http://www.olekoi.com/people.htm
Alii Alii Osu Belau News ... Site Map Palau's early history is still largely veiled in mystery. Why, how or when people arrived on our beautiful islands is unknown, but studies indicate today's Palauans are distant relatives of the Malays of Indonesia, Melanesians of New Guinea and Polynesians. As for the date of their arrivals, carbon dating of artifacts from the oldest known village sites on the Rock Islands and the spectacular terraces on Babeldaob place civilization here as early 1,000 BC. What is known, however, is that Palau once sustained a population much larger than even that of today. Palau's social organization is highly complex and competitive. The race for money, prestige and power, the main thrust of which used to be for political power within a clan or village, was the focus from which most events occurred, such as sports competitions and wars. Palauan villages were, and still are, organized around 10 clans reckoned matrilineally. A council of chiefs from the 10 ranking clans governed the village, and a parallel council of their female counterparts held a significant advisory role in the control and division of land and money. Men and women had strictly defined roles to play in the continuity of the village. The sea was the domain of men who braved its fury to harvest the fish necessary to sustain the village and wage battle. Inter-village wars were common, so men spent a lot of time in the men's meeting houses mastering techniques of canoe building and refining their skills with weapons. Women, on the other hand, held sway in the home. They cultivated vegetables and harvested shellfish and sea cucumbers from the shallow reefs.

SOLOMON ISLANDS (PINA)

In its report to be presented to parliament, the committee says circumstances for both countries have changed a lot since the signing of the MOU about six years a go and recommends asking Taipei to revisit the MOU for review and improvement to reflect changing circumstances and priorities.
The committee, chaired by East Malaita M-P Joses Sanga, states that for Solomon Islands, post conflict rehabilitation, economic reform and reconstruction are the priorities, and for Taiwan, the Committee says its freedom and recognition of its democratic development is important, therefore, the committee recommends revisiting and reviewing the MOU and incorporating new issues to reflect the changing situation would be justified.
A further recommendation is that both countries encourage trade and investment under the revised MOU, emphasizing participation of the Solomon Islands private sector.

Gilbert Demei, vice chairman of the Committee on Logistics and Planning and director of the Bureau of Lands and Surveys, said the committee wrote to Filipino Community president Boy Aguas, to ask their help in constructing some huts at the Asahi Baseball Field. A total of 25 bench huts will be constructed to provide the public, participants and guests of the festival a place to relax.
Sixteen of the 25 huts will be constructed by the Governors Association through their state representatives. Each state will donate one hut, Demei said.
He added the committee is requesting the Filipino community in Palau to construct the huts on two weekends starting June 12, on a voluntary basis.
Meanwhile, the Governors Association and state representatives will start building the bench huts on June 19, Demei said.

Yapese Culture
Yap is located in the Western Carolines, about Midway between Guam and Palau. Yap is one volcanic complex made up of four islands plus eleven inhabited outer islands and atolls. The total land area of Yap State is 46 sq. miles. The first round of negotiations between Congress of Micronesia and the U.S. were held in 1969 to discuss the future political status of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which later became the Federated States of Micronesia. The Compact of Free Association between the U.S. and the Federated States of Micronesia was signed in 1986. This contract outlined the security and economic agreements. In 1991, Micronesia was admitted as a member of the United Nations General Assembly. There are four traditional, distinct languages in Yap: Yapese, Ulitian, Woleaian, and Satawalese. Yapese is the language spoken on Yap proper. The other languages are spoken in the outer islands. Words in Japanese, Spanish, German, and English are also woven into the language. Generally, Yapese youths speak English as their second language. Most elders speak Japanese as their second language. English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia. Many Yapese still wear traditional attire of loincloths or "thus" for the men and "grass skirts" or lava lavas for the women. "Thus" are generally made of red, white, or blue cloth. The grass skirts worn by Yapese women are not made of grass but of shredded leaves of ti, banana, betelnut, fragrant ginger, fern, and other leaves. Today, the western culture has influenced the Yap dress code and many Yapese are seen wearing shorts and t-shirts with name brand logos such as Nike. The more traditional ways of dressing are reserved for dance.
