by a vast sequence of organisms that are no longer living. Most of the evidence in support of this observation comes from the fossil record. 2. The inference that the vast sequence of extinct fossils and living organisms is interrelated, i.e. that there is a connectedness to the living world such that all organisms are united by common descent. Evidence in support of this inference comes from comparisons of both living and fossil organisms and from the temporal sequence of species found in the fossil record. 3. The theory that purports to explain how new species are produced from previously existing species ( speciation ). Currently, the most widely accepted "theory of evolution" is a hybrid of modern genetics combined with Charles Darwin’s original "theory of descent with modification through the agency of natural selection" called the modern synthesis The details of how evolution works to produce new species is still being actively researched and debated, both by biologists and paleontologists. Because of the nature of the fossil record - in particular its relative lack of resolution at short time scales (ecological time) - most attempts to study generation by generation changes in species are carried out by biologists.
