Ozone and Your Environment
Learn the terminology and skills used by today's scientists while focusing on one of Earth's most pressing environmental problems-Ozone in our environment. Recently, ozone, a simple molecule made from three oxygen atoms, has been discussed with great concern in headline stories such as, "Rising Ozone Levels in LA Cause Smog Alert," and "Depletion in Ozone Layer May Lead to Cancer!" Whether it is too much or too little, the effect of human activities on the level of ozone in our environment is under close scrutiny by environmentalists, politicians, and lawmakers. The lessons in this unit well help you discover why. Ozone can be found in two very different layers of our atmosphere, the troposphere and the stratosphere. The environmental problems related to the levels of ozone in these two atmospheric layers are very different. In the troposphere, the level of the atmosphere that we live in, ozone is a component of the air pollution commonly referred to as "smog." The amount of ozone in our troposphere is increasing because of chemicals emitted wherever natural gas, gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and oil are combusted. Nearly 90% of our Earth's ozone is found in the atmospheric layer above ours called the stratosphere. This layer extends from about 14.5 kilometers to 50 kilometers (9-31 miles) in altitude and is where airplanes fly. The ozone layer is within the stratosphere, approximately 15-40 kilometers (10-25 miles) above the Earth's surface. This ozone is important for blocking the Earth from the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays by absorbing the UV energy and keeping the rays from penetrating to the Earth.

WHAT IS OZONE?
  • Ozone is "active oxygen," nature's special element. (Each Ozone molecule consists of three oxygen atoms.) Ozone is a natural purifier. Ozone is created in nature by the combination of oxygen in air and the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Ozone has a clean. fresh scent noticed after a rainstorm. Ozone is the most powerful oxidizer safely used. Ozone is the alternative water purifier to traditional chemicals such as chlorine and bromine.
OZONE IS CONVENIENT IN
POOLS AND SPAS
  • Ozone does not have to be purchased or stored. Ozone is generated "on site" and is introduced into the water or air automatically. Ozone does not affect the pH balance of water, thus minimizing pH adjustments. Ozone helps reduce total dissolved solids in water so that the water does not have to be changed as often. Ozone eliminates much of the routine maintenance because it does such an effective job keeping the water or air clean.

It may ultimately be responsible for many millions of cases of skin cancer worldwide and may significantly affect agricultural production. Nevertheless, it is also an issue on which we may take heart, because it has brought the international community closer together in the search for practical solutions to a common threat. The thrust areas of Ozone Cell Directorate are as follows:
  • International negotiations relating to policy decision by the conference of parties and those relating to implementation by the Executive Committee.
  • Policy initiatives by the Govt. to encourage ODS phase out.
  • Preparation and implementation ODS phase out projects by individual enterprises. In order to achieve the target on the above thrust areas Ozone Cell Directorate is organizing the activities as given below.

Manage alerts What is this? NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) Illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances (ODS) is rising as the deadline for zero production and consumption of such chemicals draws closer, a London-based lobby group said on Monday. The Environment Investigation Agency (EIA) released a report at the United Nations Environmental Programme headquarters in Nairobi showing trends in global chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) smuggling and the need for faster phase out under the Montreal Protocol. The protocol requires signatory states to phase out the use of some 95 chemicals blamed for damaging the ozone layer, a stratum of the atmosphere that protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation, which can cause skin cancer. But some countries, especially developing nations, have not yet complied with the protocol, which commits them to phasing out CFCs often used in refrigerators and other chemicals by certain dates.

Md. Dept. of Environment Advises on Coming Ozone Alerts
Research has shown that pollution blown into Maryland from other states is a significant factor in the quality of the state's air. Without more stringent regional controls, it will be very difficult for Maryland to achieve the national ozone standard. April 26, 2004Maryland's Department of the Environment (MDE) reminds residents of the Baltimore-Washington area that they have easy access to air quality forecasts and tips to help them breathe easier during the upcoming ozone season. May 1 marks the beginning of the ground level ozone season for this area; the season ends Sept. 30. This ground level ozone can be harmful to all, especially children, people with respiratory disease such as asthma, and those who work or exercise outdoors. Even at moderate levels, ozone may cause coughing, nose and throat irritation and chest pains. It can make lungs function less efficiently and it can make people more susceptible to respiratory illnesses. AirWatch, a "real time" air quality data notification system, can be visited at

Ground-Level Ozone What Is Ground-Level Ozone? Ozone is a colorless gas that is a variety of oxygen. Oxygen consists of two oxygen atoms; while ozone consists of three. Ground-level ozone is one of the main components of smog, which is formed by the interaction of hydrocarbons (unburned or evaporated gasoline) and nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight. Where Is It Found? Stratospheric ozone (in the upper atmosphere) is known as the ozone layer and protects our health by shielding us from the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. However, ground-level, ozone (tropospheric ozone) is a pollutant with highly toxic effects. It is a health hazard causing damage to human health, the environment, crops, and a wide range of natural and artificial materials. What Are the Health Effects of Ground-Level Ozone? Ozone that is close to the ground can cause eye irritation; headaches; coughing; impaired lung function; and eye, nose, and throat irritation. Asthmatics and children are most at risk. The chance of experiencing adverse health effects from elevated ozone levels increases during heavy exercise or outdoor activity. Ground-level ozone can also damage trees, plants, and reduce visibility. What Causes Ground-Level Ozone?

Methyl bromide, a fumigant that kills soil and food pests, is due to be phased out by developed nations by January 1, 2005, under the 1987 Montreal Protocol to protect the atmosphere. The George W. Bush administration last year attempted to exempt farmers from the 2005 ban. Negotiations on how much should be exempted for critical uses deadlocked last November at a U.N.-sponsored negotiating conference in Nairobi. Delegates hope to reach an agreement on the figure at a Montreal meeting this week. The United States, the European Union and Japan have cut the use of methyl bromide to 30 percent of 1991 levels, but now the United States wants to increase its use of the chemical to 37 percent over previous levels over the next two years and by an unspecified level in the year after that.
