(Last week of February)
At Jacobabad (Sindh). Similar activities as in Sibi Festival.
Jashan-e-Larkana:
(Last week of February) At Larkana (Sindh). Traditional sports, exhibition of handicrafts, folk music and dances.
Bassant
With the advent of spring Basant Festival is celebrated with pomp and show in mid February every year in Lahore. In other words this is the spring festival. Alleging that kite flying is a Hindu event is also sheer ignorance. The sport originated in China about 5000 years ago, when Hinduism was in non existent. Why single out kite-flying then, especially when it is a source of joy for the old and the young men and women? The simple reason is that Hindu at Basant Festival fly kites for enjoying Basant. With times Muslims who were living together with Hindus in the sub-continent also join them in kite-flying. Since then Muslims are taking participation in just kite-flying at the time of Basant connotating it as Pala Urant. Now a days people of Lahore enjoy it by kite flying competition and by visiting the shrine of saint Madho Lal Hussein, where they assemble to pay their benediction.

Pathan Poetry of Afghanistan and Pakistan
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 1,511 Words Author : Jane Schreibman
Jane Schreibman is a freelance photojournalist based in New York.
The Pathans live in what is now northwest Pakistan and southeast Afghanistan. This part of central Asia is surrounded by huge mountain ranges, the Himalayas, the Pamirs, and the Hindu Kush in the north and the Sulaiman ranges running north to south along the Pathan territory. These mountain ranges had to be crossed by conquerors such as Darius, Alexander the Great, and the Mongol hordes as they pursued their expansion eastward. And the Pathan territory contained one of the choicest mountain passes, the Khyber Pass.
Although many conquering dynasties passed through the land of the Pathans, none was ever able to subjugate them, nor did the Pathans ever pay tribute to anyone. They are known throughout the world and pride themselves as being great warriors, not answering to anyone's laws but their own. Even today, along the roads of the northwest frontier in Pakistan there are signs put up by the government warning people not be venture off the road after dark.

Pakistan's 'culture of Jihad'
06 August 2002 Pakistan's 'culture of Jihad' " One young man told me: "Holy war or jihad is done when you are being murdered, you are being killed... your innocent brothers and your sisters are being killed. Then you go into the field of battle and war against the enemy. "This is jihad, and nothing more. This is not terrorism. This is to stop terrorism," he said. Such young men admire the Taleban, and they are angry at its defeat at the hands of America.

Country Information
Please Support Pakistan has borders with Afghanistan, India, Iran and the Arabian Sea. The terrain varies from rugged and mountainous to flat, alluvial plains. Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, is situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea near the mouth of the Indus. The streets are lively with hundreds of street restaurants, teahouses, samosa and juice stalls. Boats can be hired to sail out of the harbour. Lahore, in the Punjab, is a historic, bustling city with buildings of pink and white marble. There is plenty to see: bazaars, the Badshahi Mosque ?€“ one of the largest mosques in the whole world and an example of Moghul architecture rivalled only by the Taj Mahal. Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan since 1963, and Rawalpindi, are both located on the Pothowar Plain. The old part of the town boasts fine examples of local architecture and the narrow streets are crammed with bazaars where craftsmen are still using traditional methods. The Kashmir province has some of the highest mountains in the world including the famous Nanga Parbat and second highest mountain in the world, K2.

Jessica Stern

From Foreign Affairs November/December 2000
Article preview: first 500 of 3,861 words total.
Summary: Pakistani militant groups are killing civilians and engaging in terrorism in Indian-held Kashmir under the guise of holy war. The government in Islamabad supports these militants and their religious schools as cheap ways to fight India and educate Pakistan's youth. But this policy is creating a culture of violence that exacerbates internal sectarianism and destabilizes the region. Without change, this monster threatens to devour Pakistani society.
