There are many ways to incorporate service-learning into your existing curriculum. Here is a list of abstracts of a number of actual project completed by pre-service and student teachers during the past few years: Kindergarten - Students developed booklets containing activities they had done in their first year of school and felt that preschool children would like to hear about. The kindergarten children read the booklets that they had produced to preschool children so that the preschool children could better understand what kindergarten was really like. 1st grade - As part of a social studies unit first grade students prepared a Thanksgiving feast, decorated tables and invited needy people from the community to participate. This feast was compared to the first Thanksgiving feast. 1st grade - 85 first grade students designed and made placemats with a Christmas theme. These mats were laminated and presented to the local "Food and Friends" program to be given to the shut-ins with their holiday meal. 2nd grade - Math students studying symmetry designed valentines and presented the valentines to a local adult foster care home.

    http://www.gsd.k12.ms.us/wallslyt.html
The Grenada Middle School has deveoped an innovative new teaching strategy using the arts-an idea to use the walls of a building facility to teach the student. As a result of this concept, a partnership between business, artists, school district parent groups, and the Mississippi Arts Commission has created the "Walls That Teach" learning environment . "Walls that Teach" has produced a teaching work of art that describes world events and takes the students on a journey combining art, technology, and history.
The project communicates the idea that the school is a "time machine" equipped with a graphic time line, swirling graphics, and a number countdown inlaid in the floor tiles. This project serves as an interactive teaching tool that has been the basis of county-wide teacher inservice and a motivation technique for student creative writing activities, historical studies, and research.
After traveling past the timeline that extends form 6,000 B.C. to the present, the "time machine" takes the students to the first stop-the fifties! Students are surrounded with a mural, painted by artist Ginger Wolfe, depicting a myriad of famous personalities from this era, all of them portrayed in the environment of the local Grenada Lake.
The next hallway, Egypt, features a nine-foot sculptural sarcophagus, map, and murals depicting life in Egypt. The artist, Robin Whitfield, stated, "The Egyptian section contains design elements, hieroglyphics, and murals depicting the major styles of Egyptian art. The walls of the halls will be used, as well as the floor tiles, to provide a total learning environment for the middle school students."

Detailed Description Module #3 Using Mathematica in the Mathematics Classroom The purpose of this module is to familiarize you with the basics of Mathematica programming and its use for generating technology-based classroom materials and demonstrations as well as student tutorials and laboratories. Mathematica is a very powerful software package that allows you to do complicated numerical calculations, produce and animate beautiful and precise graphical displays, perform messy algebraic and analytic manipulations as well as to do technical word processing. Moreover, all of these capabilities can be used in a single environment called a Mathematica notebook that can be used interactively as an electronic student tutorial, a classroom computer demonstration, or that can be printed as overhead transparency masters or text supplements for special classroom units. As such, it has the power to change the way you teach and the way your students learn mathematics. To be able to use Mathematica effectively for the above purposes, you need not be an expert

    Background
For this project, I am focusing on an English 52 class that I teach in a learning community with a counseling class, Career Guidance 200. The combined class stresses the growth of student self-awareness within the context of family and community. It moves through an exploration of personal goals and objectives; the class culminates in the development of a clear educational/career plan that reflects the individual’s strengths and interests. As we reviewed resource materials at the New Media Classroom web site, I was drawn to the links relating to murals in Los Angeles. These rich and gorgeous materials, redolent of familial and cultural sights, sounds, and feelings, offered a stunning store of resources to pursue. I began spinning off an exciting sequence of ideas, all in some way rotating around two questions:

    METHOD:
  • Bulletin Board Ideas: " Grade Was A Picnic!" Have students write their favorite activity or event that occurred throughout the school year onto a small paper plate. Display on bulletin board. Take pictures of your students. Fasten onto small paper plates and display. High Fives For Summer! - Have the students trace their hand onto a piece of construction paper (their choice of color). Then, have them cut out their hands. Give each student a white piece of lined paper and direct them to glue part of the piece onto the palm of the hand they just cut. Now the students can write their summer plans on their palm. Add a plain colored background, a border of your choice, and the title; "High Fives For Summer." Other End of the Year Goodies Make Bubbles and Blow them with your class! To make, mix 1 cup of liquid detergent, 2 cups of warm water, 4 tablespoons glycerine, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Blow away!

    Dianne Idea #3

We are fortunate in our district to have our computers linked to a TV which is mounted on a wall. It makes it easier to incorporate various software and the internet into daily lessons (I teach Reading/Language Arts). I also have two additional computers (one is a castoff from home) which the kids use in their free time as they finish their work. To enable some of my slower students to get some computer time, I occasionally use a roster with the kids' names to decide who will have computer time that day. Sometimes I'll start at the beginning, middle or end of the roster to allow everyone an equal chance of using the computer. Good luck! Using the computer effectively in the classroom can be a tricky business! Karen Idea #4

At the end, we even have a couple of web projects for K-4 As students become more advanced at web use, they can begin to create their own pages. Any of the following ideas can be developed for advanced students by having them work in teams to create a Web Virtual Collection or Exhibition on the topic to share with others. Reminder: One of the most important things you can do for your students is help them learn to evaluate information! Have them ask: Who provided this information? What are his or her qualifications? Is this information consistent with what experts say? Does this information reflect a particular viewpoint? What are the other viewpoints? What can I learn from this web page?
