All owls have specially designed eyes, ears, and wings to enable them to capture their prey. Their eyes are large and on the front of their faces, giving them binocular vision and fine depth perception. They have a large concentration of rods on their retinas, but they see little color. Their eyes are ten times as light-sensitive as human eyes, but they are short-sighted so they hunt near the ground. Their eyes are so large that there is little room in their skulls for eye muscles. Thus an owl turns its head, sometimes as much as 270 degrees, rather than its eyes, to follow a moving object. Owl ears are located on the sides of the "facial disks," those round feather arrangements, and give owls the most highly developed sense of hearing of all birds. The facial feathers help to amplify and channel sounds to their ears. Generally one ear is larger than the other and slightly above or below, so the owl can pinpoint the location of a sound. It can hear a mouse or a cricket in the grass below!

The barn owl is often seen ghost-like in the dusk, or caught in the lights of a car, where it appears all-white. Like all owls, its feather tips are split to break the wind flow at the trailing edge of the wings, eliminating even the soft sound of flowing air to produce absolute silent flying.

Bubo bubo 65-70 cm Photos: A large view of this photo (15 k) This is a big bird, the largest owl in Europe. Its bright orange eyes and large "horns", along with its 150 cm wing span, give it a fierce appearance indeed. In June of 1995, a 21-year-old shepherd in Montauroux discovered an exhausted eagle owl in a field with her goats. The bird was not injured, but sick and unable to fly. The young woman looked after the owl and then transported it to a local vet. It was later taken to Menton where it will be cared for by experts before being released back at Montauroux.

Common Barn-Owl
Tito Alba
Geology Animals Plants People
Range All four of the Southwestern deserts. The barn owl occurs in great numbers in Southern California.
Habitat
Hunts in areas rich in rodents, along desert washes and canyons, where trees for perching are available.
Description
The barn owl can readily be distinguished from other owls by its unique shape, color and voice. This distinctive, medium-sized owl grows 15 to 20 inches in height. It has long, feathered legs and makes a loud, rasping hiss, rather than the hoot associated with other owls. The Barn Owl is primarily white with buff, yellow and tawny shadings. It is delicately freckled with dark specks and the blending of colors in day-light has led some to call it, the "golden owl." Other common names are for it are the "White Owl" and "Monkey-faced Owl." The barn owl's face is arresting. There are no ear tufts. The eyes and beak are completely encircled by a heart-shaped facial ruff of white, rimmed with tan while slightly curved feathers radiate out from the small, dark eyes. The eyes of owls look forward in a fixed position and cannot move to the side, as the human eye can. Therefore, to see to the side or back, the owl must turn its whole head. They see extremely well at night. Their hearing must be extremely acute also, for it is known that a barn owl can strike a mouse in the dark.

Great Horned Owl
OWLS!
Owls are seldom seen, but can be heard at night. These magnificent birds are wonderful to have around, and once in awhile you can catch a glimpse of them as they sail silently through the night sky. Owls are important to our gardens because they are great scavengers of mice and rats. Their hearing is so acute that they can detect the location and direction of a mouse under leaves and in total darkness. Their fluffy plumage makes their flight nearly soundless. Their large eyes and solemn look gives rise to the belief that they symbolize wisdom. Look into their large eyes and you can see where the term "wise old owl" comes from. Because owls can see in the dark, they were once believed to possess supernatural powers. That's why its a common Halloween icon! The three owls featured below are the most common year round inhabitants in North America. THE GREAT HORNED OWL The Great Horned Owl is the largest and best known owl in North America. The great horned owl can be identified as 18-25 inches long, with widely spaced ear tufts, yellow eyes, white throat and finely barred underparts. The male and female look alike except the female will be larger. You will usually hear the great horned owl before you see it. The call is a distinct, deeply resonant 4-6 hoots: hoo, hoo-hoo-hoo, hoo.

What are burrowing owls?
If you drive along rural roads on a spring or summer day in the Tri-City area, you may be lucky enough to see a burrowing owl perched atop a fencepost or sitting on a dirt mound near the entrance to its nest. As the bird's name suggests, this small, round-headed owl with long legs and yellow eyes lives in a hole in the ground made by badgers and other burrowing animals. Badger Canyon is one place you might spot this migratory resident of the Columbia Basin. Look for a buffy white and brown bird, 8 to 10 inches tall, that is active both during the day and at night. Listen for its call, a cooing similar to that of a mourning dove.
How do burrowing owls live? In eastern Washington, burrowing owls choose burrows in sagebrush stands, open fields, near golf courses, and along road cut banksareas surrounded by bare ground or short grass where other burrows are located. The burrow's nest cavity is located at the end of a 5- to 10-foot tunnel that usually has at least one turn. The owls line the tunnel with cow or horse dung. The female owl lays seven to nine white eggs in the nest cavity. The eggs hatch in about 28 days. Two to four weeks after hatching you may see the little owlets sitting near the burrow entrance. When frightened, the owlets hop back into their hole. When disturbed in the burrow, the young owls make a rasping noise similar to that of a rattlesnake's rattle.
