geography of pakistan It is necessary here to look at pakistan s geography, which so clearly affected the movements of history across its face.
    http://www.geocities.com/yosemite/4580/frames/about_pakistan.html
Pakistan The country of Pakistan, formally created on August 14, 1947, is in fact a region with an astonishingly rich history of 4,000 years. The name Pakistan means 'The Land of Pure People". Stretching from the Arabian Sea in the south to mighty convergence of lofty peaks in the north, Pakistan stands at one at one of the world's most important cultural crossroads. Ruins, forts, palaces and monuments of its great civilization abound. But the land today, with about 140 million people, is living, vibrant, colorful place - complex, rich in variety and immensely rewarding to the visitors. Geography of Pakistan It is necessary here to look at Pakistan's geography, which so clearly affected the movements of history across its face. Pakistan is 2,415 Km. long from north to south, stretching across the northwestern edge of Indo-Pak subcontinent. Its axis is the great Indus River, the traditional source of life for its people. The Indus and its tributaries drain the entire country, except for the western desert region of Baluchistan, and its waters create the largest irrigation system in the world. To the west of Indus lies the huge, desert plateau of the province Baluchistan, covering 44% of the country's surface area.

    Pakistan Tours Overview
No matter which direction you turn in Pakistan, there's potential for trouble. On one side is Afghanistan, a country still in upheaval following anti-Taliban military operations. On the other is India, Pakistan's bitter rival. The two countries have been engaged in an on-again, off-again battle over the region of Kashmir for decades. Today, the situation is more tense than ever, with both sides brandishing nuclear weapons. For travelers, this is not the time to go to Pakistan. Even in less turbulent times, much of Pakistan had a rough, frontier feel to it. The northern reaches have always been a trekker's paradise, with five of the world's 14 highest peaks (including the forbidding K2), several of the world's largest glaciers and a number of raging rivers. The remote valley of Hunza, with its rarefied atmosphere and long-lived people, has been compared to the mythical Shangri-La. Those who have visited Pakistan praise the spirit and culture of its people, its inspiring vistas and the sense of history the country imparts.

    INDEPTH: INDIA AND PAKISTAN
    Border on the brink
Kashmir has been called the world’s most dangerous border and the likeliest place for a nuclear war to erupt. It is the state bordering India and Pakistan, two countries that not only share a past but also a long-standing hatred for each other.
Fighting in Kashmir has been going on for years, but resolving the dispute or at least ensuring it doesn’t get any worse has taken on added importance.
Both countries successfully tested nuclear weapons within weeks of each other in May 1998, significantly raising the stakes in the long-simmering feud over Kashmir for the entire region.
In addition, Pakistan sits next door to Afghanistan, one of the main theatres in the U.S.-led war on terrorism. American forces say Taliban fighters are using Pakistan as a base for launching attacks on southern and southeastern Afghanistan.
