Falconry traces its origins back several thousand years and has been the passion of some of the most influential people in history. Aristocratic and romantic, this ancient sport has retained its mystique right up to the present day and few images are as powerful as a trained hawk sitting sharp eyed on a gloved fist. To watch a falconer's hawk in action can be thrilling, but to get out into the countryside and fly such a bird yourself is an experience without equal; the feel of the hawk riding your hand and the excitement as it launches into flight makes for a spellbinding encounter. At Castle Falconry we are confident of being able to make your first taste of falconry unforgettable. Leading the team is internationally acclaimed falconer and dog trainer Andy Hughes who has personally trained over 70 various birds of prey during the last 28 years, including Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Owls. Under his guidance you are guaranteed to get the very most of your outing. Groups are kept small and this ensures plenty of involvement, at the same time promoting a friendly, informal atmosphere. A period of instruction will help you feel comfortable around hawks and teach you some basic handling skills. Then it's off into the surrounding countryside to put theory into practice.

    Status
The Alberta Wildlife Act lists the burrowing owl as a threatened animal. Both the birds and their nests are fully protected. The world distribution of burrowing owls includes the prairie regions of western Canada, the United States, Central America, and South America. Small populations are also found in Florida and the Caribbean islands. Once numerous, the species generally has declined throughout all areas. For example, burrowing owls are now absent from large parts of western North America. Historically, Canada had good breeding populations of burrowing owls throughout the dry, short-grass prairie habitat of the four western provinces. Nests occurred in the Okanagan area of British Columbia and in an area outlined by Calgary, Wetaskiwin, and Wainwright in Alberta; Prince Alberta and Yorkton in Saskatchewan; and Winnipeg in Manitoba. Since the 1930s, there has been a steady decrease both in the number of birds and their geographic range in the prairie provinces. They disappeared completely from British Columbia. In the late 1970s there were approximately 2100 breeding pairs left in Canada. Rough estimates suggested there might have been 1300 breeding pairs in Saskatchewan, 720 in Alberta, and 100 in Manitoba. By 1987 the population estimates decreased to 400 in Saskatchewan, 700 in Alberta and 35 in Manitoba. The 1987 Alberta population estimate was based on an extensive survey. (It is likely that the population was underestimated in 1977.) British Columbia has now established a few pairs to re-introduce burrowing owls in the Okanagan as part of a management program.

The OWLs that are included have resources, including links or handouts that provide information about grammatical structures, writing strategies, and reference materials. Besides links to on-line dictionaries, information about writing modes, sample essays or letters, most of the resources provided by these eight OWLs center on grammar. Grammatical categories include articles ("the," "a," "an," and other determiners), verbs, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, nouns (especially plural forms), possessives, pronouns, punctuation rules, sentence combining guides, and spelling guides. The amounts of information and level of difficulty vary for each OWL. Abstract
Hypertextual writing resources, on the Web and elsewhere, are forcing or is that "allowing"? students, teachers and administrators to re-think and re-evaluate the ways we help students learn to write. Perhaps no resource available has had more of an effect over the last year than the sudden plethora of Online Writing Labs (OWLs) available. But, "OWL" means different things to different audiences, and as a means of providing a multi-layered, multi-perspectival view of what some of those meanings are, Kairos enlisted the aid of five academics with varying degrees of vested interest in OWLs, to review, comment and inform. Owls are easily recognized; most everyone in the world knows about owls. They are considered creatures of mystery or doom or good luck, depending on where you are. They are wonderful birds to discover during the day, like this huge Great Gray Owl (left) in Yosemite Nat'l Park. But they are primarily nocturnal birds, hunting in the dark by using exceptional hearing and eyes that gather light much better than our own. This Buffy Fish-Owl (below right) was hunting over the tennis courts at the Danum research station in lowland Borneo, where I caught it in a flash. Since owls are night birds, they are difficult to see although their characteristic songs and calls can often be easily heard. I enjoy owls (and there is nothing so pleasant as going to sleep on a camping trips to a chorus of owls), but admit to not being much of an "owler." I tend to enjoy a drink after the sun sets, and there are other things to do indoors at night Stalking outside in the cold and dark for elusive critters, aiming a flashlight at where one thinks they are and rarely being correct, is not my idea of great fun, but there are field ornithologists who are exceptional at owling (Ben King comes to mind; his judicial use of tape and his insight into where an owl is likely to be sitting in extraordinary). Others are good at imitations and whistles and can "call in" the owls on their own, but I'm not one of them. Perhaps this explains why my percentage of the world's owls seen is much lower than most other families. I much prefer my owls in day roosts, like this
