ASIANS OF UC IRVINE rawing primarily from nearby Asian population centers in affluent Orange and L.A. counties, UC Irvine's student body boasts over twice as many Asian as white students. A combined graduate and undergraduate student population of 17,165 makes UC Irvine the fourth largest of the 9-campus UC system after UCLA, UC Berkeley and UCSD, but its Asian population of about 9,600 (factoring in 1,999 racially undeclared students) puts it a close third to UCLA and UC Berkeley as a contender for Top Asian American University. The undergraduate portion of UCI's student population totals 14,197, of which 8,079 are declared Asians and 3,060 are declared Whites. 1,143 are undeclared. Allocating the undeclared proportionately among the declared groups adds 670 to the Asian population and 280 to the white population. That makes 61% of the undergraduate student body Asians, with Whites only 23% easily the smallest white percentage among the nation's top 25 universities . The Asian population divides among Chinese 32%, Coreans 18%, Filipino, 16%, Vietnamese 13%, Japanese 6%, with 15% comprising Indian, Pakistani and other Asian categories. UC Irvine is the only UC campus where Asians outnumber Whites even in the graduate division. The combined student population of 17,165 is 58% Asian and 28% White. Current admissions trends suggest the Asian percentage will continue rising to about 61% for the combined population before leveling off. Given the rate at which UC Irvine has been growing in the heart of Orange County's most affluent section, UCI may end up with the Top Asian American University title in 3-5 years.

UC DAVIS IS NO 4 AAU C Davis is the third largest of the elite 9-campus University of California system with a total enrollment of 24,866. Asian Americans are 37.1% of that number, making UCD the 4th ranked Asian American University after UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC Irvine. On March 26 we named UC San Diego in the Number 4 slot based on the fact that 37% of its undergraduate enrollment of 17,000 is Asian American. However, current figures show that UC Davis has a larger undergraduate enrollment of 19,343 with a slightly higher Asian American percentage. What's more, due to its large bio-sciences department and medical school, UC Davis's graduate and professional divisions have a larger Asian American percentage (about 35%) than does UC San Diego (about 29%). Therefore, UC San Diego should have been placed in the Number 5 position.

World Trade Center and Pentagon Attacks: The Anti-Asian American Backlash
Compiled by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund Partial list of reported incidents as of October 5, 2001. For more information or to report an incident, please call 212-760-9110 or 212-966-5932 or sling@aaldef.org or email legal@aaldef.org The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) sends our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Washington, and Pennsylvania. We condemn these acts of terrorist violence against innocent people. We also are concerned about reports of harassment, intimidation and violence against South Asian Americans, particularly Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sikhs, and other Indians in New York City. We call on all New Yorkers and all Americans to speak out against the backlash that has targeted law-abiding South Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim communities and individuals. The list below contains summary information about incidents of anti-Asian American violence, as reported to AALDEF staff, volunteers, and cooperating attorneys. It is current as of the afternoon of October 5, 2001. It reflects 78 incidents from 18 states and the District of Columbia, and includes 47 incidents from the New York/New Jersey area alone. Other agencies are also collecting anti-Asian American hate crime statistics, so this list should not be considered a complete catalogue of all anti-Asian American hate crimes since the September 11th bombings. Also, while some of the more serious incidents, such as the killings in Texas, Long Island, and Arizona, have been reported in the mainstream press, the list below includes reports of vandalism, assault, and other serious crimes that have not yet received widespread press attention.

MUSEUM SPOTLIGHT: The Hidden History of Asian American Activism in New York City Continued
A typical sweatshop in New York's garment district. Photo courtesy of Corky Lee In New York, the Asian American Movement can be traced, more or less, to a Madison Avenue Park bench, where in the fall of 1968 two women met for lunch. Kazu Iijima and Minn Matsuda, longtime friends and activists, wanted to start a Japanese American group for their college-age kids, but by the time they'd finished canvassing everyone they knew (and didn't know) in Asian New York, the two "crazy little old ladies"aeas Iijima laughingly puts it nowaehad come up with the first Movement organization, Asian Americans for Action. Triple A's first members included Yuri Kochiyama, the Harlem-based comrade of Malcolm X, as well as a contingent of second-and third-generation activists. "War brought us together," says Iijima. Indeed, opposition to the Vietnam War galvanized Asian Americans, who added a racial analysis to the antiwar movement, linking American military excursions in Asia to an imperial project driven by "gookism," just as the term gook itselfaea child of America's war in the Philippinesaelater migrated to Korea, then Vietnam, among other destinations. But just as feminists found themselves marginalized in New Left organizations, Asian activists were often shunted to the side of the antiwar movement. The result was to foster independent Asian American organization and to bring disparate Asian groups together.

If so, then you should check out Great ExpectAsians. A new company offering a line of greeting cards geared specifically for Asian Americans. "Mainstream greeting cards feature mostly Caucasians. There are greeting card lines for African Americans and the Latino community but nothing for us." exclaims Glenda Villajuan, founder and president of Great ExpectAsians. "Like a typical parent, I went crazy with the digital camera when our daughter was born last year. Next thing I know, I had over 3,000 pictures of her. So I started making calendars and greeting cards for our friends and relatives." she explained. It was soon after that when Glenda realized the potential for greeting cards. "I printed out a 'try-out' set using one of those online digital photo places and all our friends loved them!" Glenda then read everything she could about the greeting card industry and after six months of reasearch all that was needed was to finalize the name.

Columbia University's Institute for Research in African-American Studies hosts a groundbreaking conference that examines the cultural and political dynamic between African-Americans and Asian-Americans and Blacks and Asians worldwide. The Institute, led by historian and activist Manning Marable, and the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, led by Gary Y. Okihiro, historian and expert in Asian-American studies, hosts a gathering of leading scholars of ethnic studies and the humanities, social scientists, and artists for the wide-ranging discussion about the relationship between blacks, America's largest minority group, and Asian-Americans, the fastest growing ethnic minority. Viewed most often through the lens of the dominant culture, these two groups increasingly share an intercultural connection that is marked by both open conflict and cooperation.
"This conference explores the common differences or differences in common, the tensions between these two groups and opportunities for a common ground," said Marable. "A number of people working in research institutions are exploring the complexity and nuances of creating identity within cultures. Through their discussions with scholars and artists, the public discussion on race and identity will be enlivened," said Professor Sudhir Venkatesh, faculty member and researcher in ethnic studies who has organized the conference.
