"Asian Pacific American Heritage Month was enacted by Public Law 102-450 on October 23, 1992. The purpose of the law was to honor the achievements of Asian/Pacific Americans and to recognize their contributions to the United States. This recognition was the culmination of Jeanie Jew's efforts in the 1970's to establish Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. Following the United States bicentennial in 1976, Jew realized that Asian Pacific Americans were ". . .were excluded from those stories during celebrations of the country's bicentennial. We were literally ignored even though we were part of building this country." A year later, Jew enlisted the support of Rep. Frank Horton (R-NY) who, along with Rep. Norman Mineta, (D-CA), introduced House Resolution 540. This resolution proclaimed the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced similar legislation into the Senate. May was selected for the recognition because two significant events in history took place in that month: Japanese immigrants first arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad was completed on May 10, 1869 (Golden Spike Day). Furthermore, since school is still in session during May, educators could capitalize on the opportunity to include Asian Pacific American history into the curriculum.

ASIAN AMERICANS History In 1970, there were 1.5 million Asian Americans in the United States; in 1980, 3.7 million; and 1990, 7.2 million, representing almost a 100 percent increase in the last decade. Demographers predict that this growth will continue through the 1990s and into the 21st century because of above average birth rates and accelerating immigration (both legal and illegal). By 2080, Asian Americans will constitute 12 percent of the population. Myth versus Reality

Diabetes in Asian and Pacific Islander Americans
On this page: Diabetes mellitus poses a rapidly growing health challenge to Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in the United States. In 1997, the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) population was estimated to be about 10 million, almost a 50 percent increase since the 1990 Census and representing about 3.8 percent of the total U.S. population. This group includes people whose origins are in the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Pacific Islands. Results of the 1990 census showed that the APIA population had the greatest increase of any major ethnic group, doubling in size since the 1980 census. The Immigration Act of 1965 and the arrival of many Southeast Asian refugees under the Refugee Resettlement Program after 1975 contributed to the increase in population observed in the past two decades.

Sound-alike matching According to the 2000 U.S. census, Asian Americans make up 4.3% of the total U.S. population that’s about 12 million people who identify themselves as at least part Asian. However, this number represents an increase of 63% from the 1990 census, making Asian Americans the fastest growing of all the major racial/ethnic groups in the U.S., in terms of percentage growth. But in so many ways, the presence of Asian Americans is much more prominent than even these numbers suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions From the newsgroup soc.culture.asian.american What's an Asian American?
An American of Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry (Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Pakistani, etc.).
Immigrants are "first-generation" ; their children are "second-generation"; their grandchildren are "third-generation"; etc. The different Asian communities often adapt and add to this terminology to better describe themselves to each other and sometimes those terms are picked up and used by Asian America.
For example: issei, nissei and sansei : 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation people (from the Japanese American community) 1.5 generation : someone who immigrated when they were a teenager (Korean American).
Some people count 1st generation as the first generation being born in the USA, however, this is not the standard usage of the terms. To avoid confusion, please use the generally accepted definition, given above.
There is often a big cultural gap between the first generation (who grew up overseas) and later generations (who grew up here) and is the topic of tons of Asian American literature. Often, language is lost somewhere between the first and third generation - making it hard for the different generations to communicate with each other. This further excaborates the gap.
What's the difference between Asian Americans and other Americans?

The Emergence of an American People

By Helen Zia Published by FSG; 0-374-14774-4; $26.00US/$41.00CAN; March 00; This groundbreaking book is about the transformation of Asian Americans from a few small, disconnected, and largely invisible ethnic groups into a self-identified racial group that is influencing every aspect of American society. It explores the junctures that shocked Asian Americans into motion and shaped a new consciousness, including the murder of Vincent Chin, a Chinese American, by two white autoworkers who believed he was Japanese; the apartheid-like working conditions of Filipinos in the Alaska salmon canneries; the boycott of Korean American greengrocers in Brooklyn; the L.A. riots; and the casting of non-Asians in the Broadway musical Miss Saigon . The book also examines the rampant stereotyping of Asian Americans, which has an impact on key issues concerning all Americans, from affirmative action and campaign finance to popular culture and national security.

At the center of the room, a slender middle-aged woman chants softly. She's surrounded by two dozen young performers playing beggars and peddlers who rise from slumber in the intricate ballet of an urban morning scene. Their dance moves become ever more energetic as the pianist in the corner pounds harder on the keys. The woman is Madhur Jaffrey, the actress and cookbook author who has made a career of introducing the tastes of her native India to the West. Asian American
An Asian American is a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late 1960s, used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. This term has largely replaced the now-deprecated term "oriental", which was popularly used before the 1990s to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Although immigrants from the " Middle East " (Western and Central Asia) are geographically Asian, they have generally neither been sufficiently visibly distinct as a group in America nor have they historically arrived in such large numbers to warrant attention as a major American racial or ethnic group until very recently (see ). As a result, they are not considered by most Americans to be typical Asians or Asian Americans, but identified by other means, such as " Arab Americans ". For these same reasons, northern Asians such as Siberians and peoples from former
