Joan of Arc The Story So Far:
Owls are four Midwesterners who have rediscovered the home offered by each other.
After forming the cultishly-popular and youthful Cap'n Jazz (who posthumously released the majority of its recordings on Jade Tree in 1998), Tim Kinsella, Mike Kinsella, Victor Villareal and Sam Zurich centrifugally parted ways in 1994, each treading forth to sonically venture further. Some Owls investigated all things french situationalist, sparse and electric ( Joan of Arc ); some poked and prodded at what was grounded and intricately moving (American Football, Ghosts and Vodka). Tim Kinsella, Mike Kinsella, Victor Villareal and Sam Zurich have now re-found the chemistry that bound them together in the first place, and solidify that chemistry with the experience of each member's exploratory development.
Owls uses tools they've accumulated to build instead of extract from The Rock, naturally. Through simplying and starting over, the group rediscovered and reassessed their chemistry, writing their debut self-titled album (recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago) via ceaseless practices without a single computer, which was a completely unfamiliar practice for some involved. Steve Albini, hired for his inobtrusive and impeccable engineering skills, scratched his head at the results of the four's use of solely traditional rock instruments.
Without any expectations or directions in mind but the songs themselves and a dedication to sincerity and expression, Owls have found that they have a solidified grip on each now-grown member's individual connection to method, producing a hybrid. But unlike the "contrived or self-conscious cut and paste genre juxtaposing" of thrash-rap or classical cheese-glam, the elements of Owls have, in Kinsellas' words, "been baking quietly for years and, now fully digested, seem natural and inevitable - no longer at odds".

The Burrowing Owl is currently on British Columbia's Red list CDC COSEWIC has assigned Endangered status in 1995.
Image Credits: top photos by D. Low, sketch in "Birds of British Columbia", Campbell et al. bottom photo taken by Dick Cannings, Royal British Columbia Museum, Historical facts Historically, Burrowing Owls in British Columbia bred mainly in the Okanagan-Similkameen and south Thompson basins: Osoyoos, Oliver, Penticton, White Lake, Coldstream, Okanagan Landing, Knutsford, Savona, Kamloops, Douglas Lake and Lulu Island in the Fraser Delta; with occasional records over a slightly wider area in southern British Columbia - east to the Kootenay River valley, north to Horsefly in the interior and north to Comox on the coast. Last breeding record in 1970. Designated threatened in 1979 and reconfirmed as threatened in 1991; re-examined in 1995 and uplisted to endangered. Except for some recent nests derived from introductions, its true breeding status is not clear but there may still be a few isolated nesting pairs in the Okanagan Valley each year. The reintroduction of Burrowing Owls has not been successful in establishing a stable population. Distinguishing features Within the owl family, Burrowing Owls; being a grassland rather than a forest species, are unusual in many respects: they live in underground burrows, are often active in broad daylight, and eat insects as well as rodents. Ranked second to the Barn Owl as the most economically beneficial owl in North America because it eats so many insects and rodents near agricultural areas.

Welcome to the Fly High World of Falconry Whether it is marvelling at a falcon swooping from high upon its prey or wondering how an owl manages to turn its head so far around, birds of prey have long been a source of mystery and wonder for all ages. Savage beak and claw combine with feather and down to create a wild beauty which recalls images of knights and kings, of Arab princes and of an age when man and bird worked in harmony for business and pleasure. When a falconer flies a bird he has trained and grown with, the bird and he are partners and when his bird leaves his glove he soars with it above the clouds, relishing the freedom of the wind beneath his wings. They've got movie-star charisma, with power (and talons) to match. But to raise chicks, snowy owls rely on the boom-or-bust market of their favorite prey: the humble lemming.
Get a taste of what awaits you in print from this compelling excerpt.
Nyctea scandiaca in significant numbers, Holt says, "You have to come to Barrow." Most owl species depend on camouflage and stealth to survive, but "snowy owls seem to defy all the conventional owl wisdom," says researcher Mat Seidensticker. "They don't hide. During the breeding season they're flashing white beacons" against the treeless greens and browns of the tundra, hunting in Arctic summer's 24-hour daylight. Adult females weigh as much as five pounds and hurtle through the air on wings more than five feet across. Males are smaller and sleeker, with a top weight of about four pounds, but they're equally powerful fliers. Lemmings aren't their only prey: Snowy owls kill weasels and foxes, and even feed on other birds, including jaegers, eiders, and gulls. Diving out of the sky with long legs and talons outstretched, a snowy owl can drive away humans, dogs, even caribou that wander too close to its young.

Barred Owl ( Strix varia
To hear the Barred Owl, click here. DESCRIPTION, SENSES
Barred owls are often out at night, dawn or dusk, but can be seen during the day. NESTING AND RAISING BABIES: OWLS AND PEOPLE : Barred owls live all over the eastern U.S., and are very common in Florida. Their calls sound like "who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?" Since barred owls like to live near water, they may get tangled in fishing line someone has left behind. Sometimes they are hit by cars while looking for prey near a road. NEVER try to touch or get close to an owl. They are predators with strong talons and will hurt you if you get too close. It is against the law to have an owl as a pet or to have owl feathers without a permit from the government. It’s better to watch and learn and enjoy the owl free.
